    Great moment when Spielberg presented the award for Best Director. I feel like he was at a similar point in his career to Nolan is now when he finally won, heck, both for partly black and white WW2 biopics with run times over three hours AND both R-rated after having been really successful in the industry for about two decades.

    After I saw "Poor Things," I was thinking that Bella Baxter is my favorite female character of all time. My favorite male character for a long time now has been George Bailey from "It's a Wonderful Life" cause his frustration over having to give up his dreams due to family obligations and other responsibilities is so relatable. And yesterday during the Oscars I realized that Bella was living George's dream in a way he'd never been allowed to. Both of them find their place in the world during their respective journeys. I'm sure there can be a fair amount of analysis done comparing those two characters.

    I haven't seen Poor Things or KOTFM but I think people went with their hearts in wanting Lily to win. Yes she won SAG but this is the first time in a while that it didn't match the Oscars. I hope the nomination at least gets Lily more chances to be in this position again. It's very difficult for POC actresses to get lead nominations even though many considered this as a supporting performance.

    I never switched to Lilly Gladstone. People tend to be reactionary, and forget The Academy seldom cares about narrative and will choose whichever they think is the performance of the year. Coleman vs Close, Chadwick vs Hopkins. The Bafta snub for Gladstone and the lack of passion for Killers was the hint. Btw, Brian congrats on predicting Emma. Tons of TH-camrs picked Lilly.

    I am Japanese 日本人です
    We celebrate 2 wins for the first time in 15 years (since "Departures" and "The House of Small Cubes" in 2008)
    Most of you must be wondering why "Godzilla Minus One" was not the Japanese submition of International film.
    "Godzilla Minus One" was not that successful in Japan for a Godzilla film, and director Takashi Yamazaki is like Japanese Michael Bay, who started his career as a VFX guy. On the other hand, everyone thought famous Wim Wender's film was more Oscar-like especially after it won Cannes for the best actor.
    This is why it was a huge surprise that "Godzilla Minus One" was very successful both commercially and critically overseas.
    At Japanese Academy awards of the last week, which nobody even in Japan cares, "Godzilla" sweeped 8 categories including the best picture, while "Perfect Days" got 2 wins for the best director and best actor.
    But it was of course too late for the Oscar international film.
    In Japan, every one predicted "Godzilla" and "The Boy and the Heron" win
    Producer Toshio Suzuki just revealed at a press conference that even though Hayao Miyazaki was pretending he did not care about the awards, he was waiting at his atelier the good news, Ghibli staff was watching the show and started to clap as soon as they heard the "The" of "The Boy and the Heron", And Suzuki ordered 3 Oscar statue for himself, Miyazaki, and to show off.
    Also, everyone, do not forget that today is March 11th, 13 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

      That’s an awesome write-up. Thank you for the insight.
      It’s funny imagining Miyazaki, who is generally thought of having a very restrained demeanor, sitting on the side of his chair in the expectation of the winner announcement.

      thanks for the very interesting information you brought up! how about Kore-eda's "Monster"? was it seen as a possible contender for Japan choice for best international feature? I think it would have been a strong contender for a nomination if it was picked. Great year for japanese cinema, by the way! You have at least 4 films that received international recognition last year! way to go! 👏👏👏

    • @rfrolicarts
      @rfrolicarts 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    • @davidbjacobs3598
      @davidbjacobs3598 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Japan truly had a stupendous year for film! I've yet to see Perfect Days and Monster, but I'm excited to.
      I will say, I think Japan made a solid and strategic pick with Perfect Days for International. I don't think Godzilla would've had as much a chance, even though it's one of my favorites of the year. The Academy doesn't often go for large scale action or horror movies, especially not in this category. Similarly, I don't think Boy and the Heron would've had a shot either -- even though it won Best Animated, it's not common for animated films to be nominated for International (I don't think it's EVER happened).
      Meanwhile, Perfect Days was very safe in its nomination, and probably ranked highly among the nominees. Wim Wenders is also a very respected director in the US. It didn't win, but none of these films had a chance at winning, not when one of the nominees was also up for Best Picture.

      I predicted her to win, but you never know. I remember a few years ago when the late Chadwick Boseman was favored to win, and the Academy decided to present Best Lead Actor right at the end instead of Best Picture, apparently thinking it would be a touching climax paying tribute to a beloved actor. Anthony Hopkins won instead and wasn't even present to accept his award, so the ceremony ended on an unexpectedly underwhelming moment. @@tashkenty The way the gracious Sacheen Littlefeather was treated aside, the liberal Hollywood community loves to show how progressive they are, at least when it comes to racial and gender identity. But as Ricky Gervais pointed out, they're pretty clueless when it comes to what's going on outside their bubble. Woody Harrelson and Susan Sarandon are better than most of them, but as we've seen during the past few months, the C.I.A. and Zionists have warped Hollywood's perception of the reality we live in. Lilly Gladstone would have been a shoe-in had she been nominated as a supporting actress. I really think that would have been a better category for her actual role in the film. I’m actually confused as to what the criteria is, but in my opinion, she didn’t carry the movie. She wasn’t even in the whole thing. It reminded me when Oprah was up for best actress in the color purple, and she should have been in as best supporting actress and I felt like her being in the mix interfered with Woopie Goldberg actually winning.

