    Nice dude, you explained the defrost timer operations in a quick and prompt way , this is exactly how we were taught the defrost timers worked in class

    Thank you, I'm a young buck about to finish my hvac associates degree and im so excited to work in the field. Even if I just do furnace installs on my first job I still wanna retain this information incase i go do commercial refrigeration at some point!

    these Paragon time clocks they are found in freestanding freezers, refrigerators, walk in coolers and Freezers and in older supermarket refrigeration units or rack systems up to the 1980s. as the newer rack systems will have a computer controlling all defrosts and other functions. but they are still available today on many equipment on True, Masterbilt, cases and Bohn Heatcraft single condensing units. common problems with these clocks the center knob if not tight and is subject to alot of vibration if on condensing units with Semi-Hermetic compressors the center knob, and the outer dial can fall off. if the time clock is mounted with the time pointer and swing arm down it may not put the equipment into defrost. i seen on some installations they mount the clock on the walls away from the compressor so the clock is isolated from vibration. other problems is after time the gears, the start pins can wear as i spray some lubricant on the gears to make the clock last longer. the contacts burnt if the connections are tight if its directly to a heater circuit. and certian times the timer motor can go bad meaning the equipment will be stuck in defrost or not go into defrost at all. as many replace the whole clock if it goes bad but they have the timer motor available for them. there is many models of these time clocks the ones for walk in coolers or refrigerated medium temperature cases will have a compressor off defrost meaning time initiated, time terminated. The low temperature walk in coolers and frozen food cases will have a time initiated, pressure or temperature terminated defrost. on these when the system goes into defrost on some walk in freezers and frozen food cases it will cut power to the refrigerant solenoid valve and will pump the system down to the reciever tank till the pressure control turns off the compressor via contactor, as well the defrost circuit on this clock controls the contactor coil for the defrost contactor for the defrost heaters in the case. as the contactors are for higher amperage heaters than the clock is rated. Smaller walk in coolers and cases it will be wired directly to the heaters on the coil. and has a defrost termination and fan delay switch if the temperature gets up in the case before the set time on the clock the switch will close and energize the coil behind the clock closing the solenoid valve, compressor contactor, as well killing the power to the defrost heaters and heater contactor. and resumes its normal refrigeration cycle. when the fan delay switch closes when the coil closes the evaporator fans will come on. Some of these Paragon clocks they been replaced by circuit board type clocks either Paragon or Grasslin, or a electronic time clock by Paragon or Grasslin. but most refrigeration techs use these Paragon time clocks the mechanical ones as they are reliable and have solid contacts. as previously Paragon was its own company then sometime it was a Subsidary of AMF American Machine Foundary, then Paragon Electric company. then its marketed by Invensys under Ranco North America. as i think Robartshaw owns the Paragon brand.

    He's not full of shit. In case anyone is wondering why you need a neutral, its not for the freezer itself, because the defrost heaters are almost always 208v-240v. It's for the motor that runs the clock of the timer. And the X that he's talking about is commonly known as a defrost termination switch.

    I have one of these installed in my garage to a dedicated outlet (8045-0) by the previous owner. I have no idea what he used it for other than maybe a timed outlet for the block heater in his car?
    He was an electrician and wired the house with scrap from jobsites. Every time I have to open up a wall I nearly have a heart attack I'm assuming he used this rather than spending $20.

    In a walk in refrigerator, are there systems that simply shut off the compressor long enough to defrost using the above freezing temperatures in the conditioned space to defrost the evaporator(s)?

    I'm in school and trying to wire up a walkin freezer. It's a 3 phase 360 volt unit. I cant get the compressor to start. How do I wire the thermostat? Do I wire it to the defrost timer or do I wire it to the 3 pole contactor? I wired it to the contactor built cant get the compressor to start still??

    • @miloscharmi
      @miloscharmi  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The compressor will be fed power strictly by the contractor. If your system will pump down via a liq. line solenoid, then that will be controlled by the tstat. The tstat will get feed power from the defrost control thru the normally closed contacts. then contactor will be controlled by a low pressure control. thus when tstat opens, unit pumps down, pressure control opens on low pressure de-energizing contactor. There are other ways to accomplish the system cycle, but this is a very common method. i hope that helps.

    I was reading 208v between N and 3, which means I'm in defrost, but at the same time I was reading 208v between N and X also while the freezer was still in defrost. Is that correct?
