Amazon Kindle Oasis (2019) | Ultimate eReader?

  • Unboxing and review of Amazon's 3rd-generation Kindle Oasis eReader, fresh for 2019, complete with new display temperature controls. All of the best features from the Oasis 2 are back in action, including the waterproof design, auto brightness and LTE support. But is this updated Kindle worth the £229 UK asking price?
While this is undoubtedly my favourite eReader of 2019, the third-gen Oasis is rather steep as far as cost goes. After all, the latest Paperwhite is a hundred quid less and yet still delivers a waterproof finish, sharp backlit screen and all of those great Kindle features, including the lending library support and a massive selection of ebooks via the online store.
That said, this all new Oasis does serve up a bigger, more customisable display as well as brilliant battery life. And you have full Audible support as usual, so you can enjoy audiobooks by connecting to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones.
Full Kindle Oasis 3 review coming soon, and check out my coverage of the Kobo Forma, Paperwhite and other brilliant eReaders here on Tech Spurt.

Last year I bought Kindle Oasis 2 Gen. I love it, especially the size: 7 inches. However, after using it for about 9 months, I noticed that the light is "bleeding" through the metal frame on the left side. In order words, I can see light coming through the frame. That means that if there is a tiny space between the screen and the frame, the water will also get there if the device is in water.
Besides that, I love the product.

It's been great for the most part but running sluggish or freezing which clears up after rebooting but I've rebooted it more in the last 6 months than I had in the last several years so I've been thinking about upgrading to something like this Oasis. The three features of warmer light, buttons to advance pages and ergonomics are the things I'm most excited about so to me (Someone who reads 100+ titles a year and often well into the wee hours of the night) they're worth the extra money.

I have a rooted 2011 Kindle 4 Non-Touch with disabled ads - it was cheap, is thinner, has 2 page turn buttons on both sides, and very light. I don't need a touch screen when i'm only turning pages, backlight would be nice, but then the charge will be dead sooner. New gen has a little bit sharper contrast, but all and all i don't see a reason to buy a new one. Also the price on this oasis is crazy high for no reason - 2.5 times higher than standard 10th gen with 6" screen.

Amílcar Cabrera I don’t the E-Ink displays are very suitable for pdf. The way the display works makes it perfect for replicating the look of ink-on-paper, but for other media, the display would likely be too slow outside of the occasional illustration from a graphic novel or something. A Kindle Fire or other normal tablet would likely be much better for PDFs. If you’re talking PDFs that are just normal text books, you could probably covert the PDF to a format compatible with e-readers and as long as it’s primarily text it should still work fine.

Yes. My 'problem' was if I held it left handed to give my right hand a rest, would the page-change buttons be the 'wrong' way up. Nope, you can turn it round and the functionality is exactly the same. Brilliant.
The only downside for me, is the audiobook feature does NOT have a timer. On all my devices, the Audible apps have a timer built in, whereas this (expensive) flagship model which boasts audiobook functionality, doesn't.
Come on Amazon, this is an excellent piece of kit, but for that price, I need a cherry on the top (the timer!!).
