Sadly people love to take sides and forget one of the most important things. Music is meant to bring us together and calibrate it's form of expression. That is one of the reasons those in the music field chose that field to get into. Music is not supposed to devide us. I am so glad to see such a positive channel.

BTS never tried breaking into the US market. It was the ARMYs that brought them there. We fan voted to get BTS on the category of the Social Artist Award, and we pressured BBMAs to invite them (they originally weren't going to). BigHit and BTS never tried promoting in USA like the Big3. But why did we do that? Because BTS build a deep relationship with us. We wanted more than anything from them to grow. So we worked harder than any fandom in the world to make their success happen.
It wasn't smart or strategic. It was human connection doing wonders.

Many has tried before them like Wonder Girls, Rain and Girls Generation to specifically succeed in the US market without much success. And BTS didn't try to market with the US market in mind at the start, BTS become popular with no promotion in 2015 when they got their first album on Billboard album chart(The Most Beautiful Moment In Life Part 2). Even their Wings album in 2016 achieved number 24 on Billboard Album top 200 chart and Blood, Sweat and Tears 86th on the singles chart(if i remember correctly), with no promotion anywhere against the US market. Of course it helped that they were active on social media, but it was mostly the relate able music(co - produced and written by the members) targeting the social issues of young people today that helped them break through. Also their sincerity (with them being to work freely and express themselves without having a company telling them what to exactly do) helped, since many found them real in a way that not many artists are. They first started to promote in the US after their success with the wings album in US.
Thought i'd let you know :) Love that you take your time to go into BTS and don't care about the stupid fanwars, BTS and EXO respect each other so we should too

Yes, this is true. They never intentionally broke into the US market. Because of the size of their company, they took alternative methods to promote the band as the company had no media power. Plus, they had all the members share one account (so no one member would outshine the other) and gave the members relatively more freedom to interact with fans which created a tighter bond. They didn't even have any agents or US promoters when they became popular here. It's literally all due to the fans pushing them, their message, and their music touching a chord with the listeners. A truly inspirational and beautiful story.

@@niamhbutler5685 no actually big companies have tried numerous times with acts such as Wonder Girls, CL, Girls Gen, and they even hoped PSY would be more than just a one hit wonder over here. just look into it a bit and you'll see. Just bc they haven't had success doesn't mean they weren't trying and the base goal of kpop, economically, is to be spread worldwide in order to bring more revenue back to the country. They're even creating a TV show in SK thats main purpose is getting artists songs on the billboard chart now

The big3 groups definitely did try to break into US. Like girls generation, tvxq, wonder girls, rain, etc.
They had no choice but to use social media because the big3 companies controlled media play. It was said in the video I don't whether you paid attention or not, it said countless times cut from show, performances shortened and all of that.
Also they never targeted the west or US, their album wings charted at #26 without promotion. We did that for them. I think after billboard 2017 (may) they started promoting in the US.
I also think that their raw and personal lyrics reached people. Hence the success.

As an ARMY EXO-L I love your reactions!!!
I love how you noticed how personal their lyrics are. They do a lot of songs that are obviously pulled straight from their lives and their hearts. They tell their stories. It's one of the reasons I got sucked into army. Whether it's deep metaphors and symbolism, or personal experiences that give you a real look into their lives/struggles, their lyrics are always meaningful.

BTS never really set their sights on the US market or any market for that matter. Instead, they invested in a relationship with their fans were we grew together. This fandom invests time, effort and resources only for BTS. Hence the boys are marketable. Any market in the world they decide to enter they have a fandom waiting there to spend basically consume anything they put out. That's what they did differently. They organically built real relationships that made us care about them. When people try to "set their sights" on things it always ends up feeling fake because they're assuming what people want and trying to fit that mold. BTS came being themselves and never tried to fit a mold they made music they wanted to make and told their story. Their realness won us over.

    • @missanguilla1
      @missanguilla1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

Well said, That and their lyrics; they left their blood sweat and tears in their pen and transferred it to their songs which resonated in the hearts of many people. The things they write and sing/rap about resonate with people/ARMY. My discovery of BTS was by accident, depending on how you look at it. : ) but im as GP as they come lol. BTS is a phenomenon, one that cant be replicated, it is not a recipe for success. BTS used SNS to build a relationship with fans not to gain popularity. SNS became popular because of the fans they organically gained. I find it funny when ppl think BTS target US and SNS. If that was the case id have English subtitles on Bangtan TV ages ago. BTS still don't even have an English song on their album lol. N most ARMY don't care if they ever have one. ARMY x BTS have a bond that I dont think can be fully understood from the outside looking in. ARMY is the wings of BTS helping them to push them higher, give them support, strength, defend, break down those barriers and in some ways vice versa.

