  • Time to add the insulation i talked about earlier and then never did. I'm using a sheet of ceramic wool, sometimes called inswool or kaowool (if you call it kale-wool you misheard it, that wouldn't work, but it sounds edible which is nice). This is a lower temperature insulation than the fire brick, though higher temp versions are available.

    Paul, I know this has been forever and a day ago for you, but I found your vids on kiln building and you saved me so much money my sweet friend. My kiln manufacturers wanted 350 bucks for two new kiln walls.... On a kiln that is half the size of what you built here. Thanks to you, 50 bucks later, I'm good. You're the bees knees, thanks!!

    Got taught a trick from an old brick layer. I was cutting insulation with a sharp knife, like you, and it sucks.
    He took his brick hammer, and just hit the knifes edge a few times (with the sharp side).
    Which makes it into a crude serrated blade, and it worked a hell of a lot better :D

    Werner Herzog. Boy, that was random. I met that guy in college, Late 70’s. My wife at the time was a film maker. He came to OSU to be one of the judges at a film festival. I’ll never forget, he was wearing black fingernail polish at the party we threw for him....
    Talk about fashion forward for the 70’s.

    Try tacking the steel with your tig welder then smooth with flap disk. Then you won't have any stick out for the lid.

    It’s moving right along. Should be really well insulated. That should save some money and time.
    I’m waiting to see that cone firing, how well it does getting the right heat...

    What temperature does your Kiln reach? Great build I'd love to do something the same

    can you please tell me more info where you got the product to insulate, stuff I have found is crazy expensive

    The ceramic wool doesn't bother skin, it's not fiberglass.

    Perhaps this was explained earlier, why are you building an electric kiln when a big one was given to you?

    • @PaulsGarage
      @PaulsGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question! The smaller kiln I'm building can get hotter than the big one, takes less energy, and is far more controllable. The big one is on/off but this can be programmed to do anything, including heat treat cycles and mold burnout and everything. Also the big kiln only makes sense to fire when it's full, and that takes a long time, so development of clay/glazes takes too long. I wanted a do-everything small kiln for all these reasons. The only thing I wont do with it is metal casting because the gas foundry furnace works so much better (heats faster)

    I've never seen that style of respirator before. It's amazing, Where did you get it from?

    Does Ceramic wool can be used for Both Heat and Cold Insulator

    • @PaulsGarage
      @PaulsGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be, yes, but it doesn't insulate that well. The real benefit is the heat resistance. If you don't need heat resistance than there are better options out there

    • @ashwinceo3625

    isn't it nice when you make something that's actually been designed rather than winging it? i mean, some winging is important.

      func·tion·al·i·ty -
      1.the quality of being suited to serve a purpose well; practicality.
      2.the range of operations that can be run on a computer or other electronic system.
      Google it's stupid easy!
