I repared my cracked pressure reservoir on the soft close device the other week. A new one was $55 on eBay. However apparently I failed to reattach one of the cables, so the trunk wouldnt unlock. I fixed that today, partially thanks to your instructions. Thanks! SL500.
Ok.... so all the people here thanking you and praising you for making this Video.... IT GOS TRIPLE FOR ME!!!! Just did this to my Sl500 and as of now it’s working like a charm!! Thanks again!!!!
I just did this on my SL500 and it seems to have worked! So happy to save a few hundred bucks and to have a DIY success. Thanks for the great instructions and video!
Thanks a lot for the video. It helped me fixing my trunk problem. I don't know if we had the same problem, but gluing the lock mechanism alone also didn't fix it for me (just like your case). I noticed that my trunk would lock properly if I had the engine running. So, logically the locking mechanism must have been good. The problem was with the electronics of the PSE pump. I unplugged its fuse for 30 seconds, and that fixed the problem. Since you mentioned you had to disconnect the battery, I have a suspicion that we had a similar problem.
Thank you for you comment. I just learned something about mysterious electrical problems. 2 years after this repair, the trunk would not open electrically, or soft close. The wipers occasionally would not park when in automatic, the mirrors would not fold when locked for parking. Turned out to be the battery, even thought the battery tested ok, I noticed that the voltage reported on the console (key on, not running, & press reset button rapidly three times) was only 11.7. So if you battery is near the end which is 5 years max anymore, replace it.
David Prokity Yes, low battery voltage can wreak havoc to this car. Many things, such as the sunroof, need calibration after disconnecting the battery.
Not to mention resetting computer memory which is automatic but takes about 50 miles of driving.... Aside from that, besides what you mention, there's really only the windows that need resetting.
thank you for the help! I had the same issue. HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!! That was the key for this repair. Found a 2002 at pick and pull for $17! was not cracked.
excellent video, i did this fix to my S430, thank you for posting this! I used jb weld on the cracks, All of my ball bearing check valves were cracked.
I was pretty sure I didn't have leaks I have other leaks two of my soft close doors but mine turned off idk why I reconnected the battery because your video started working again I keep forgetting about that ty I'll have to keep an eye on it off it turns off again I'll make the same repairs
Is that actuator also the device that holds the reservoir for the hydraulic fluid replacement? I’m looking for that reservoir to replace the fluid but can’t find where it sits!
Thank you for asking. This is a pneumatic system and a vacuum actuates the mechanism such that negative air pressure provides the power. A liquid is not used for trunk assist. I hope this helps. Sometimes diagnostics is free or a small shop time fee is charged and you can be a little more certain as to the problem you are having.
The balbearing plug is ovbiously not a good design as over time the plastic surrounding it splits. Epoxy did the trick. If you do one balbearing end at a time when the epoxy is most runny you can cover the entire tip, balbearing included, and keep rotating the whole assembly to get a nice clean finish. One additional tip: If, after the repair, you get the whole assembly back in, and it's still not doing the soft close, you may need to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for 2-3 seconds to do a reset. I saw this in another post and that did the final trick!
Is the door lock and trunk pump in the same circuit. I have a fuse that is shorted out and the trunk release button and door lock does not operate inside or with a remote key.
Thnx for this valuable video. i think there is a delay for the retractable trunk lid grip to go back in, which means you still have a leak . my w140 gut sucked in no time after closing the trunk. but even though, am getting a warning when scaning with star diagnosisfor the lid grip air demand too high which is not good for the pump. hope to fix soon. goodluck
Thank you for your comments. Guess what I am doing today, repairing the Driver's side door soft close. I am doing a video on installing the repair part; $80 from ebay verses $430 - $650 to replace the whole door lock assembly. I have read on the boards that the time cycle should be less. All of my doors hold for a very long time which means the pump is running but I cannot find anything wrong. The driver's door is isolated by the system identifying the leak there and I still get the long run time on all of the other doors and trunk. If there is a leak elsewhere, I hope find it before the pump goes out. And hope against all hope the front door repair fixes everything.
Great tutorial on how to fix it David Prokity. I was able to epoxy the cracks on mine. Now the issue I have is that the retractable hanlde comes out when I close the trunk for few seconds then goes back in. Instead of coming out when you open trunk and then go back in when you close it. I'm not sure whats the issues but maybe you can help?
thnx for this ,helps alot ! ..quicl quesiton im looking to replace the trunk light plates for my s class 2004 ,do i just unplug the two plugs?? and then try to pry out or are there any other screws?? that i cant seem to see
+David Prokity i did them ,what i had to do was remove trunk liner (except the plastic piece where the latch stuff are at ) ,i disconnected the emergency release wire, and the rest was just reaching to where the trunk light harness is at and disconnect then push the 2 side tabs that are on the trunk light plate, aside from that the center insert on the trunk i had to use the plastic wedge to pry out the sides ,and there is one built in screw attached that i need to unbolt to completely remove the insert i kept trying to remove until i notcied it,its a 8mm thats behind the license plate but its inside the inner trunk (the 8mm)
Thank you for asking. Wow, it's been 2 years and this repair is still holding up. This fixed my Trunk but I just lost my Driver's Side Front Door. Tried to repair that but failed almost immediately, Looks like I will have to pony up the cash to purchase a replacement door lock assembly.
How do you fix a trunk that slams shut when pressing the automatic red button to close. When I press the button when the trunk is open it slams down hard. How can I adjust that if possible. I have a 09 cls550.
I am having issue with mines it closes and open fine. The only problem is the lamp green switch inside is not working it keeps flashing. Wondering why?
the noise come from the hydraulic trunk closing assist pump. is right next the battery. the motor keep running after the lid close. can that be repair thx again
jordan valderrama I think that the handle did not extend to begin with. I remember noticing that the trunk would not pull itself closed. I do not remember the handle functioning at all.

