Your explanation of getting rid of diseased leaves,
is helpful. I used to clean the plant and just leave the leaves
on the ground, not knowing that the fungus is still active.
    Great video!

I can't thank you enough for your recipe to eliminate blackspot, I've treated a very sickly rose this spring that has got progressively worse over the last few years. I was a little concerned initially to see the foliage curl up and go black but it was in a bad way and now four weeks after the first treatment there is new healthy growth on the branches and this old rose looks in good shape again.

I had the same issue for few years, tried pruning, tried spray, which worked for a little while. What worked for me was a hard prune in the autumn, removed approximately 3 to 5 inches deep by 20 inches radius of soil from around the roots, replaced it with horse manure, leave it over the winter then repeat the same in the spring. That worked wonders for me. I had the idea of this because my local garden centre guy told me that, roses are a very hungry plant. I’ve been doing it now for 3 seasons without any problems.

Great Vid. I battled this for nearly 4 seasons and did all of the suggested stuff and could not get rid of it. I was going to rip out all of my rose bushes (about 20) and plant something else. I did not want to do this and out of desperation I thought" Well if the alcohol will sterilize the cutters why not just spray the rose bushes with it. I used standard rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and every morning in the early morning 6a.m.ish I went out and saturated the rose bushes with the alcohol, got the underside of every leaf too. I also sprayed all of the ground around them. I did this for 2 weeks and haven't seen a sign of it since. Hope this helps along with all of the the things mentioned in the vid.

Also, it's important to cut the dead canes all the way back to the crown (the base of the rose). And cut the dead branches all the way back to their respective main stem. Why keep all those dead branches? Other than those points, your advice is sensible and well presented.

Great video thanks! My one suggestion is to have your bucket ready as and put the cut the leaves and dead straight into the bucket. Dropping the leaves on the ground can spread the fungus. You spray the ground but just a suggestion.

  • @MrDanmjack
    @MrDanmjack 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

You should also cut any dead dying or diseased wood from the rose. Any damage to the epidermis (skin) or rotting wood is easy access for new disease. Just like having a cut on your hand and not cleaning it. It will become infected. Dead heading down to the nearest leaf/bud is essential as this prevents rotting and disease access as you so rightly said at the top of the vid.

Great great video!! I’ve started paying more attention to my roses this time around. I have three and each has different issues. 1.) It’s a big bush with small roses and it’s getting covered in powdery white mildew and all the buds get covered. 2.) This one has been blooming beautiful but I started seeing that the stems are getting black spots and some leaves are getting a white tint to it. Right now there are about three open roses and 11 buds waiting to bloom. Should I wait for them to bloom or start cutting off the infected stems? 3.) This one hasn’t bloomed yet but it is showing one bud. This rose bush is in a big pot and it is have aphids crawling all around the rim of the pot and onto the leaves that touch the rim. I have used a water/soap mix and a water/soap/baking soda mix and also All-in-One Rose & Flower care. I’m going to remove the dead leaves and other trash from the roots and cover it in mulch like you did and hope that helps. Do you have any other tips or recommendations? I’ve been reading online and watch a bunch of videos to try and save them. Thanks!!

Your videos are so helpful and I just finished removing and cleaning up all the leaves that have black spot. There’s something else happening to this climbing rose which I grew in a large plant pot and it happened last year too. Some of the leaves have turned a very dark green purple color and are shriveled up.
I wonder if it under watering ?

I appreciate your video. I am always hoping someone will have a new idea. I have not been very successful stopping the blackspot. However, I know that dead leaves do accumulate in my wood chip mulch, and I can only change that once/year. I used to go out daily and remove all newly affected leaves, but it didn't seem to make a difference? I have not stripped an entire rose bush (majority of leaves having spots even if not yellow yet), because I fear they won't produce flowers that year and the entire point of the roses is ruined?? I have read that the green leaves with just a little black spot/s will be cured by spray (I started using chemicals from nursery last year), but that the discoloration will be there forever (even after the fungus is dead). Thus, they advise removing those leaves anyway. I know a rose won't grow or flower if almost all leaves are missing, so I am hesitant to do this??
Also, I do get sick sometimes and can not spray every 7 days - that is when the black spot grows. Otherwise, I would have healthy, pretty roses (as in previous years). Any suggestions for this? Or do I just have to find a way to spray regularly and usually in morning hours? Thanks for your help and advice! Enjoyed the video!

Excellent video & thank you for the post
Question - you only removed the 'yellow' leaves w black spots - what about the 'green' leaves w black spots? Are you expecting the 'fungicide' to stop the fungal infection on these leaves?

I had to take all my leaves off! Every leaf had to go😢. Late damp start to our spring I believe created this issue. New shoots are coming though, so that’s good

Just be careful not to over do the oil and always test one leaf, wait 24 hours and then spray the rest of the plant if it worked.

@@ProjectDiaries I used one teaspoon grape seed oil. I was waiting for the evening to do it so I will make sure to test it out before using it on the whole bush. Thanks again I love your videos ❤️

I live in th deep South n we have humid weather. I have large hy tea rosebeds n use th fungicide that is a 3 in 1 product fungicide, insecticide n fertilizer all in one. This treatment lasts a good 6 weeks. I keep them trimed short to encourage blooming n pick n give them away quite often. I also have a spray when i cant apply this product. I have some of th best roses in my area n bdeauriful neat long picking roses

It really doesn’t matter if you remove all the leaves with roses as they are tough as old boots. I usually just cut the whole lot off, even leaves with only a tiny bit of black spot. Then I water and feed, feed, feed like crazy. One month later; beautiful new leaves and a bumper display of flowers. And don’t forget to feed! (No fungicide required).

What if the mold is visible also in the stems and branches? What to do? Change soil? Cut some branches as well?
