ManaPeerfr It's true! Astérix is a French comic and both its creators are French. I always thought of it as part of the "franco-belge" genre, which I think it's loosely linked to. My bad :S
Even though I'm American, I'm a huge fan of Asterix! I've no idea how faithfully the English dubs (when they exist) of some of these animated features represent the French originals, but I enjoy them nonetheless! (I even have a soft spot for the not-so-good ones, heh.) Awesome video!
Fun fact about Mansion of the Gods It was the last Asterix film to feature Roger Carel as Asterix. Roger voiced Asterix all the way from the start. When Mansion of The Gods was announced, Carel had retired from acting, but agreed to voice Asterix one last time.
The film Mansion of the Gods was a commercial success in France also because it was directed by Alexandre Astier. He is well known (in France) for his comedy television series "Kaamelott" which had great humor.
I'm uruguayan and I've been a fan of Asterix since childhood. I just found this video looking for reviews of the last movie (The secret of the magic potion, wich I saw yesterday for the first time) and even if I didn't find one I'm not dissapointed. Sir, you just earned a new subscriber.
Thank you so much for subscribing and for watching my video! I actually have a review of The Secret Of The Magic Potion coming up soon on this channel. I hope you'll enjoy it!
@@DisJunkTV I am rewatching all of the A&O movies with my friend and this song really stood out. The song in A&O in Britan is also really good, I love that the composer (Vladimir Cosma is a legend) just had the same song but in english since they are in England.
As an Asterix fan in the US, my favorite film of the series is "Asterix vs Caesar" from 1985. It's the first one I watched on VHS as a child. Also, Astérix est la is the best song and I stand by it!
Interesting video. I wish I could delve more into the Asterix franchise even though it isn't very big here, and there are certain restrictions preventing me from checking it out. I hope you've reviewed the Secret of the magic potion.
While I agree with the main criticisms of Asterix Conquers America, in the English release of the film, they heavily improved the "We Are One People" song, and it sounds MUCH better than the original. Are you also aware of this or if so what do you think of it?
I love all the Asterix movies I've seen I got to say that I've always had a soft spot for the Viking one because that movie had such a smoother fluid animation , and I like the English version of it ans each of the characters and well yes it divulging from the source material I felt like for modern audience is it okay and the romance between Justforkix and Abba was actually quite real cute compared to most love stories in movies like ugh Twilight, plus Sean "Samwise" Astin played Justforkix and Paul Garret from Everybody loves Raymond as Obelix is quite good and John Dimaggio!
I'm from Vancouver, Canada and I grew up with Asterix and Obelix. They're probably my favorite French comics..I'm also a big fan of Moebius, The Incal, in particular. But the Asterix books are so fun and you actually learn a lot of ancient history etc from these beautifully drawn comic book masterpieces. I also loved the animated films....the CG ones are fairly fun and I liked the first live action film, but not the others.....just thought I'd show that some of us Anglos love Asterix, as well.....and I'm of Celtic descent, too.
These would come on every weekend in South Africa when I was growing. Granted, I probably missed out on most of the jokes but I still looooooooved them! Asterix and the Mansion of the Gods was an amazing surprise when it popped up a few gears ago. I just wish they kept the original accents though.
I agree with you about Asterix conquers America. I absolutely loathed the movie. And it's no surprise if Asterix and the Vikings reminded you of that movie when they sail to Scandinavia, because that part is coming from "The Great Crossing", like Asterix conquers America. In "The Great Crossing", Asterix and Obelix return to Europe with Vikings who spotted them because Asterix was holding a torch on a small island. So they bring them back to Danemark, thinking they are natives from that strange land they just discovered. Asterix and Obelix get back to their village from there.
Have to disagree with Asterix and the Big Fight. It's a beautiful film, appearance wise, but it tried way too hard to be dark and mature. The overly serious tone feels pretentious, and Getafix's amnesia, which was played for laughs in the comic with the Druid making silly comments and laughing at everyone, feels depressing. It’s reminiscent of an Alzheimer’s patient. The legionary being given the potion was creepy and poorly paced. They should have just stuck with his skin changing colour whilst he complains about it. It might not have been visually interesting but at least it wouldn’t have been so uncomfortable to watch as seeing Asterix and Obelix torture someone.
Same here, the main gripe I have with this film is that on top of trying too hard to be mature, it's boring and goes nowhere. I feel like there's too much setup and not enough payoff. Also, it has little to no fighting, and as an Asterix fan, it's a big no-no for me.
