I had that exact same problem with Airbnb. When I pulled up to my house in Omaha, it had three men sitting on the front porch drinking and was in an extremely dangerous neighborhood. I immediately called Airbnb and canceled the reservation. I notified my credit card company not to pay and after submitting proof I was not responsible to pay the bill. Be very careful, Airbnb does not vet the properties very well

Funny story no not like yours…we went to Wichita, and on my GPS I accidentally put in W instead of E or vice versa. We went to find our abode, and it was in the area of Wichita State, and the neighborhood was quite sketchy. Fortunately as we did not find any house like the pictures I double checked and we shot across town to a very stable middle class neighborhood, less than a mile from our daughter’s house.

The reviews are not reliable anymore. The owners can often get negative ones removed, for example if he reviewer uses superlatives like "the worst." Also, now many owners ask renters to not leave a review if they can't leave a 5-star review.
You can't trust reviews on Air B&B anymore.

Here in Nashville there are TONS of Air BnBs in Crack neighborhoods. Developers buy these old run down houses in bad parts of town and build the tall and skinnys and make them look really nice on the inside and out so when people look online they look brand new which they are...they're just next to meth labs with bars over their windows. 3 words of advice... Google Earth View!

I would say Google Street View on Maps. Go around the block while you are at it. But do check the date on the image though. They still had a picture of a Moose Lodge when I looked last year, and the same property has been like five different restaurants and is now a thrift shop, before they posted updated images.

How about just don’t stay in short term rentals. They are a blight on the neighborhood. My house is on the gulf coast in a private neighborhood and the short term renters are infuriating. They are here to party and they are disrespectful to everyone and everything, including the wildlife. They think they rented the whole neighborhood. Then they leave and next batch shows up. It’s just so old already.

Personally I would also look for hidden cameras or listening devices inside too. The ( Covert) Hidden Cameras are a real problem in today’s climate, when renting an AirBnB or hotel room. Let’s face it you really don’t know who you’re renting from. Just because the person(s) are nicely dressed and well spoken, doesn’t exclude them from being sexual deviants. Especially in locations where younger people and girls may rent a room or house, for spring break or a week or so in the summer. I’ve had people ask me to come sweep their hotel room or AirBnB for devices. We have found them in some places, though most property owners are good people just making an extra income. However always keep a look out for devices, and I’m confident Jason can tell the people watching what to look for. Not my channel, and Jason is an expert in his field. Awesome channel by the way!! 👍😎

Never thought about the door code thing. I guess it would be a good idea to have one of those portable locks that as a small right angle plate that sticks into the doorjamb/striker plate then has a ratcheted slider that you put on and snug it up to the door so the door can't open.
Two other things to look for course are ways of emergency egress, and of course you can't forget spy cameras. 😃

This summer I stayed with family in an Airbnb in the Tennessee mountains. The home was quite secure however, we were not told about the resident bears (3) who made their daily rounds checking for food. Now we were all adults and learned by the second day to look out for the bears who regularly came out of the woods. I just wondered what would have happened if we had children and let them out to play that first day. I think we should have been told about the bears.. In this case it was not people to be aware of but bears.

I never got the whole AirBnB craze. Too many things to worry about plus all the ridiculous extra fees and rules. We stayed at a VRBO once and the coffee pot was decades old and nasty. It didn’t work. Had to run to the store and buy another one. Did not get reimbursed. If you want a kitchen, just reserve a room in a residential hotel with suites. You get service and security and no secret cameras or sketchy neighbors.

I've done the universal remote thing before when I was a drunk college student but the funniest thing was I got a universal remote on ebay for the RC cars and trucks my kids had, the factory remotes didn't last. You just had to turn a dial to find the right frequency. I woke up one Christmas morning to my son who was only 9 at the time, laughing his ass off. Other kids in the neighborhood had received RC vehicles for Christmas but the controller we had would overpower the factory ones and he was running all of their stuff. The parents would grab the controllers from their kids and my son would run the thing away from them. He's in his mid 20's now and we still laugh about that.

I have stayed at Airbnbs and hotel rooms in Costa Rica with paper thin doors. I;d barricaded the door w the mini fridge etc and put glass bottle on the windowsills etc.

I typically travel to reciprocating states for my CPL, always carry. And wether hotel or airbnb, stack shit against exterior doors at night, chairs, table, couch, to a least delay/make noise to alert any incoming.

Air BnB are dangerous. My friend stayed in one of those in Phoenix and didn't realize it was down the street from a homeless encampment and they got robbed and beaten.
I'd never stay in one of those places.

Thank you, sir, all great points, but I like how you pointed out the importance of the surrounding and nearby neighborhoods, as this is often an overlooked factor by many when choosing accommodations. Safe travels to one and all. God bless you, Jason, and may God bless the Republic!

My husband and I actually prefer AirBNBs over hotels. We really do enjoy them and we have probably stayed in over 20 throughout Utah and Colorado over the last couple of years. There was only one that did feel kinda sketchy when we drove from Utah to North Carolina and back where the neighborhood didn’t feel great but the home was secure. We’ll definitely do a Google Map view of the neighborhood the next time. We always stay with SUPER HOSTS and read the reviews. Great video!!!

AirBnBs (and similar) are too much of a hassle. Security concerns, requirements to clean the place and do the laundry, etc. With the various add-on fees they're increasingly becoming just as expensive or even more than a hotel. No thanks. If I can't afford a hotel I'll delay my vacation until I can.

Those angles on that door to the kitchen are upside down, lets the food smoke out the way those are angled. Door’s probably backwards.
    Or upside down.

I really did not feel safe with those number locks when I was in airbnbs in Tampa, Orlando and Miami. Even though it were good neighbourhoods, such code locks just dont feel safe unless you change the code yourself so you are truly the only person who knows it.
