  • These 2 tenses work perfectly together to create natural sentences that describe sequences of events in the past in the best possible way. You should try to use at least one Past Perfect sentence in your IELTS essay.

    thank you,
I had these doubt between past continuous and past perfect continuous
1a) He went through her phone and found out she'd been lying to him all the time.
1b) He went through her phone and found out she was lying to him all the time.
2a) My friend asked me to watch that film and made me realize what I'd been missing.
2b) My friend asked me to watch that film and made me realize what I was missing.
What's the difference here and what's more correct and natural?

The Past Perfect is used to describe the order of the different actions. That's why it is always Simple Past + Past Perfect. One thing happened before another thing, so use this structure to organise the events into a logical order.
I saw the movie and afterwards I realised what I had been missing.
Using Past Continuous, you are describing 2 events concurrently.
While I am watching the movie I am also realising what I am missing at the same time.
Both are correct and your choice will depend on whether you want to describe 2 concurrent actions or 1 action after another action.
      Does that help?

Respected sir, you are earnestly entreated to solve the following grammatical issue -The passengers of the train were sleeping/had been sleeping when the accident happened.

Hi @sanjibganguli3084 Which do you think is the best tense to use?
Past continuous or Past Perfect Continuous?

Both are correct, but the nuances that they try explain are pretty intricate. If u use past continuous, both Accident & Sleeping occur simultaneously. This might imply that they might have been hit by other car. Whereas if u use past perfect continuous you are providing reason why accident occurred... Because they had been sleeping for long time, this one imply that they themselves hit the vehicle in the median or someone else car🎉