I've never heard anyone say bad things about the theme of Asterix vs Caesar / Asterix in Britain before. It's catchy and memorable. The original theme was just annoying.
Strangely enough everything you dislike about the movies, are exactly the things that makes me LOVE the movies. Like the music. Except for the Big Fight, I agree with you.

As a non-French speaker, I actually didn’t like Asterix and the Big Fight that much, and I’m pretty certain it’s because the English dub was kind of horrible. There were actually two English dubs. The British one had Bill Oddie voice Asterix, which made him sound closer to 85 than 35 years old, and also the picture and sound quality of the movie I pirated off TH-cam was pretty bad, so I couldn’t hear him very well. The American one had voice Asterix, which….I don’t think I need to elaborate on. I could not take him seriously at all. Rosey Grier as Obelix was also hard to take seriously. But your glowing review on it actually changed my perspective a bit. I did like both the books it was based on, and the actual story was pretty good. If anyone knows where I can watch the movie in French with English subtitles, I’d love to give it another chance.
@@DisJunkTV I checked Amazon Prime. The only Asterix movie they had available in French was Astrix in Britain. They had a couple other of the old ones but not in the French language. I know Astérix made to the states for little and wasn't as popular as The Smurfs & Tin-Tin but if it had more US dubs I think should have gotten Frank Welker as Astérix and Don Messick when he was alive and or even Jeff Bennet to voice him.
In Czech Republic they've to redubbed Asterix and the surprise for Ceasar in 2014 because the original Czech dub contains stronger language, for example words like: Idiot, moron, cretin, brute.
Hey, my guy you missed another Asterix CGI movie called Asterix: The Secret of the Magic Potion. This is like the 2nd CGI animated film from the Asterix franchise. You might want to take a look as well and what's your opinion about it. You can thank me for pointing that out. Much appreciated! :)
In Sweden the dubbs of the Asterix movies varies in quality. the frist three movies have very good dubbs. Asterix Versus Caesar's dubb isn't very good. the dub of Asterix Conquers America is't good att all. Asterix in Britain has a good dubb .the Big Fight has an acceptable dubb. Asterix and the Vikings had a good if unremarkable dubb. Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods had a good dub. Asterix & Obelix Take On Caesar and Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra had great dubbs, at the Olympic Games had an Ok dub with one or two stand out performances and God Save Britannia had an ok to good dub.
I will admit...the song In Asterix Conquers America is the only thing I like about that movie. I had the movie recorded on a VHS and I pretty much ruined it by fast-forwarding to it. Granted, the song is much better in english. But I can see why you don't like it, especially with the visuals are just silly
My take is it’s just lazy character design, I replied to someone about this before. I think my criticism would apply to any character who is depicted in such a clumsy way.
The problem is, non-german-speaking people will never experience "Asterix in America" in it's true form: The "Schwörerdeutsch" Dub, which is basically a "street German" version with lots of insults, grammatically not correct and less... intellectual. For example, the chief is introduced by the narrator like this: "He was the boss and only had like one fear: The sky headbutting him. But he didn't worry. it's like he always said: "I'll have 2 doner: one with onions, and one with not onions". Which basically means: "Why have a doner, if you have can 2." Or something like that. The song with the native people is a techno song. It's really funny and really stupid.
