Rare Earth was the first big-name rock concert I ever went to, in 1973, when I was in 10th grade. I saw them at a coliseum and the opening act was Parliment-Funkadelic - talk about a great first concert! Pete had an amazing voice - and to think he was drumming his heart out while holding these powerful notes. And their harmonies were just wonderful! Sadly, today, they've almost been forgotten.

I have NOT forgotten Rare Earth. Radio stations may not play too much of the old GREAT music that I grew up with, but we fans are STILL listening. Motown lives in the hearts of the fans, and STILL gets us dancing!! 💃🎶🎶🕺🎶🎶✌💕💕💕

This performance really lifted my spirits. The message is clear, and righteous. Stop hating. Be grateful for every day of life you're given.
"Well, I can't be bothered with sorrow
And I can't be bothered with hate, no, no
I'm using up the time but feeling fine, every day
That's why I'm telling you I just want to celebrate"

ABSOLUTELY!! Great music can be SUCH a force for good in our lives. 👍 I often wish that every person on the planet would take the time to listen to whatever music makes them HAPPY. Maybe some people have not discovered truly celebratory songs like this, but we need to crank up the volume in our own neighborhoods!! 🌎❤

This is one of those almost countless wonderful and often underated rock groups from the 70s, who also did have a great fusion sound of Motown and rock. I loved driving around in my car as a teenager and turning this song up. Great example of the GREAT capacity of rock music to make your spirits soar. Anthemic.

I still have a semi-afro from the 70's when I was a kid and never 'lost' it. Back in the early 90's someone was saying how 'out of style' that was...well, it appears now it's 'outta sight' once again! In fact, a stranger came up to me a few years back, he must've been in his late 20's early 30's, and said my hair was 'Epic', I was like '???" I figured that was a good thing...but I will not wear bell bottoms, still working on sideburns!

Fil, great analysis. I have a little Rare Earth story, sort of. About 20 years ago, I played bass in a band with a drummer who had bought Peter Rivera's drums a few years before. I always wondered what people thought when we would arrive at a gig with these drum cases painted "Rare Earth"!

9:09. "This isn't going to be an instructional video", as Fil proceeds to cleverly teach soul as expressed on the fretboard. And look at the crowd! The slim, happy, joyful people just celebrating and that is the sort of thing that doesn't translate well to the studio. What a show and an excellent example of the je ne sais quoi that is the groove.

California Jam at the long lost but not forgotten Ontario Motor Speedway. The hotel that stands on the sight has a museum for the short life of the track, and the streets have automotive related names. There is still an area of undeveloped land, and you can still see the berm made up the banking for Turn Three.

What's sad about this performance is that this would be the nearest to the original line-up just before the split and they never returned with the same power in terms of commercial success. Thanks for analyzing Rare Earth. They were my favorite band for a couple years beginning in 1971. Looks like this is from the California Jam in 1974. Born to Wander, Big Brother and (I know I’m) Losing You are great songs too. I finally saw them live at the California State Capítol for Earth Day in 1995. But sadly Pete Rivera was no longer in the band. Still love their music!

    It really was groovy Fil
Everyone started grooving when Rare Earth jammed...even on a Sunday afternoon.
Thanks Fil for a taste of the 70s.

This was great. Watched the Cali Jam on TV inthe '70s. Some great, maybe even iconic, LIVE performances. YT has 'em. EW&F, Sabbath, Black Oak, the Eagles (with Jackson Browne sitting in), Seals & Crofts,Deep Purple (early mk III), and ELP (Emerson & the revolving grand piano!!!).

I remember my Brother introducing me to Rare earth when he came back from Vietnam! I instantly fell in love with these Guys, along with Chicago, and Isaac Hayes.

I found your analysis video of Rare Earth's performance was quite interesting and informative. Incidently, you answered my question that I'd asked quite long ago--well before the internet happened: I wondered when a lead singer also played the drum set if the drumming physicality made his/her lead vocals role more challenging with regards to breath support(hope I put that correctly). Because I have asthma, it's inevitable for me not to be impressed. Fil, I thank you for answering a long unanswered question and for all that you do!
