This is called the "not decent map effect". Don't feel embarrassed, it's normal. Seriously, they could at least put a compass in the game as an item like in The Forest.
My first successful playthrough (currently ongoing), I spawned in Pleasant Valley. It took me 50 days to discover the route up to the coal mine, and into Coastal Highway. I've since made CH my *main* base, with a couple regional outposts in ML, TM and of course PV. In that span of time, I have mapped out (just about) every single corner of Pleasant Valley, yet TO THIS DAY, have not found the connection TO Mystery Lake. That will change today! Haha. Day 180. Thanks man, this helped. Was coming from the fishing hut on the pond, but kept getting caught up on false paths to the cave I was looking for. Was in PV for so long I'd forgotten what landmarks to look for to find the right ledge to the cave.
I came in PV during foggy weather and had forgotten my bedroll in winding river. I walked in front of that tree 3 times and couldn't find that cave!! I had even made an arrow in sticks near the bridge with the exact direction I came from and still couldn't find it! This video saved my run (my previous run also went to hell after I forgot my bedroll somewhere...)
Ohhhhh that's how u got back in, im based in the trapper cabin and was using the guest center as a store house, but I wanted to move out to pleasant Valley bc of the huge farm house and game out there

i stared right at that spot, didn't even notice the window was a path. I told myself I would only look up how to get back to Mystery Lake after I figured it out, however I took a very long path around 5 IRL days later through Coastal Highway O.o
I know what you mean! I was trying to do the Nomad achievement a few weeks back, and twice in a row I got killed by an endless blizzard! Far worse than wolves....
I literally died the the other night because I did not look up for that window! lol... I camped out on the balconies for 1 night and 1 blizzard, then moved onto pleasant valley to head down the long curve and die! lol
Man I am in the same situation , from the carter hydro dam i go down to the lake through the caves in pleasant valley , found the car on the long curve , gone deep in the forest , found a destroyed house with a dead man there , and settle down befor blizzard and dark comming , 1 step for death I can say....too bad for me cuz I didnt check the broken window from the beginning ....I just hope I can make it back , I dont have left many resources .....But it maked a nice story tho...I am new and noob at this game tho but the last update make him very good to play .
I'm pretty sure this isn't where the cave takes you now (from mystery lake). I went there by mistake and now that i'm thinking of how to map my way back i'm like wtf!? i guess i'll have to look at my recordings.
+OlafurArons I haven't traveled between areas in a while, but it isn't like Hitherland to make major changes to already existing areas, so I'm not sure.