Here is my personal opinion about each animated Asterix movies. I will go by least favorite to favorite. 10. Asterix Conquers America: I don't mind watching the movie again, I like that the Native Americans are friendly (especially later on), and Obelix with the Indian princess was kind of cute, and I actually liked the "We are One People song". However I Didn't like Caesar's henchmen, his design, his voice, and his character (ugh), I didn't like Obelix' voice it just didn't match him, and I Totally agree with you about like the Indian Princess' Design (I didn't like her outfit either) it Was too much, as well as that ugly CGI, 9. Asterix The Gaul: I'm pretty much gonna have to agree with you on this one. The animation Isn't all that great, you can tell that it Is the first one, and there weren't any effects on the magic potion, my one problem with it was that there weren't any women in the entire film. We see a small gaul child but that was pretty much it. But the interesting things were that the bard's music Wasn't That bad (when he was playing the fiddle) and instead of being tied to a tree he is just tied up and gagged while standing up. Asterix and Getafix manage to get out of a situation themselves by using brains and wits, and Asterix goes by himself to find Getafix instead of having Obelix go with him. 8. Asterix and Cleopatra: I get that this is your favorite one, but just hear me out. The animation Got better, I Really like the music numbers (especially that poisonous cake song), it is the first introduction to the pirate characters who look Super different compared to right now, and the start of the affects of the magic potion. Although it was disappointing that Cleopatra was the only female character in the film (other than just the back up singers they were just there). The only thing I Didn't think was needed was the scene when Getafix gets captured since was only used for a few minutes, and I really wish the villains were shown more often. Those were my only problems with the film. 7. Asterix and The Big Fight: I thought this film was okay (certainly Not great). The animation was good, I liked Some of voice casting in both British dub (Ron Moody, Brian Blessed, Obelix' voice) and American dub (Henry Wrinkler as Asterix and the Gaul chief), and the ending where the women were fighting the Romans was the best part. The problems I Did have with this film were Getafix going crazy, and villagers were So clueless by superstitions that they didn't believe Asterix. 6. Asterix In Britain: I really liked Asterix' cousin, Dogmatix being on his own for catching the wagon thief, the return of the pirates, the animation was really good, and the introduction to the whole fish fight, and I do like the voices in this one as well. The scenes with the tower, and the roman destroying the statues were both really funny. Not much to say about this one. 5. The 12 Tasks Of Asterix: I Really like how our heroes complete the tasks, the characters voices, it was the first appearance of the blacksmith, the fish sales guy, the old man, and Finally the female gauls, and I liked the tour guide guy who checks off the lists of the tasks Asterix and Obelix complete. It is kind of interesting that Dogmatix isn't seen helping out as much. 4. Asterix Vs. Caesar: The animation is beautiful, I like the characters' voices as well, Caesar's henchman is so much better than the one from Conquers America, despite that Panacea and her fiance's lives were in jeopardy they were pretty brave, and were seen defending themselves and talking back as well, and Dogmatix once again proves to be a useful companion. 3. Asterix: The Mansion Of The Gauls: The CGI is really good, I liked the Roman family that was added in, once when Asterix realizes he is out of magic potion he manages to out smart the Romans and it was Really impressive to see him fighting the Roman with his sword and holding the chain that is holding the cage up without dropping it, and the henchmen were pretty funny. It is also interesting to see the bard was just tied up but not gagged this time when there is a feast. The only problem I had with this was Obelix' voice, like Conquers America it didn't really match him. 2. Asterix and The Vikings: I Loved the voice acting, the animation is beautiful, I liked the relationship the teenagers had with each other, the Vikings were awesome, the villains were fun and entertaining, and I liked Abba's personality. I will admit that the only two problems I had with this were that Asterix and Obelix were more like side characters while the teenagers had the more focus (although it Is the perfect example that if they weren't the main characters they Do work as side characters in this than in that third live action movie), and didn't get why the male vikings were blond and the female vikings were red heads (same with all of the guals). 1. Asterix And The Secret Of The Magic Potion: Like Mansion Of The Gods the animation is Really good, maybe better, there are more druids other than just Getafix, there are Finally more gaul children, the men (minus the bard) go along with Asterix, Obelix, Getafix, and the little girl; while the women are the ones guarding the village, Getafix gets a back story, it has the most threatening and interesting villain in the franchise I have ever seen, and it was interesting to see the bard join the feast instead of getting tied up and gagged like usual.
12 tasks was a really great movie,*o r w a s i j u s t b l i n d e d b y n o s t a l g i a ?*.to be honest idunno i just really enjoyed the movies as a kid and i still adore the movie,so uh. You tell me ;)
Interestingly, I agree with you on almost everything, except for this: Asterix vs. Cesar is in my opinion one of the worst! The pacing is awful, the story is a broken Frankenstein's monster of the original stories, the humour mostly falls flat, and overall the characters feel weirdly unnatural. I see why you like the almost drowning scene, it's inarguably well made, but to me it doesn't fit at all because no sense of peril was conveyed before and it just comes out of nowhere. I think this film was just terribly written. The drawings and animation are okay. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it a lot! Greetings from Germany =)
You almost convered my opinion about this movie, my friend. BUT there is an another issue that suprisingly no one hasn't noticed that. This movie is depressing to watch it, something not used in an Asterix movie. It's Man of Steel all over again (which means that something it was light hearted and fun suddenly turned into something really dark and unpleasant to watch it) and here are all the reasons: 1. Rachism from Romans that even and Magneto would have reacted awkwardly. 2. Kidnapping. 3. Slavery but presented in an ungly way. 4. Sexual abuse. 5. Survival in the desert. 6. Kidnapping again but this time by slave traders and their selling. 7. Ceaser's offer: "work for me as slaves or prepare to be eaten alive by lions." 8. Frabala's song which it shows a feeling of giving up (and who could blame her after all the horrible things that they went through and their deathly fate that it is awaiting for them? 9. The scene in which Asterix almost gets drowned. 10. Indefix's struggle in the sewers and his fight with the rat. 11. Suicide. 12. Every single Roman (with a slight exception of Ceaser in the end ia portrayed as mean assholes.) 13. Asterix's deppresion in the end because he loved Frabala and he couldn't have her. Enjoy it!! :)
Well personally I don't mind dark themes, and if handled well, you can still get a funny movie out of a sad story (e.g. Shaun of the Dead), but I'll agree that all those topics contributed to a viewing experience that's not exactly uplifting.