They didn't really target to US market specifically. People found them and then it happened.
The reason why they used social media so much is bcuz they didn't have enough chance to apear on TV and promote themselves since they're from a small company.
So they made their own shows and stuff aired through sns and TH-cam... which ended up helping them to get popularities worldwide

Other key of their succesfulnes is THEY FEED ARMY VERY WELL through social media of course, when the other fandom dying waiting their favorit grup comeback, because obviously it is only time they can see them more often, BTS is just always be there even not in promotion time.
    1. They have their own yt channels, where they drop behind the scene of making MV, behind music program, back stage of awards show, sometimes they just drop random activity from their dayli life in random time.
    2. Instead having personal account, they ONLY HAVE 1 Twitter acc run by 7 members, so if one member can't active, there is still other member who will tweet something.
    3. They do Vlive sooo many time, in unpredictable time, after concert, after they release song or just if they want.
    4. Vlive not only use to do the live stream, instead being in tv show, they MAKE THEIR OWN reality show and airing in Vlive. Up until now there is more than 3 show they have done. One of the populer show is call BTS RUN, and they just drop new season now airing every tuesday
    5. Because of some of them is producer and some of them is still learning to produce song, sometimes they just drop a new single or mixtape FREE in SoundCloud
    6. They update fancafe more often, and do chating with some fans in random time
    7. THEIR SONG, not like other kpop grup who just talking about love relationship, they make a very personal song talking about how to love yourself, they help us (army) to get through difficult times through their song and lyric (i suggest to listen "love myself") their song is just personal to us, and that what makes them big now
    8. their concept of music video always have a theory, and always related from one album to other, they make army "thinking" and not just enjoy the music, in simple way, they make us smarter than before
    9. And now they make WEBTOON and BOOK base on their past theory and music video

You're right! at 7:50 it is Suga getting super specific because that's how he does. But it's actually a BTS with all the members on the track. It's a hidden track which makes it very special to fans because only fans really know the song. The song is called "Sea" and was written by RM and is one of his babies. The whole song is really beautiful and powerful and (as always with BTS) very real. BTS are one of the artists I know of from ANYWHERE who talks about what it's really like to be famous. The song talks about the pride they have for how far they've come but also how scary it is for them to see how they are. That success can also come with intense fear of falling and a sense of loss as suddenly all the goals you had are achieved.
Not in that song, but I also respect BTS because they also go out of their way to tell fans that it's okay if they fall. That they make sure to have other important things in their life so their happiness doesn't depend on their careers. They tell fans to take care of ourselves first and not be afraid of BTS loosing popularity because they know they can't be this famous for ever. They know it will end but have decided to make the most every opportunity and work so hard (too hard) to repay fans for taking them this far

I love this reaction so much, I love both EXO and BTS, I think BTS never intended to be so international as other comments have said already, I think the way they used social media was so interactive and different, and that attracts attention from around the world, apparently they got more international interest than they did in Korea initially and you can definitely see that in early videos where they go to different countries and fans know them

  • @salmagm3249

In fact, other Korean artists tried to enter directly into the US market (they made songs 100% in English and all) but they didn't make it. BTS did not try it directly, the first time they were on any BB chart their Korean fandom wasnt very big and the company still couldnt focus on promoting in the US, their goal was never USA, now that they are very famous there they are doing a lot of on concerts and programs there but itss for the same thing that you said, its the most important music market, it would be very silly not to take advantage of it, but they made their way little by little on the charts, with songs dedicated to be promoted in Korea, so I think it is even more amazing :)
For a lot of nofans it would be seen as if they target USA cause "suddenly" they went to BBMA and AMA but it was step by step, and everything was bcause their fandom in there. I cant tell if they are fans bcause of their music, looks, their sns interactions or what, but they did it.
I justa wanted to say that lol even if its looks like, they never tried to enter on USA, it was a side effect, a GREAT side effect

BTS weren’t the first to try their luck in the US. Wonder Girls, BoA, Se7en, Rain... they all tried to penetrate the US market. LOL yeah hair colors or positions are something I always tell people never memorize. I remember when I was first learning I tried hair colors and I was lost for a bit. That is what BTS tries to do, they try to be relatable and to tell their story with their music. We all agree and they do as well that the hardships the went through together is what helped to make them as strong as they are now. I think it helped when they had difficulties this year, the closeness they have allowed them to get together, talk, cry and work out what was wrong and how to fix it. Yeah they actually kind of put Jimin forward as a bit of a badass, so it makes sense that you might of had that first impression. Yes, you can go in order because you aren't diving into the story line they have running through their MV timeline.

