Mam was born on Walney,.Dad, Barrow Island. Been going there all my life (70 years) and have a second home on Walney. The friendliest people on the planet 🙂
Appreciate you both showing barrows nicer side, I usually see videos only showing the degrading parts of the town. Yous would have loved to have gone to the nature reserve and the very end of walney
We had not heard much about Barrow but really think Walney Island is a hidden gem. If we get to go back we will be exploring further as lots of locals have said we missed out on the nature reserve and other spots too. Thank you for your comment 😊
@The Hills Explore I'll agree with you walney is definitely a hidden gem. There's 2 nature reserves. The one down near the light house is amazing, get to see the seal colony
Thank you for the comment. We’ve been blown away by the amount of local people who have seen this vlog and we hope we did the area justice. We definitely need to return and do a part 2 and check out all the recommendations we’ve had. 😊 x
It was great to stumble across a coastal spot that was so empty mid summer. I love an accidental find where you end up having a totally different day to the one you thought! 😊
Nice Vlog friends! Love seeing a the beautiful sunshine and that coasta coffee looked delicious!loved the water views! Loved the outfit transition edit! Great filming
Local here Piel island is worth a visit. Get the ferry over from row island. The ferry do seal watching trips as well. Like they're Facebook page for updates. Love how you've included the seagulls.😂😂😂
The seagulls make the seaside! And did you see how that one climbed over his friend on the railing!! Rudeness 😋 Oh we’d like to see the seals. Is that all year round?
@@TheHillsExplore There's a bird sanctuary as well over south end caravan site. The ferry is weather dependent. So if it's high winds torrential, rain or a storm expected they don't run.
Thanks for the reminder of lovely sunny days on this grey miserable January day. I saw your arm right up your back Riki on the way into Costa 🤣 Oh! That beach at Walney Island is lovely 🥰 Our dogs would love it. Looking forward to this year’s adventures. You know we love a good adventure ☀️🚍
Yes poor Riki 🙄😆 The beach was such a great find and perfect for doggies. 🐶🐶 I can’t wait to see the sunshine again this year and hope to bump in to you on our travels 😊 I followed your travel to Europe vlog to the letter to plan our trip last year ✅👌🏻
My old stomping ground. Born and raised on Barrow Island, served my engineering apprenticeship in the shipyard & spent much of my spare time buggering about in boats on Walney channel and Morecambe Bay…… happy times
@@TheHillsExplore if you’re ever up that way again, try getting over to Piel Island. A 12th century castle, an 18th century pub and a row of 8 ships pilot’s cottages (one of which is still within my family’s ownership) that were built in 1875…. It’s an idyllic place and somewhere else that I spent a large part of my childhood ❤️
Glad you enjoyed Walney Island. Earnse Bay beach at the north end of the golf course is also great, and Biggar Bank, a little further south. The site of the Sandy Gap community centre was once the 'Beachcomber Cafe', a quite popular spot when I was growing up, and had a little 'crazy golf' area off the back. You actually walked past the house I grew up in on Central Drive, on your way to Sandy Gap. So nice to see my home town in a positive light. Cheers. Great aerial shots and editing by the way.
Thank you for your comment and that’s lovely you saw your childhood home! We had a great day and Walney Island was in unexpected find. We must go back again and see how the Sandy Gap community centre has come along. So many people have pointed out other landmarks we missed. So next summer we need to go back!
If you can remember the old Chewits advert with the monster that had the tag line 'Chewier than Barrow-in-Furness bus station', that carpark with the Costa was where it stood.
@@TheHillsExplore You should have visited Roanhead beach all sand & dunes then over to Roa island and ferry to Piel, walk the castle eat at the pub & go seal watching
Yes definitely a good place to check out away from the crowds. Meathop Fell was a great little site. The sign lit up like a beacon at night 😄 Have a lovely time x
I am glad you enjoyed my home town. When you were at sandy gap if you had walked 300 yards left (as you look at the sea) you would have found the Round house community hub and got refreshments and just beyond that the Castle public house
We had a lovely day. It’s really frustrating to have missed things - but also a good excuse to return 😊 It would be great to return and see how the new Sandy Gap Visitors Centre
Best way to come in, through the lanes. The derelict buildings at barrow island were the tea house and canteen for the shipbuilding. They ceased being so in the late 80s early 90s I think. There was also a coffee house opposite on the Better side lol. But gone are the days people would ask to go to the coffee or tea house on the bus. The big school you approach on Walney past the golf club, I used to live in the caretakers house in the school grounds back when I went to that school. I spent many evenings down the beach back before they filled the views with the wind farms (unfortunately). Where the Sandy gap visitors centre is being built, 20 years ago was a cafe called the beachcomber. Back then the Fair used to come to the beach. It had moved from the big park, where it used to be before they built the leisure centre and the area turfs. But it caused disturbances to the residential areas and there would be lots of damage to the school. You definitely need to pay roanhead a visit. Sandy beach. Not pebbles. Overlooks the dude on estuary. Views are of black Combe and millom.
Well done Riki, taking one for the team in Costa! 🤣 also very considerate to walk back alone to get the van. Beth looked very relaxed on your return 😆 lovely video

A bit naughty flying the drone there, it's right on the exclusion zone for Walney airfield (as is most of central Barrow unfortunately) - not to mention the no-fly-zone around the submarine facility. Still, no harm done, and some beautiful shots of the area!
