His Father after the (war, and Russian capture, Berlin) joined the French foreign legionnaires...served in Algeria, then in Korea ...helping with the fight against the Chinese, and the Koreans from the North...he hate communism...the point is ALL SOLIDERS, FROM ALL SIDES BECOME HEARTLESS, HARDENED BUTCHERS, IF ONLY TO SEE ANOTHER DAY

I think that there's a very good reason they're called "WW2 Stories". I am reasonably aware of all the first hand accounts of many of these periods, battles and campaigns, and I haven't come across a single one that matched any of these accounts.
They're called stories because they are just that, STORIES.
Until I see the actual diaries, the written accounts and the details of the writers/units, I'll continue to believe that these are just a way for some sad, wanna be Waffen SS types to live out their fantasies in public.
If the producers wish to discuss this, and show their original source materiel, I'll be happy to withdraw this claim.
So far I have seen absolutely nothing that convinces me.

    • @Snafuski
      @Snafuski ปีที่แล้ว +3

Agree... Soldiers were not permitted to keep diaries in the Wehrmacht! Though some did, but they had to be very careful what they wrote, because the Party had their spies ... Some, like a fellow named Nöldeke, just jotted down notes in a calendar ... Many accounts have been published, they are in German of course. But careful listening and knowledge of German culture can help decipher some stuff between the lines.

It was a different world. Until the end of ww2, the amount of food produced by the world was LESS than what was needed to feed everyone. You either had to be brutal and take it from others or submit to whoever you’re trading with (since you’re screwed if they stop shipping you food). You tend to not be in a happy mood when hungry. After ww2 though, and thanks to pesticide, we for the first time in history started producing more food than there are people.

Part of it is Bolshevism. The Russian people have always been treated terribly by their ruling class but Stalin took the cake...murdering more of his own people than all his predecessors combined. Stalin may well have murdered more people than Hitler. These common soldiers were fighting a genuine menace! The fact that THEY were a menace every bit as evil was known to the individual soldier in varying degrees and believed even less frequently. In the end, the Russians didn't murder nearly as many German civilians as the other way 'round but it seems not for lack of trying. No, there no romance in war, no heroic ballads to be sung. Only banality and death and on this front in particular, a near total annihilation of two entire evil states and many of the people within them, guilty and innocent.

Even in America's armed forces there was empathy for nazism. Before the war the nazis in America held a huge rally in NYC 20k plus people attended. Nobody has to conflate history on that lame notion that the winners write the story. We lost Vietnam. Period, the Republic of Vietnam is not writing conflated stories about that we all saw it and know it. The Russians lost Afghanistan like the British before them, the Achaemenid Empire, Macedonia, Seleucid Empire, Umayyad Caliphate, Mongol Empire, Timurid Empire, Mughal Empire and us. They the Taliban are not "re-writing" history. It's a bald faced fact. The Union didn't "rewrite" the civil war. Let's stop the pretense. If you embrace the ideology of a nation bent on not just subjugating other nations but destroying whole races of people that is your business. But please stop hiding behind the cowardice of empathy for people especially soldiers who turned their sociopathy into something "honorable". Don't forget the Heer the
Wehrmacht was fighting to restore a sort of glory and spirit of the old "Prussian Empire". Resurrecting that ghost and the delusions therein. Easily led and Hitler was up to the exploitative task. Which shows all you gotta do is press the right buttons incant the right words. As far as Churchill he made no secret of his contempt for hitler and the Nazis. Are we going to ignore the fact that Russia and Nazis Germany were allies? What kind of dope would Stalin have been if he watched what Hitler was doing and didn't prepare for war? Only we sat back and let Hitler and Tojo make power moves.

I wonder whether the persistent logistics failures stem from negligence of the Wehrmacht Prussian aristocracy, or the naive ambitions of their corporal-in-chief. The diversion of so many transportation resources, particularly rail, to the “necessity” of war crimes and crimes against humanity certainly played a part.
The concerns of many company-grade officers for the wellbeing of their Landsers is a persistent theme in these series. Although they seldom had the power to affect real change, it is a welcome contrast to the general brutality of the Wehrmacht toward it’s own people.

I do not disagree. All of this seems to be part of the much delayed reconning of German society with this war. Yes, these old soldier stories (these are recollections of old soldiers written between the 1960s and the 1980) are entirely from their own personal perspectives. This same series also features Russian perspectives. None of the participants of these battles are still alive. Their Nazi leadership seldom lived beyond the 1940s. It's the story telling of old soldiers. A welcome if sobering counter-point to Hogan's Heroes. All of this written by a man who LOVED "Inglorious Basterds".

That's because most of these are written by the guys up on the front lines. I've read many of these memoirs, and most of the ones in the east make it a point to discuss the absolute brutality of the combat there, to the extent of not taking prisoners, shooting "Partisans" out of hand, etc. Of course nobody admits to war crimes, you nugget; they didn't want to go to jail. However, the idea that the entire Wehrmacht was nothing more than a ravening army raping and looting its way across Russia is simply not correct. Remember, most of the German soldiers were simply men doing a nasty job. A lot of German soldiers were prosecuted for things like rapes and looting; they considered this a crime, and bad for discipline. Not excusing the atrocities the Germans did, you understand, but it's important to keep perspective.

@@cammobunker "most of the German soldiers were simply men doing a nasty job". That is another excuse and falsehood. In Europe where I live very many people still dislike Germans. there remains a folk memory of the arrogance, the numerous insults, humiliations and other abuses including bullying and thefts committed by "German soldiers were simply men doing a nasty job". That is without including there brutality and murders, even the destruction of entire villages.
Never forget the overwhelming majority of Germans willingly fought for Hitler and all the evils he stood for. While they thought Germany was winning they celebrated.
Even after their first serious defeat, the Battle of Britain they failed to see much less act to avoid their impending doom.
While I've no problems with anyone who peacefully politely disagrees with that I still say those people bought their fate upon themselves.
There is though value in these recordings to help the uninitiated to understand, not everyone thinks the same way and there are people out there even today who will willingly kill you and your loved ones for their creed or in the case of Muslims, their 'religion'.
Those Germans do not deserve our sympathy or a whitewash of their crimes which were to numerous to list.
There is here a lesson from history. Failure to learn means history will inevitably repeat the lesson.

I've been playing these nightly for 3 or more years, over 3 or more channels, all the AI Stewie voice. At least 5 very distinct people/experiences. Often wondered if they were fiction or published biography. A sniper during retreat (Italy? Hungary? Was extremely grisly for details of red army savagery), one mostly detailing the Kurland pocket, etc
The other night was very disturbed when 2 deaths occured of men I've been hearing about and visualizing in my minds eye, one crushed alive by a T-34, another hung by one of those gorget wearing sonuvabitches for grabbing an armload of booze, chocolate and wurst from an apparent bait vehicle.
Always had to chuckle hearing people upset about a TV character dying. I get it now. Couldn't get back to sleep

One thing. About being. In army. You do make friends. And some enemies but not often. Some men act. And talk. Tough but arnt really just put up a front. !!!!

Perhaps you could improve the narration by pronouncing the German technical terms correctly?
E.g. "Knobelbecher" should be k-no-bell-ba-ccccchhhhh-air; "knobeln" means to shake the dices in a cup. That cup being made of leather so the stiff jackboots resembling that cup.
