I've just seen someone play The Last Post on a Bugle for Armistice day here in the UK. I couldn't figure out how he was changing the notes. Now I know! Great video that explains all you need to know about playing the Bugle. Steve a clearly a wonderful natural teacher.
I currently live in Japan where I bought a bugle at a flea market. I looked online for a video to learn and play, and you wouldn't believe my surprise when I found out you're from New Milford too!! I grew up 18 years there!! What a crazy small world!! Instant like and subscribe!
Ok, confession: Im 33 years old and heard some awesome military bugle calls, like what you played. And now here I am, deeply contemplating if I want to invest the effort to commit to learn this instrument. I really like its simplicity. Great video Sir.

Every time I'm in the room where my Grandsons Trombone is, I pick it up and see how much racket I can make on it. If I make it another few months, I'll be 70. I'M HAVING A BLAST !!!

I was a guitarist, but using my hands as a machinist and as an electrician, too, gave me Carpal Tunnel really bad. I played relief in whichever band was playing where I would be at a dance hall. (If one of the band members needed a break or a bathroom run, They would call me to the stage and I would fill in till that person got back.) The pain got so bad I couldn't maintain a grasp on my guitar. I had the surgery on both wrists and now, I can no longer even play my guitars. It's a bummer. I'm retired disabled. I love to play music. I figured I'd learn horn. I love big band stuff, so it gives me something to strive for.
It’s March 2nd, just received my bugle - Australia - and It’s ANZAC Day on the 25th April. I hope to be able to play the Last Post at dawn, followed by Reveille at the end of my driveway. Haven’t a musical bone in my body.
The nice thing about a bugle, is that in my experience, it is one of the easier instruments to learn. Work hard, and I'm sure you'll be able to play those calls.
You’d be a good teacher I’m sure. Thank you. I’m thinking of playing for my fellow soldiers who served, past and want live taps vice a recording. I believe they earned that. I’ve been toying with this idea for many years and haven’t pulled the trigger. Words of encouragement anyone?
Ok, after years of thinking about, contemplating what ifs, yadda yadda yadda, i pick up and listen to a CD of Enrico Morricone today at work. That brass triggered me. I'm humming and whistling away, and I walk into a thrift store at lunch, and there is the $20 bugle calling me. It's a done deal, and I'm down the path made of brass. Added coincidence, a new song by Foxy Shazam dropped today. Some great trumpet at times there by Alex Nauth. So between Alex and Enrico I'm trumpet bound. I'm glad to befinally heading down this rabbit hole. Will be watching more of your vids too. Cheers for the uploads and lessons.🤘😝🤘
For anyone wanting to play taps, especially at Military Funeral Honors, please learn to play it the correct way which is NOT the way you normally hear it on TV and in movies. Notes 7,8,9 and 10,11,12 and 13,14,15 are to be played as straight eighth notes. NOT the dotted eighth and sixteenth you often hear. You can find sheet music online that shows both. The best place to learn about the history of taps and how to play it is at www.tapsbugler.com . If you listen to most services with a military bugler (such as for John F. Kennedy's service) you will hear it played correctly. And that is how all of the branches of the U.S. military play it EXCEPT the Marines. The Marines use the dotted eighth and sixteenth note for some reason (and will argue there are TWO "correct" ways). The electronic "ceremonial bugle" that is often used today, and authorized by the Department of Defense, has the correct straight eighth notes. If you want to provide the service of playing live taps at Military Honors Funerals or sometimes other activities, you can consider joining a group like Bugles Across America at www.buglesacrossamerica.org . We try to help provide live buglers to services because the military simply doesn't have nearly enough of their own.
The incorrect playing of the eighth notes is a pet peeve of mine. I have a video where I teach "Taps". th-cam.com/video/tRQ2RjZaYfo/w-d-xo.html It teaches the correct way to play those straight eighths.
@@StevetheMusician I checked out your video. Very good. Sometimes you see strange playings of it and one example that was on the Bugles Across America site (and shouldn't have been there) had somebody holding the last note so long that they would almost have had to do circular breathing to do it. And I just heard another with two of the bars in question had the dotted eighth and sixteenth, and the third had straight eights but at extremely slowed down for drama. It actually sounded nice, but not correct. For me, I try to "stick to the script" but play with an extremely clean tone, some drama, and some, not too much, vibrato. And I use a bugle and never a trumpet. I do use the trumpet for other things such as playing a service hymn of the family wants that. Or at something like a Veterans Day Kiwanis luncheons playing the service songs. (Incidentally, I'm about to add the service song for the Merchant Marines to my medley. They had a little something to do with winning WWII, and had a LOT of losses.) I'll put a comment at your other video just to underscore those particular notes in Taps.
Because of my autism I can teach myself how to play a song on a musical instrument, sometimes I do not like having autism because I am bullied a lot, but sometimes I can use it as an advantage as well when it comes to music.
Ay man you are doing it wrong to not get bullied is to be well known with the grade above you and just have a play with them I have Austim and they love it
When you mentioned about people who bash the mouthpiece into the Bugle with their hand, it not only jams the mouthpiece into the Bugle, but it can also split the tubing of the instrument and take it out of its natural key