      Plus, the Academy invited so many Asian members, "The Boy and the Heron" got the higher Metascore, and more importantly, "Spiderman" got the next year to win, while this is the last chance to praise Miyazaki Hayao.

    I love your videos, but it's a no brainer you to make an essay about why Emma Stone ein this Oscar. As you did, I watched several final predictions and I was so happy that you were the only one who stuck to their guns and didn't get biased because of Lily's SAG Award. And as you did too, after Poor Things winning it's third Award, I started having a hunch about Emma getting it. BUT before that, my hunch was seeing Emma, sitting on the front row, while Lilly was on the second row. My theory was, "She's sitting there because it's gonna be easier ans faster for her to get on the stage, when her name is called. ", Yeah, stupid hunch.😂
    Thank you for making such superb videos!!! Saludos

    A Japanese Godzilla movie winning the Oscar for best visual effects is a surreal moment. The golden example of doing more with less, on top of it being a fantastic movie. Came a long way from the visual effects of some of the more rushed, low budget entries lol. Also as a fan, it feels really good it beat out Gareth Edwards' movle. Minus One's budget was around 70 million less and grossed more. His Godzilla movie was imo one of the most dull, flat and disappointing movies I've ever watched. One of the biggest examples of over bait and switching your audience.

    I'm gonna celebrate Da'Vine Joy Randolph's win by rewatching the High Fidelity series on Hulu. I know that show was a bit polarizing, but she was hilarious and the best thing about it. She was also the best thing about The Idol, but as a person who cares about her fellow humans, I would never tell anyone to watch that. Maybe someone cut together a clip highlight reel of her scenes on TH-cam or something. 😊 Anyway, congrats Da'Vine!

    I kind of wished they incorporated never-before-seen movie trailers, or upcoming movie announcements during the commercials (like the Superbowl), instead of just Rolex and car ads. Even those who aren't interested in the Oscars (the same way non-sports people aren't into the Superbowl), they'd at least stick around for newly released movie stuff.

    I predicted Lily because of SAG because the past 2 years SAG went 4/4. Not because of the "parallels." This is going to go down in history as one of the greatest acting wins. I would've loved for Lily to win because she was the only thing I liked about Killers of the Flower Moon but I think the Academy got this right. I would also attribute her win to the Academy growing with more international members. American stories don't resonate with international voters as much, whereas Emma's performance is more universal.
    I hope Lily gets the opportunities after this to be in another position to win.

    the academy has never taken the animated film category seriously. it's always been about the easy choice as opposed to evaluating and determining the deserving film. that's how we end up with a boy and the heron win because "might be miyazaki's last film" as opposed to spider-verse because "it's the better written film"

    When Poor Things won makeup/Hairstyle I knew Emma had it in the bag. The downfall was Lily should’ve ran supporting and I bet she’d a swept the season. KOTFM and Maestro got greedy and lost. Billie’s performance and win were the most underwhelming moments of the night: “I’m just Ken” shoulda won, as its a part of the movie and drives it forward. Kimmel was great.

    I was rooting for Lily Gladstone personally (and really deep down, Annette Bening) but I agree that this year felt so different than last, and ultimately predicted Emma Stone myself. Like you, after 'Poor Things' had won those three below the line categories, I also had some doubts that she'd win, because it really felt like, "are they REALLY going to shut out 'Killers?'" I also predicted Emma because I thought to myself I'd much rather predict her and be wrong, than predict Lily and be wrong. I'm glad I got it right! It does stink, though, that 'Killers' is now Martin Scorsese's third film to go 0-10 at the Oscars. And boy, do I REALLY hope Annette Bening and Lily Gladstone both get another chance. Also, VERY proud of fellow Hershey, PA native Da'Vine Joy Randolph!

    Thank you for comments regarding the 'In Memoriam' section. I thought it was incredibly disrespectful to the families of those whose lives the academy was supposedly celebrating to focus more on the entertainment than they did on the deceased. I kept yelling for a close-up that never came. Being older, I also depend on the close-ups to help me know who the person is. The way it happened, it was like a blur. Quite unfortunate. For me, the "I'm Just Ken' performance was the highlight of the entire night.

    The Zone of Interest winning sound was a foregone conclusion! That whole film is told through sound, its sound IS the movie. Brian - I agree with you the 2009 presentation of awards with past winners was way better than this year. I think in 2009 they chose actors that had some personal connection to the nominees, like they had starred in a film together in the past or they came up in the business together. This year's was missing something, but I still love the format of bringing back past winners.

Agree Stone’s performance was fabulous but I actually wanted Huller to win. She’s our next Blanchett in my opinion. A class above the others. Remember Huller spoke three languages in Anatomy of a Fall and she was extraordinary in Zone of Interest. Happy for Stone though - the winners felt right.
