How did the movie hit with the crowd in general? Was it like this stupid lie that The Last Jedi needs time to become just as much as a classic as Empire?

    • @MacMc691
      @MacMc691 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@kinghadbar The movie was well received from the fans, all three original movies were. Star Wars, better known as A New Hope now, was very well received, fans loved those first three movies, not much different than each generation that views them for the first time now. As mentioned above, it was a different time back then, we didn't have social media, we had magazines, newspapers, the small entertainment features on the nightly news and a show called Entertainment Tonight, which aired every day of the week, so we were very limited. If there was disdain out there regarding any one of those movies, I never saw it. Regarding ESB, people were on the fence whether to believe Vader was Luke's father and it was mostly people being in denial, myself included, there was no way in hell this dude is Luke's father. lol That was about the only negativity I can recall if you can call it that, it was more uncertainty than anything.
Regarding the TLJ, I'm as disappointed as any fan out there, that movie will never touch any of the first six movies. I was pretty happy when Disney bought the rights to SW because Lucas might have taken his franchise to the grave with him if not, but I'm not sure anyone could foresee what was going to happen. Like I tell some of my friends now, it's a coin flip when Disney releases anything Star Wars related if it's going to be good or not. Even the prequels, which weren't received as well as the originals, were better than this last trilogy. Disney completely ruined Luke, that was never his character, they fck'd him over, even Hamill didn't like what they did. That's a sore subject. lol I can understand killing off Solo, Ford wanted to be killed off back then too, so it made sense, but I think it's safe to say Luke is one of the biggest fan favorites of the entire franchise. They could have done so much with that character and I think that's exactly why Jon Favreau and the crew gave him what we all wanted, Luke at his apex, a big FU to Rian Johnson and Disney essentially. lol

36:11 - When Leia says "I love you" to Han, he was originally supposed to respond, "I love you too." Harrison Ford improvised, "I know." It went on to become an iconic line of his, and further defined his character in such a great way.

Irvin was a character director, so if he felt that it wasn't genuine, then he would do a retake of the scene. I forget how MANY takes were made for that one scene... but it was a lot. I think it was somewhere in the realm of 30? I'll have to look it up again.

Like I think he and George Lucas never reconciled and Prowse made a whole documentary flick about how dirty the whole deal was. @@robertlombardo8437And frankly, that's show biz. They looked at the dailies, heard that crap voice, and had Jones dub it. They're supposed to put this expensive production in jeopardy to appease his ego?
They could've sacked his ungrateful azz for that alone.
But, they didn't. They kept Prowse and he became World Famous as one of the most iconic characters and The Best Villain in movie history.
If he was so butt hurt about it, he should have quit. But, as we see, Prowse sticks around for all the movies and projects attached to Vader.
On top of that, Lucas let a Lot of his bad mouthing slide until it couldn't be ignored anymore.
Prowse was mad because he wasn't invited to the SW Celebrations and other conversations. So, he would hire people to go into the cons/Celebrations to pass out flyers telling people he would be at a nearby hotel signing merch... For a huge fee.
I love Vader and Prowse did a great job as the character. But, Prowse was a backstabbing hypocrite at that point

When these movies came out, Darth Vader being Luke's Father was a huge secret. In fact when they were filming the scene only 3 people knew it. James Earl Jones and only when he goe the Script, Mark Hamil who plays Luke on the day of filming the reveal. And George Lucas who wrote the script. Everyone else had an alternate script. Even the actor in Vaders suit did not know. It was a massive reveal and plot twist that stunned audiences. Now the line and reveal is iconic over 40 years later. Now Boba Fett was so cool you couldn't just buy his action figure when it first came out, you had to buy three other figures or toys and Mail in the 3 UPC symbols from the back of the packages with $15 and then he would arrive Special Delivery in about three weeks. And by then C3PO had his own cereal 3POs shaped like figure eights with a taste of honey, with a cut out 3PO mask on the back of the box. Lando had no choice but to submit to the Empire. He planned this out so that he could escape with his friends. He wasn’t betraying them at all.
Luke actually complicated the escape more than it had to be. If Luke doesn’t show up and listens to Yoda to stay on Dagobah, Lando and the crew still escape. The scene where she is screaming it’s a trap to Luke, is where the plan gets delayed. Because of this Han is taken away by Boba Fett.

Return would have been a good resolution to Empire had there been a lot less camp in the middle of it. Leia talks to one of these hitherto unknown creature like a child, but it could have gone full Lord Nibbler on her and ate her. Theyre cuddly and useless, but also not to be messed with. PICK A LANE GEORGE!
If theyd either been taken seriously all the way through, like the Noghri in the Legends novels, or treated as helpless but in need of saving from the Empire, or just not been there at all, then they'd not have upset the momentum of the plot.

Leia thought she might never see him again (because he'd either die being frozen or be lost forever as wall decor) and wanted to make sure Han knew how she really felt all along, and that she regrets her cattiness and bickering towards him. Han saying "I know" was both him assuring her that he understands why she behaved that way (both of them being from wildly different social standings and Leia feeling she can't allow herself to have feelings for a scoundrel like Han) and that he feels the same way about her. And as Harrison Ford correctly remarked, "I love you too" wouldn't have been a very Han Solo thing to say.

Hi J! To answer your question at the end (without spoilers as you requested) there are actually tons of plays and movies where the good guy loses. Back in Ancient Greece, they would actually spoil plays beforehand by telling you if it was a “Comedy” (which means the good guy wins) or a “Tragedy” (which means the good guy loses). They had to advertise tragedies as such ahead of time so that audiences wouldn’t get mad when the good guy lost. The words have changed meaning a bit over 4500 years, but there are still a ton of tragedy movies out there. I think as you watch more non-American movies you’ll come across more tragedies, that’s the most I can say without spoiling some of the biggest ones. Looking forward to seeing you continue your movie journey!

The similarities between the I'm your father scene and when Mufasa show himself in the clouds for Simba in the Lion King.
Vader: Search your feelings, you know it be true!
Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son!
Mufasa: You have forgotten who you are and so you have forgotten me!
    Remember who you are!
You are my son and the one true king!
James Earl Jones was just amazing.