@@A_Renaissance_Man can that cause the battery to die???

Great fix :) I know the W220 is a more technically involved platform than the W140 but you make owning one look easy. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, your videos are very very helpful I hope you keep posting.
Cool repair..but why hide the plate when you drive around with it behind you ll day?

This video my actual help me. Thank. 👍🏿
How do you get a 2006 R350 trunk that has a soft close feature to stay up. rear struts have been replaced on both sides
I suggest buying a couple of those plastic rivet clips in advance in case you happen to break them anyway. They get fragile with age and heat.
thnx for this ,helps alot ! ..quicl quesiton im looking to replace the trunk light plates for my s class 2004 ,do i just unplug the two plugs?? and then try to pry out or are there any other screws?? that i cant seem to see
No screws, the just pry out. Use a door panel wedge to separate the light housing from the panel.

Can this cause the battery light to come on??
I would not think so. This is a pneumatic issue not an electrical issue.
@@A_Renaissance_Man that clicking noise I hear it in the trunk and it’s non stop until I turn the car off
Is it supposed to take that much time before the handle goes back in?
yes. 5-7 sec.

Nice video David. Was your PSE running abnormally long when you had those leaks?
No. The soft close was not working and the trunk had to be closed like all like all other cars.
well done, thanks
you got a video ,picture of what powers lower latch I think I'm missing a module lower latch soft close feature not working
Good Morning; The only thing I have found wrong with the soft close is what I described in the video. Leaks from cracks in the plastic.
What the part number PLEASE???
If you had your hand where the handle pulls in, would it have enough pressure to pinch your hand lol?
i did seal the actuator then after the close down the sound of the motor still on
My motor runs for a long time before the handle is pulled in. I have been told that could be indicative of a leak elsewhere.
thx i will check it again any other leak from.
the noise come from the hydraulic trunk closing assist pump. is right next the battery. the motor keep running after the lid close. can that be repair thx again
When it wasnt working was the latch stuck out?
