Fantastic era for the Colts.....fun and exciting....just could not get over the Steelers/Raiders standing in their way. I always enjoyed them and the 1974-1977 Cardinals who similarly had the Cowboys and the NFC regulars stamping out dreams of a Super Bowl.
I’m now 60 and remember when 📺👀 it was fantastic 🏈even though I loved the snakebit Vikes 💔 it was a wonderful time to have been young during those times ✨✨✨

Brought back a lot of great (and some painful) childhood memories. Cannot believe those teams went 0-3 in the playoffs. I remember so looking forward to Saturdays when "This is the NFL" would come on and Sundays for those 2:00 p.m. games at old Memorial Stadium. My gosh, Jones to Carr, especially in '76, was a good a deep-ball combination as I can remember. The '76 playoff loss to the Steelers was stunning - that was the year they could have gone all the way. And, the crazy '77 2OT loss to the Raiders - which was blacked out locally and I had to listen to on radio - ended that great run. It all came apart in '78 when Jones got hurt in preseason, which marked the beginning of the end of the Colts in Baltimore.
That sums it up quite well. I'd also have to add Irsay started trading away talented offensive and defensive veterans instead of paying them. The '77 season was basically the end of Baltimore Colts
I think the 1977 was the best they had because the defense was better. The issue was the injury to Roger Carr. If he is healthy they defeat Oakland. The Raiders had no one at that point who had the speed to cover Carr.

But the offenses ruled the second half in a back and forth contest. I wish the Colts could've taken more time off the clock on their final scoring drive in the 4th quarter. Probably wouldn't have made a difference. "The Ghost to the Post" from the Snake to Casper was one of the top clutch plays in NFL playoff history. How do you think the Colts would've fared against Denver? Orange Crush defense gave the Colts fits in the regular season game from what I remember.

Marchabroda was a horrible coach with a very talented team. Decent coaching would have gotten to the SB. His game plan was not to lose the game instead of winning the game

I watched this game when I was a kid & watched Bert Jones throw the ball at least 70 yards in the air to Roger Carr and still to this day the longest pass & catch I've ever seen!

Bert was the best QB in the NFL during those seasons (1975-77)--he really was the "original" John Elway (as another post so accurately phrased it.) The Colts had a very good team--but their Achilles heel was a weak secondary. They had a great pass rush which could cover up the flaws on the back-end against lesser opponents--but when they had to face high-powered passing attacks like the Steelers and Raiders the defense got smoked!! They could never advance beyond the 1st round in the postseason--and their leaky pass coverage was the main reason.
Agree with everything you wrote, but I do believe it could have held up in 1977 if Roger Carr had been healthy. Oakland had no one at that point who could have matched up with Carr. I really believe they are playing Dallas in SBXII if Carr is healthy.

That being said the Colts still put up 31 points against the Raiders in the 77 playoff. Two TD's were via interception and kickoff return, but no matter how the points got on the board 31 should be enough to win regardless. Oakland put up 37--and anytime Stabler needed to make a clutch pass he was able to do so. A classic case of the Colt secondary not able to make plays against teams with great passing games.
@@nyterpfan Lyle Blackwood was injured earlier in the game & he would have been on Casper on that play. His inexperienced back-up screwed up. Oakland knew he was in the game and attacked the weakness. The Colts were out-coached as Marchibroda admittedly sat on the ball after they took the lead.
If Bert Jones didn't take a weekly beating he could have played 15 full seasons at QB instead of just 5 (and won 3 or 4 MVPs instead of of just the one). Look it up.
He played 10, but it seemed like 5 since he only played in 3 or 4 during years 6 & 7. Years 8 & 9 were pretty good, but he didn't do much in year 10 with the Rams.

If we could combine the best coaches, quarterback, receivers of all eras, I would take Bert Jones over Peyton Manning. Only Baltimore Colts fans who were there what understand this.

I was too young to remember these glory years but it appears as if the defense (in 1977) was beginning to fall apart, giving up big plays and loads of points. Perhaps someone else with more personal knowledge could break it down more appropriately (?).
The 1977 team was the best of that era...if Roger Carr was healthy they probably represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. It was also the best defense they had over that three year period. A much better secondary over 75 & 76. Special teams were not very good & cost them in Week's 13 & 14 & the Raiders playoff game.

I was too young to remember these glory years but it appears as if the defense (in 1977) was beginning to fall apart, giving up big plays and loads of points.
Perhaps someone else with more personal knowledge could break it down more appropriately (?).
The 1977 team was the best of that era...if Roger Carr was healthy they probably represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. It was also the best defense they had over that three year period. A much better secondary over 75 & 76. Special teams were not very good & cost them in Week's 13 & 14 & the Raiders playoff game.
