i played tekken 2 over at my cousins house when i was really young. they would beat me over and over again and not tell me how to do any of the cool moves they were doing. years later i forget about the game but then come across tekken 5. i bought it with my allowance and became obsessed. the last time i played against my cousins was with tekken 6 and they couldnt get a round off me. sweet redemption.
tekken 5 has a special place in my heart. it started my love for fighting games.

as someone that was a longtime tekken fan, i got into tekken competitively at T7 and “got good” but in that time i almost stopped caring about the visual aesthetic, the music, and everything that got me into it as a kid during the early 2000s. you reminded me what got me into this series and why i even decided to get good in the first place. tekken was just so cool man

I remember when my local arcade got a brand new Vanilla Tekken 5 cabinet on release. Playing a fighting game in arcades in anticipation to it's console port is an experience that I actually kinda miss now. It was definitely an attempt at a "return to form" for the series. I never really played Dark Resurrection much but it was a much needed patch. Vanilla 5 was broken beyond belief though. The PS2 port had SO MUCH content too. Replayability was insane.

Tekken 4 and 5 are my favourite Tekken games of the Franchise. ☯️ By the way Tekken 4 had the best story and atmosphere no doubt. Also my favourite Tekken Intros of the series are 4 and 5. Especially Tekken 4, developers did a lot of things incredibly right, most storylines were incredibly cool and the atmosphere and seriousness was just on a another level. I don't think most would disagree that Tekken 4 had a great"everything-except-the-fighting" to it. Great and Epic soundtracks, unique character designs, good individual stories, and an interesting main Mishima arc revival. The thing is that it's still a fighting game and no matter how great everything else is, if the fighting bit is flawed it'll overshadow the positives. Tekken 4 is sourly the most unique and underrated (mostly because of the choices that hindered the competitive scene) but it is my favorite Tekken to date, because of the very seriousness Vibes of the Story aspects perspective. The seriousness atmosphere of Tekken 4 it's on another level in my opinion. The soundtrack is what gets me the most next to the game's atmosphere. With soundtracks like: Fetus(Prologue), Authentic Sky, Unihabited(Mall Area) Didgerhythm(Jungle Area) Touch and Go(Airport Area) and Kitsch(Beach Area) and The Inner Shrine(Hon-Maru Temple) and others soundtracks, For me Tekken 4 remains even in these days the most Unique Tekken game of the series. ☯️ 🤷🏻‍♂️

Tag 1 and 4 are still my favorites. 5 had almost all my favorite characters butt the graphics were less nice then Tag 1 and 4.
The character designs started to become less cool then ever before. The stages and music started to become less cool. So it was the first Tekken for me that didn't become a better/ cooler game than the ones before. For me they became better from 1 tot 4. Now we have 8 and besides the graphics everything went to shit.

I can definitely appreciate what they tried to do with Tekken 4, and it still stands up there as one of my favorite titles in the series along with Tekken 5. T5 was the last game in the franchise that felt like "pure Tekken" to me before they really crossed over into the overload area of the series: More characters, more combos, more flash........stuff that took away from the essence of what Tekken was, and you could definitely feel it looking at both T5 and T6 side by side.

7 onwards I really don’t miss with inclusions like Akuma, Celum , Negan And others . They made akuma canon and he isn’t even mentioned in 8 I believe . These guest characters only appeal to fans of those franchises . No other . Any guy who has played Paul, Jin Law Feng Steve King etc and is not a Final Fantasy fan will always view them as cheap cash grab strategies to disregard the characters they love for these guests . Final Fantasy characters are just not Tekken like characters. They have these long range teleportation and weapons appearing out of nowhere . I am a DMC fan but I’ll never say Dante should appear in Tekken , in a non canon spinoff , maybe , but never a canon game. Dante simply isn’t for tekken with all his weapons and styles. Even if they go for guest , even though there is no need for that, they should go for characters whose main focus is hand to hand combat like Yakuza characters, or those from Virtua Fighter . Not those game breakers like projectile spammers like Akuma or these final fantasy guys .

I disagree (respectfully), with most players, with Harada (who is not the father of Tekken) and with this material at many points.
'The Devil Within' mode is a great metaphor for the direction this series took. They seriously thought they were doing something better than T4 Force Mode.
More is not always better, not in every game genre. The only exception I see are racing games, maybe open world titles sometimes, but not always.
Most often "more" means: clumsier, less interesting, with decreased quality. This is what happened to Tekken 5, and even more so to its successors (led us to the Negans, Noctis, Lucky Chloes, Gigas, and more...). Almost all players who played the most Tekken 2 and 3 understand this.
The overload of characters in Tekken bothers me to this day. Less attention was paid to character development or animation, general design and motion capture than even in (the best iteration in the series) Tekken 3.
The music in Tekken 5 is generic and could fit into any arcade game, the graphics (most importantly: art direction) are weaker, costumes are not so good, some attacks looks dumb, the arenas are incosistent to the feel of the whole.
Tekken 5 saved sales, but in the long term probably killed the series. It was necessary to develop creatively what Tekken 3 and 4 started, we would have a truly next-gen Tekken without these absurd flashes and cheap effects.
Not everything went wrong (Asuka! Feng!, Dragunov! Intro!), and, of course I like Tekken 5 (because it's still Tekken), I only think that this game just not as good as everyone thinks ;) The tournament "scene" has no meaning or sense for me. I have my own opinion and feelings, sorry for writing so much.
    Merry Christmas!
Post Scriptum: Beak Doo San is probably the worst character redesign in fighting game history, it gets boring after a few minutes of playing...

    • @shadosassins
      @shadosassins  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I understand. I agree that Tekken 5 started the current direction of the series, I just personally feel like Tekken 6 is more guilty of these issues than Tekken 5. My hope was that Namco would find a balance between T4 and T5 and instead they did whatever T6, TT2, and T7 were. Character designs in 5 weren't as bad as they were in 6 and whatever 7 was.
Thanks for sharing. And Merry Christmas to you too.

Even though I love and have a soft spot for Tekken 5, I definitely see what you mean. T5 really kicked off some of the "bloat" and anime cheesiness (and I say this as an anime fan) that the later titles would double down on, although I feel like it had a pretty good balance of it. Like, despite all of that it still felt "Tekken-ish", if that makes any sense? Lol but I will say I do miss the gritty yet ethereal martial arts movie vibe of the early Tekkens and they definitely need to go back to that.