I think Jimin is one of the members with the most distorted perception of himself. Maybe not so much now, because he's improved a lot over the past couple years. But it was especially bad around Blood Sweat and Tears, you can see his insecurities with himself in Burn The Stage. We even learn of his horribly extreme diet of eating just one meal every ten days because he thought he was fat for whatever reason. I think for many of these reasons he's my bias because I can relate to him so much, and he's also the most outwardly affectionate member.

Thank you for such a nice reaction. One correction that other commenters have made is the whole marketing to the US thing. Because BTS was shut out of so many shows, Big Hit did develop an international audience by sending them on tour. You can find videos of their early tours through Asia and South America. Big Hit did not have a SNS policy except to tell BTS that they couldn't have individual accounts on social media, but had to respond as a team. (They still only have 1 twitter account that all members use -- 14 million followers.) The members took it upon themselves to post things. Jimin and V especially. They even started filming backstage and behind the scenes stuff (BTS Bombs). They filmed inside their dorms, birthdays and anniversary celebrations, day to day stuff.
Because of their treatment on reality shows (see Jungkook and the hamburger incident), Big Hit filmed their own reality shows. They include Rookie King, American Hustle Life, BTS Run, Bon Voyage, Summer Packages, etc. I'm probably leaving stuff out...
But international fans began to translate videos and make subtitled compilations and this is how ARMY became so huge.
If you want to know more about their early days, xceleste has a video on her channel called BTS Hardships.

Companies like SM have tried to break into the U.S before but it didn't reap the results they expected. Girls Generation came to U.S and it didn't do anything. They just didn't think the U.S. was interested after they tried several times. BTS just had this special thing about them where their growth was organic and not forced. BTS just got big enough in the U.S where shows started asking for them. Unlike S.M paying for spots to appear.

Your reaction videos is making me smile and happy. Not just coz you're reacting to BTS (Am not one of those who only appreciate people just coz BTS...) But the fact that you're an EXO-L and do this bravely without any prejudice and actually try to get to know BTS with an open-mind and heart is just something really rare. People these days are so fond of Bandwagonniing and shit and uses BTS for their own gains without actually trying to understand and paying attention to what they're reacting to and they would give such fake reactions. and I like how you keep it real and simple. So yeah, I really appreciate that. Thank you so much. ( ^_^)b
Also, about JIMIN and that specific fan-sign moment you've seen, You probably only seen that part or haven't seen the longer or atleast the full video on that moment. which would be understandably as of why you might've mistook it and had different perception of him during that time. If you've watched the whole moment of that (or atleast what happened next after he said that...) You would understand it more. he was trying to play out the "cool guy" but ended up getting shy and embarrassed by what he just did right after he said that and ended up Laughing at himself, hitting the other member next to him while laughing (JIN) and Jin was quick to react and everyone laughed at that moment too. You can watch it here. it's in here in this video compilation... th-cam.com/video/Vwpb1cwj5Wo/w-d-xo.html :))

ARMYs are the ones who brought them in the US, not the company, they didn't try to. Even in 2015, BTS is already getting worldwide attention and charted their wings album on bb200, first for a Korean act and charted high on UK charts already. Their growth was organic. Deserving of the successes they're getting for playing fair and not falling for other's means of cheating.

Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying your reactions! It's fun watching you learn more about the guys. :) I am an "older" ARMY, and only discovered them when they performed at the AMAs in 2017. Of course loved their music and performances, but also was so drawn to their genuineness and appreciation for the fans. BTW, all the boys are pretty squishy, lol. Jin is my bias who calls himself Worldwide Handsome, but he is as soft as the others lol. Looking forward to your future videos!

Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. Never saw this info video. It was interesting to watch with you. So BTS never tried breaking into the US market. My understanding is that they did social media because they had no other options. Because it worked for them Bang PD learned and used that knowledge with his other groups. Doing social media people from all over the world found them and their music. Their message resonated with fans who became Army. Army started requesting BTS in USA and radio did not know who they were talking about. Some smart ppl started looking into it and started playing BTS songs on the radio in different states. NY is way harder. I have never heard a BTS song on the radio until Boy with Luv ft. Halsey. But I watched vids on YT and other states played Fake Love, Mic Drop, DNA, etc. It's amazing. I wish NY radio were more open minded. 🔥 love u. hugs. -NY USA Army 💜

