    Hello there! If you're coming across this video for the first time and looking for a possible updated, I have a new series called Brand by Brand. It's not specifically for travel palettes, but takes a look at building palettes one brand at a time. Here's the Daniel Smith one! th-cam.com/video/cNlPgCCmEnE/w-d-xo.html

    Daniel Smith's yellow ochre is the only one I know off that is labeled as transparent, so that might be why it's so much more bright and nice :) Beautiful chart, really super versatile and simple!
    Coming up with a palette of 12 colors with the idea that they'd be "the hypothetical only 12 colors I could use from now on" sounds like a great challenge to think about, haha :)

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think they've also changed it since I bought my tube about two years ago. Mine is PY42 and rated semi-transparant, but their new one is PY43 and transparant. Regardless, I love the color :) It was the first yellow ochre I used, so when I saw others I was like "oh, no. eww." haha. Looking forward to hearing your 12 :)

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh, wow, their formulas change relatively often for certain paints. I feel like there's always a new color that's out of stock of its single pigment, or that has changed formula... Hard to follow! XP
      (My 12! Now I gotta figure out what they'd be, lol!)

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I actually didn't know about this one until you mentioned the transparency and checked! I don't think it's common per say, just coincidental in the colors we've been talking about haha.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, really! XD Seems to happen with a lot of yellows too.

      Sxhmincke offers a transparent version of that as well. They got their regular yellow ochre which is fairly opaque and a transparent version which is categorized as transparent, both made from the same pigment. Same goes for the burnt sienna, they got the regular opaque one and a transparent version :)

    I like your explanation of why you placed the colors in your palette the way you did. I never thought of mixers verses straight use colors. I may need to rearrange my portable palette similarly. I of course use different colors by daniel smith.

    Yay, another video. I love opening TH-cam and seeing that a video is up from you. I never thought of making a permanent travel pallet but it makes sense. I've always made it so I could swap out colors in my travel pallet. But now what I think I'll do because of you is have a permanent pallet for urban sketching locally, and one to switch out for vacations only. I also love the way you made your chart with darks and lights of all the colors.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the kind words! I love waking up to seeing your comments as well (I schedule them the night before). My main drive behind this is that I keep setting up palettes and then changing my mind. Before I wanted the flexibility but it got to a point that I feel like I'm wasting paint by having so many that I'll likely never or rarely revisit. I have four or five now that I can travel with depending on what I need. Hopefully that's plenty ;) Oh, and this is my favorite way of doing a color chart as well. I'm glad you like it!

    I’m a new subscriber; hungry to get started learning to use watercolors because (in skilled hands) they yield results that always take my breath away. I’ve been bingeing on your detailed, informative, clear, well-spoken and excellently edited videos; thanks so much for the tremendous effort you clearly put into each one! I am also fascinated by the beauty of the images you create with watercolors- you are marvelously gifted, and I trust that your subscriber base will eventually expand exponentially in recognition of your talent and artistic generosity! I do have a question about the swatches you displayed at the start of this video: not knowing anything about such things, I deduced that the codes on each swatch identified the pigment(s) used in each color... but both burnt sienna and burnt umber have the same code, though to me they seem to be different colors (and they would not each need a place on your palette if they were the same!). Is there a brief explanation (or an online resource) that might help me understand what “PBr7” and the other codes are signifying? Thanks again for your channel!! 💐💐💐

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi SistahRev! Thank you so much for your kind words. You are correct, that's the pigment number, in this case "Pigment Brown 7." Some pigments are incredibly consistent and do not vary much at all, like ultramarine blue (PB29). Others can be processed different and produce drastically different results, like this one here. I have an older video that explains it a bit here: th-cam.com/video/LShMczRNnWc/w-d-xo.html and you may be interested in that series as a whole if you want to learn more about pigment numbers :) It's slightly outdated, but the good news is that my Patrons just unlocked a reboot, so more episodes will be coming soon!

      @SistahRev 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Liquid Color Thanks SO MUCH for your speedy & helpful reply!! I did go watch the burnt sienna vid, and look forward to learning from the whole color series you produced! AND... I am so completely taken with your skills, attitude, and detail-oriented research and teaching style that you have become my primary watercolor instructor and my first Patreon patronee (is that a word?? Lol!)!!!! I have been looking for a watercolor class in my neighborhood that fits my schedule & budget, but to no avail... then it occurred to me that I can’t imagine a teacher/mentor I would rather have than you!! I wish I could afford to support you at a higher level, and get some direct feedback/interaction as I learn and grow, but I will SO enjoy and be blessed by the resources you will share at my Patreon level ($15)!! I trust that your dream/desire to be sustained full-time by your artistic teaching and productivity will become a reality before too long (hang in there; you are doing the good, hard work that will bring forth the fruit!); in the mean time, I hope my tiny contribution is an encouragement to you! 💐💐😂

    I love pthalo green. It really surprised me how many colors I can mix with it. So many pretty blue greens, and even a turquoise. It's one of my favorite greens when I need a blue green mix. In my palette I have a whole pan with a strand of pthalo green and pthalo blue in it.