So, I just bought a Bugle not knowing that it's limited to 5 notes only. Damn, good thing I bought a cheap one that's made of plastic. I was expected that I could play different notes with my mouth and thought I was failing to do so. But it was the instrument.

I just picked up an 11" bugle at The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA. The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to play the mid-range notes. I know that a bugle can't play every note. But, it seems to want to jump in sevenths or something instead of in thirds. So, though I can match your first note of reveille, I can't match your second note. Instead, it wants to jump from your first reveille note to your third reveille note, skipping over the in-between note. Any tips on how to play all the standard notes for a bugle?
Been wanting to get into brass after percussion sucked (didn't work for me). I have a temporary job at a goodwill, and they where about to throw away a bugle, and I got it for free! (It's old for sure, but it's nice). Anywho, this should help get me into brass before I decide to buy a trumpet or trombone or something, thanks!
Is the bugle still tge same if it only has one loop instead of two also when i gat the bugle it didnt say anything about being tuned can i still play it
The bugle in the video has J. S. Regulation Made in USA written on the bell. That's the only identification I can find. The true secret is in the mouthpiece. I used my Stork Vacchiano 3C trumpet mouthpiece. The same one I use for my Bb and C trumpets. The tone is significantly worse if I use the unlabeled mouthpiece it came with. Thanks for watching. I will be uploading more bugle videos beginning this week.

I wish I still had my bugle. I wanted one as a kid so I could play the reveille 😂 I never got around to playing it because I had no one to teach me.
That's great...love it.
I am finding it hard to change my embouchure between low note and high note. 💔
Poh Yoke Lo, check out the exercises I've been putting out this week in celebration of 100 subscribers. They should help.

Where can I get a bugle
Omg, you deserve more subs
Thank you so much!
It’s him. _The bugle boy._
Can i ask a question?, Do you have a bugle and the brand of the bugle is Standard Reculation 1287/1187?
I don't know that precise bugle. The one I play in the videos has J. (Possibly a worn off U.) S. Regulation Made in USA (The A is worn off.) stamped into the bell.
Thanks sir, I'm looking forward to that bugle that you're using hihiji
Can i get one free? ♥️
One of mine was free. They’re out there. You might try your local “Buy Nothing” page on facebook.
So are the notes on bugle the same or similar to play as open notes on trumpet?
Most bugles are the same as a Bb (the most popular) trumpet with valves one and two down.
I’m planning a whole series on the bugle for the future.

Steve the Musician Thank you!

I found a vintage one at goodwill for four dollars! I just don't know how to play it
Some one told me that the bugle is the hardest wind instrument, how true is this?
The french horn is the hardest wind instrument I have played. The bugle isn't that tough in comparison.
It's a great first instrument.
1000 subscribers good 👍 job
good content man
Thanks!
Hi I’m trying to learn but I really can’t get the high notes
This is really simple, but i need to practice buzzing my lips :)
I have a number of other videos if you are interested. A good place to start is with the Bugle Exercises playlist.
I'm trying to learn this so I can play the last post for my remembrance service next year
Hey man, can i buy that bugle? It looks good..
It does play well. It's my son's, so I can't sell it. It's actually just a cheap flea market type. The secret sauce it practice and a decent mouth piece. I use a Stork Vacchiano 3C trumpet mouth piece.
Can you play Industry Baby?
I always have loved playing tuba but it is incredibly detrimental to learning a high brass instrument 🙃
IKR THE MOUTHPIECE IS SO SMALL!
My bugled doesn't sound like yours mine sounds like it's clogged up
Great vdo!