This was actually the first Asterix movie I saw, (I was 4 I think?) and personally i think it is the best. It may not be the usual comedy as Asterix usually is, but it is a great adventure movie. It may have all of those darker tones, but that is what makes it more memorable.
Hmm, I've always been fairly fond of Vs Caesar. Some weak bits, but still much fun. The French version of Conquers American seems even weaker, but Craig Charles helped as the English Asterix voice.
Gereatrix has such a hot wife compare to the Chiefs wife no offense to her also...her eng dub voice is Lucille Bliss who played Smurfette she rest in peace.
Just look at Geriatrix's wife. She was just as sexualized. These films are a product of the times and makes use of stereotypes. If you wanna call out Asterix then just look at the way they depict black charcters - they are pretty stupid, subserviant and giving off that 'yes masser' vibe. Oh and let's not forget the massive pink lips. But like I said, it is a product of its times (1950s). That being said, Asterix and The Vikings came out much later and still showed black people the same way they did before.
The Asterix and Obelix Take on Caesar song was one of my favorite as a kid, I really liked the retro sound!
are you kidding the 12 tasks was the greatest movie
it was pure comedy gold
I didn't like that
Yeah it's my favorite.

Well, "franco-belge" refers to comics from both countries, so yes, Asterix is franco-belge, even if it's most precise to say it's french.^^
Well Gauls are basically ancient french...

However I Didn't like Caesar's henchmen, his design, his voice, and his character (ugh), I didn't like Obelix' voice it just didn't match him, and I Totally agree with you about like the Indian Princess' Design (I didn't like her outfit either) it Was too much, as well as that ugly CGI,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Hoping to review the new Asterix movies soon 👍
You're welcome.
I lnow they changed his name to Panoramix for the film but he will always be Getafix to me.
11:34 15:19 ok that's a little something
12 tasks was a really great movie,*o r w a s i j u s t b l i n d e d b y n o s t a l g i a ?*.to be honest idunno i just really enjoyed the movies as a kid and i still adore the movie,so uh. You tell me ;)
I really liked the video overall, except for what you had to say about the masterpiece that is Astérix est là
Nice! You should do Tintin sometime!
Thanks! I'll definitely talk about the Tintin movies at some point. Stay tuned!
Interestingly, I agree with you on almost everything, except for this:
Asterix vs.
It's Man of Steel all over again (which means that something it was light hearted and fun suddenly turned into something really dark and unpleasant to watch it) and here are all the reasons:
1. Rachism from Romans that even and Magneto would have reacted awkwardly.
2. Kidnapping.
3. Slavery but presented in an ungly way.
4. Sexual abuse.
5. Survival in the desert.
6. Kidnapping again but this time by slave traders and their selling.
7. Ceaser's offer: "work for me as slaves or prepare to be eaten alive by lions."
8. Frabala's song which it shows a feeling of giving up (and who could blame her after all the horrible things that they went through and their deathly fate that it is awaiting for them?
9. The scene in which Asterix almost gets drowned.
10. Indefix's struggle in the sewers and his fight with the rat.
11. Suicide.
12. Every single Roman (with a slight exception of Ceaser in the end ia portrayed as mean assholes.)
Thank you! :)
First CGI movie was very decent, but then that abomination in 2019 happened.
Gereatrix has such a hot wife compare to the Chiefs wife no offense to her also...her eng dub voice is Lucille Bliss who played Smurfette she rest in peace.
Got Inspired and made a video of my own : th-cam.com/video/6GYxNmAX5jU/w-d-xo.html
Watched it and enjoyed it, thank you for sharing!
DisJunkTV is crazy. 🙄👈
Betty boop was made in the 30s not the 20s
That's true: 1930 was her first appearance. I was being hyperbolic.
The other movies use like disney animation you know i'm a disney dode ok.
You talking so wierd are you american?
where's our Asterix anime at?