    I want to get into watercolor and build myself a pallette but ik some things I'd want different. Like ik I want a purple one of that purple u see in my avatar, as its one of my goto colors in art, and second that light blue. I want to be able to get them easily without mixing and worry about mixing the things I'll reach for less. Then also probably a plainsgrey
    My only discussion right now is what palette is right for my way of painting, and what brand of paints to go for to start.

    Have you ever gone ahead and upgraded your portable painters further using the add on pans that fit into the brush well? I didn’t ever really use that brush plus i don’t like how the small side isn’t protected like the large side and the tip was getting messed up rather quickly…. So I really felt like having 6 additional colors was the way to go!

    Interesting selection of colors. 2 questions: 1. Why French Ultramarine instead of Ultramarine? 2. Are the colors in the upper right half of your chart just watered-down versions of the mixes in the lower left half of your chart?

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sharon, for the ultramarine, I hard a hard time telling the two apart when I first bought my paints. I still have a hard time. It's just the one I ended up with first so I use it because I'm familiar with this specific brand and formula and what to expect from it. I have a detailed comparison and explanation of ultramarine (and french ultramarine) in my first Color Spotlight video - hopefully that'll help! And secondly, yes :)

      In Liquid Color sounds interesting 😊 I'm sure that creates some interesting mixtures! You inspired me to paint a colorchart as well to see which mixtures I can get and in which color realms my palette was lacking. 😊 Also for future reference. I have a question: It looks like you put the colors in without pans, if you did it on purpose, why? 😊

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Knotted Fox I think I mentioned in the video but maybe not, that I was setting up what I thought would be a "permanent" travel palette. Silly me ;)

    • @lisaselzer6025
      @lisaselzer6025 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Liquid Color ah now I see what you ment with that 😃 Maybe you can scrape out the paint with something and put it in a pan and put your teal color in 😊 but you know without the pans the paint cant fall out, so thats a plus for the travel aspect... 😄

      I find indanthrone (or i actually have anthraquinone) to be quite warm and I would more likely use it in place of ultramarine. I also think primarily a sketching or travel palette is more likely going to be used for in a sketchbook rather than tjings to hamg on a wall so prussian blue is lijely AOK

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Funny Dude absolutely. Whatever suits your needs :) PY154 is very neutral and since I don't use yellow often I just used the one instead of splitting them. Depending on the brand of yellow ochre you could use it as your warm, just be careful for the really opaque brands if you're using it to mix :)

I happened to own all these colors except Prussian Blue. Would you still recommend Prussian Blue or have you changed your mind on that one? I will wait for your answer before I rush out and buy Prussian Blue. Thanks so much. I had watched some of Lindsay Wierich's videos, but I do not own the colors she uses, such as the cadmium colors.

    • @marybirder5663

      Prussian Blue is known to have a poor colorfast rating, sigh. I love Prussian and find Phthalo Blue a bit overpowering. Many people are removing it from their palettes.

    • @marybirder5663
      @marybirder5663 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, removing one of my favs, Prussian Blue, broke my heart. I've replaced it with Indanthrone Blue PB60, which is a bit darker. I have a hard time with Phthlo Blue PB15 b/c it tends to take over. Someone needs to find a way to make Prussian PB27 up to par in the lightfast category, sigh. Thanks so much for all you do, Denise.....you've gained another subbie here!

      It depends on your climate, if it's humid, I don't know that I can help. If you live in a dry climate, you can travel with them just fine. Given time to dry, they will LOOK wet still, but I finally was brave enough to tilt my big set on it's side and it does just fine.

      Good question! Hmm I suppose we should wait to see after this round of color spotlight, but for a travel set of 12 (not necessarily my absolute favorite 12, but ones that work well together if they're all you have) I'd make some small adjustments. After finding out about the lightfastness issues with Prussian, I'd swap back to phthalo probably, and I'd swap out the quin burnt orange for a cobalt teal or cerulean for a lighter blue.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Debra. Yes, I know that it contains gelatin, but as I mentioned I am not a vegan myself. I would switch to Hahnemuhle in a hot secondddd if it wasn't so outrageously expensive here. I truly love that paper. I'm not opposed to a vegan watercolor paper video in the future, it's just incredibly time consuming to email companies and research the information, so with other projects, I haven't been able to do so. It's on the list though :)

    I just watched your Cotman vs Van Gogh video and for some reason I cannot comment there. I just wanted to reply to you query about why people buy Cotman rather than any other student grade paints - in the UK at least, most places stock W&N and no other brands, be it an artist materials shop (rare these day - more and more are closing down), Hobbycraft or a stationer’s like WHSmith. People buy what they see.

      Lethy Guaimare I spend a lot of time on these video and for the most part do not get paid to do so. I make maybe $2-3 as of right now per video through ads. Doing lists and show notes like this takes even more time. I'm going to be releasing a Patreon soon in which addition show notes will be available for those who want to support the content provided here. For those who can't read them and don't want to support the time i put into these videos, I say the name several times. Thank you for your understanding.

    I may have accidentally clicked the dislike button on this video. I was having trouble with my app on the iPad and next thing I knew it said "disliked video" ACK!!! I'm so sorry as it was not intended.

      @agntsmth77---so don't! So annoying when I come across rude people leaving rude comments.
