Is it better to tow a jeep with a small class c motorhome or a fifth wheel with a truck? Here are the pros and cons we've found RVing from Death Valley National Park to the Alabama Hills east of the Sierra Nevada.

Marissa you can probably be my daughter but I told my husband if I was a little kid I would definitely would have loved to have a mom like you! You are so much fun and approach every challenge with a positive attitude. Love the fact that you and your husband share your challenges because no one learns anything when nothing goes wrong. So thank you so much for sharing!

You two are TRUE parents. Nothing will or can ever replace these times you have with your children. Children seek adventure and you are handing it to them. They will always remember these times with you both.
I was lucky to have parents just like you. Everything we did or went was for adventure sake. Camping, dune bugging, mountains, boating, motorcycles...the list goes on.
I am now 58, me and my siblings STILL talk about all our great adventures with our parents. I do not have children to pass such greatness along, but I absolutely love watching you both show your children our wonderful land.
Keep on keeping on, and prayers for safe travels to you all.

It is not talking to yourself. It is thinking out loud. Sometimes one has to verbalize a question in order to find an answer. So yes, go ahead and answer your own questions.

Try putting the jeep into (reverse) gear with the engine off. Then start the engine while it is in gear and back up. Then turn the engine off, shift it into 1st gear, and then start the engine again to move forward. This may help you move it until you get it fixed. Also, check your clutch hydraulic fluid level in the reservoir.

You can put Marisa in the Jeep to steer the Jeep while you back up. Then you don’t have to worry about the wheels going the wrong way. Instead of a person pushing the motorhome could push.

Im not sure if I missed an episode but in order to flat tow a manual jeep you have to put the transfer case in neutral and the trans in second or third so it lubricates the gears. If not you'll burn up the transmission.

God is Hilarious!! I was literally wearing Marissa’s exact same outfit this morning; and I said to my husband “This outfit would be perfect for going on a hike, or doing my first oil change, that I will be doing today.” However hours later after I paused this video I realized that we were matching outfits, after I had already gotten changed into something different! 😂 My husband and I have been living in our 5th wheel for the past year now (with 3 kids under 3 years), and lived in a motorhome the year before, with our 2 toddlers. I wouldn’t change a thing, except for we definitely miss being more mobile in our motorhome, where as our 5th wheel now is just parked as a house.
    Sending love from 🇨🇦. 💕

I definitely talk to myself and virtual friends whom I've never met. I got a 2021 Jeep Gladiator for my 70 th birthday. We absolutely love it and have SO MUCH FUN in it!!! I am also slowly renovating my 1981 Class C Lazy Daze with 46000 original miles!! This is the idea I have for my future nomad life. My husband has a Ford 150 with the back (6 ft bed) DIY camper (that does not look like it) and towing our E bikes and (yet to get) a ConAm 3 wheeler.

Here’s how you can back up the Jeep:
Place a long bungy cord around the bottom of the steering wheel and attach the two hooks onto the base of the driver’s seat. That will keep the front wheels from turning the wrong direction as you back ip the Jeep.
It’s time to teach Hensley how to steer, for now.
JJ is the Boss Baby! LOL!!!!

Tow truck drivers trick run the seat belt through the steering wheel and then latch it and tighten it up with it running through the bottom of the wheel it won't allow the wheel to turn or one of you can climb in and steer the jeep while backing slowly

AND THEN you got to the Alabama Hills!!!!! Wow!! So gorgeous and wonderment inspiring with the crazy boulders and terrain backed by the Sierra Mountain range! Big WOW! We really want to visit the Alabama Hills someday... we just got to figure out if we're going to do it or not with a large wooden fifth wheel/tiny house on wheels.

Thanks for the video. I agree hooking and unhooking the toad is easier than a TT. Even I can do it and I am a 70 yr old woman with two total knees. I didn't even feel the car behind us. I only knew it was there by looking at the camera. My husband put on another camera so we could see past the car. We have a tow button on the end of the gear shift that helps with controlling the transmission. We just saw the Top Gun movie and they had scenes flying through that canyon.

Yes I talk to myself all the time. 😆
As a bus driver (45 feet) I can say that yes once you get on a freeway the winds hit and you really MUST keep both hands on the wheel! Can be unnerving. We have a travel trailer (30’) honestly since I’m used to driving a straight long vehicle, I find towing the trail trailer more intimidating.
Always wanted a Jeep but read reviews from CR and decided against it. They’re definitely the best for adventures!

There are tougher passes in California. Drive Tioga Pass which accesses the east entrance of Yosemite. Try Highway 198 accessing Sequoia National Park from the Visalia area of California. Also Highway 108, Sonora Pass, might be ill advised while towing a vehicle behind a Class C. There is at least one switchback that has a high chance of being too tight for their rigs. I could name more, but I think I've made my point.

We love Alabama Hills! We try to go at least once a year since we’re not far. It’s much more popular now since we first visited back 7 years ago.

When you're towing up a grade or down a grade, take it off of overdrive. Only use overdrive on the flat.

We had the same motor home and the problem with that corner bed is that we are in our mid-60s and our shoulders are not what they used to be, so it can be difficult to crawl out of bed. Enjoyed those Alabama Hills

Not sure on your year of Jeep but when flat towing mine the owners manual said to put the transfer case in neutral and stick shift went into 2nd gear. This is on a manual trans Jeep Wrangler.
Supposedly not doing this could burn up the manual trans at least on the 1997-2006s.

I flat tow a JK (2007-2017). The owner's manual doesn't say anything about putting the transmission in a particular gear, just to put it in gear.

I use voice to text whenever I'm making comments on videos. So now when I'm speaking sometimes I'll add punctuation. My kids often wonder why I'm talking to myself and adding punctuation while I'm working on the lawn mower.

There a trick to backing with a vehicle attached
You can fashion a heavy rubber bungee to the steering wheel to keep it straight while backing. Might give it a shot. 👍🏻

    • @drinkinslim
      @drinkinslim 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Obviously only good for going straight back, otherwise I could imagine things going horribly wrong, LOL.

    • @chilidog73
      @chilidog73 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually, the force of a turn will cause the front wheels to turn and then the bungee helps correct them when straightening up.

That’s interesting I deliver motorhomes professionally and the worst part is maneuvering around smaller gas stations, so I might try that bungee cord thing.

    • @chilidog73

@@troywiltshire5272 For sure. And always get an outside pump, pull in facing the road when possible and don't forget that the hose reaches like 10 ft so you don't have to cuddle the pump. I deliver trailers so I feel your pain. :)

@@chilidog73 All that stuff I already do, but sometimes the cheapest fuel is at the smallest stations, plus sometimes you get very inconsiderate people that block you in and you have to wait until they finish shopping and using the bathroom before they come back and move…

In our 35 years of RVing we've had 2-TTs, 2-5ers, 2-class Cs, 4-class As and a DP. Our order of preference is DP, Class A, TT, 5er and Class C. TT before 5er because we no longer like stairs inside the RV. MH over towable because driving a big truck 365 days a year for regular transportation got old REAL quick.
    Love your videos.
