- Decks are used for many family and social activities. A deck that is attached to a home can threaten the home if ignited by the wildfire. Once ignited, a burning deck can threaten your home by breaking glass in window or sliding glass doors, igniting your siding and burning into house, and by flames spreading vertically and laterally up the siding into the area under the eave and entering the attic.
Minimizing the chance that a deck will ignite, and if it should it ignite, minimizing the chance that fire can spread to your home is an important part of hardening your home against wildfire. In this video how your deck can be ignited during a wildfire will be reviewed, as will actions you can take to make your new or existing deck less vulnerable.

This is a great series of videos, and you make a lot of great points in this one.
But for those of us who already have substantial wood decks, wood ceilings on our patios, or just, like most houses, wood eaves, after taking all of your other recommendations, I would sure like to know if there were any coatings that would help make our decks, patios or eaves less prone to ignition? Even if they have to be reapplied every year etc.
Great summary about vulnerability of decks. Thanks
Greatest information thanks.
You can get aluminium decking products with aluminium extrusions or porcelain tiles that look like natural wood.
100% fireproof and they last basically forever with no maintenance required.
We’re glad you found it helpful!
Useful information.
Thank you!
Hi! We are writing an article about this for our local paper? Would you be able to offer us the picture you have of a deck on fire for use?
Hi! Yes, we would be happy to help. Please send us an email at info@firesafemarin.org