Ok, I literally burst out laughing when you said you saw the clip of Jimin saying "I know" and thought he was this cool guy because literally 3 seconds later in the clip he smacks Jin's arm out of embarrassment, Jin yells "Why did you hit me??" and he reverts back to his shy, mochi phase squeaking out "Sorry, sorry". I found that hilarious. 😂

I loved your reactions and I love the way you are always impartial and very understanding and possitive. Thank you for noticing the true friendship and respect existing between idol groups (including obviously EXO and BTS) because that's the reason I believe fan-wars are pointless and comparisons are useless since we love them all, of course we have our favourite but at least I want to believe we are mature enough to recognize others achievements and efforts. Also a thing about the US breakthrough, compared to other idol groups, most showed their personalities through variety shows etc. which are great, but won't get a lot of attention worldwide because they're Korean TV programs, I guess that's why BTS and their use of social media in an unfiltered way, they have full control of their Twitter etc. It's very interactive and gained attention outside Korea. The one advantage they had being from a small company I guess is they independence the got to have which the bigger companies sometimes lacks (I hope this changes though, I love so many idol groups and want more of them to be successful and known worldwide)

Hahaha that's so funny that that was your impression of Jimin! That is SO DIFFERENT from how he is. The clip you were talking about, it's sad that it wasn't the full clip. After a fan tells him he is handsome, he says "I know", then gets shy, hides his face a bit and hits (softly) Jin next to him haha. Thank you so much for your continued interest and open mind for BTS!! As a side note, is there a particular video or channel you would recommend for starting to get to know the EXO members? I've seen a bunch of their videos as well as subunit EXO-CBX (absolutely LOVE Hey Mama). So I'm pretty good at picking out Chen and Xuimin, but I would like to be able to put names to faces and really get to know their personalities. Any help is appreciated!! There are a LOT of EXO videos out there and I don't want to watch one with incorrect facts, etc.

Panic at the BTS I would definitely react to the individual guides by mouma k (I believe that’s how it’s spelled) the video is a little older but she does cover a lot of info. I’ll be uploading my own EXO guide soon because unfortunately there are just a ton of the “unhelpful guides” out there and it either just not informational or just a bunch of inside jokes that new people would even understand so I would stick to the individual guides to start off with. D.O.’s guide by her was blocked though so you’ll have to use the guide from P&E (I believe is their name) for his.
I hope that helps to start you off. I’ll also be posting a best vocals of ALL the members soon as well so once that’s up definitely check that out too! Thanks for watching! 😊❤️

A big part of their success too was that nearly all kpop groups wait to become famous in Korea before targeting anything international and BTS did the opposite. They didn't wait at all after debut to begin touring abroad even tiny gigs. Their first concert in the US had like 200 people, but they left Korea to catch up and focused energies elsewhere ... and put out TONS of online free content and subbed all their music videos and never copyrighted reactions and even encouraged them as free press. Plus a good chunk of luck. Honestly they'll admit it themselves there's so many talented hard working idols, not to mention artists of any kind, it takes some luck to be able to take off like they did in what really is such a short period

Great reaction. There is on youtube BTS History since debut all songs if you want you can start from there. Since V is your bias I recommend you Stigma and Tear singularity(he has so interesting voice can go high and low is unique). By the way Jimin is a very sweet boy and he always cares about all members(his best friend is V but he is also close to Jungkook). When V said on the stage that his grandmother died and he cried Jimin huged him so strong, it was very emotional, that showed me that Jimin is very sensitive and cannot see other members cry especially V. These people are so talented and I hope will receive more love and respect. I don't understand why some people hate them so much, this is wrong and rude. COSMOPOLITAN(the magazine) has an article about kpop which is very rude I was shooked, I just don't understand!

Singularity and Stigma are solo performances of V's... I recommend both of them. Though Stigma, in particular, is a tear-jerker. There is also a sort of alternate universe storyline in many of their MV's so some of them should be done in a certain order. Not too sure where it starts other than "I Need You" possibly.

I don't think bts is like any other K-pop group (no offense) or like ANY OTHER ARTIST, they are different, they are just different, they give of a feeling of Legends World Legends like the Beatles and dare I say someday even bigger than them, they are artist who no one disrespects (even the haters knows that yea they are great artist) they are like artists who are born to be CELEBRITY/IDOL and only come ones in a millennia....
They have such a connection with their fans that we don't ever falter to work for them, we all have different reasons for why we like them, but one thing is for sure, we can never repay them for what they have done for us, through their story, music, Hardwork, personality & everything that makes them BTS because this group is going to be One Of The Greatest Things To Ever Happen To Earth. & they never targeted any country, the people from the countries wanted them there 😁, they just put out their hard work and people started knowing them and once to get to know them, you can't help but like these guys
