I met Jim twice in my younger years. Once, at a friend's wedding reception in southern Indiana. He popped into the lodge because his fishing trip in Brown County got rained out. The second time was at "Phoenix Hill" in Louisville. He came into the dressing room where my band was hanging out between sets. We smoked a ton and drank even more. I nearly pissed myself laughing.
I used to love Ernest growing up. The Halloween movie scared the shit out of me. I was shocked to find out about his Shakespearean acting chops. Rest easy ya crazy bastard.
I knew someone who worked with him ages ago and told me not only did he have a heart of gold, but he also had a photographic memory and would memorize scripts and shoot with no issues. He's one of the very few that there's millions of stories out there about him and none of them are bad. He really was a sweet man who I like to think God called home early because he was too good for this world. The Ernest films are still some of the very few that legitimately make me belly laugh.
I will never forget that scene in Ernest Saves Christmas, watched it recently, there's this scene where he's doing a truck driver character delivering snakes to a hollywood set and he says "That's what people in Hollywood like: Snakes!" That was his most legendary performance in my opinion 🤣🤣

I met Jim at the Hands on Museum in Johnson City Tennessee. He was promoting Ernest Scared Stupid and I was so bashful and afraid to get my picture taken with him. He was so kind and affable and made such a funny face I couldn't help but laugh. Jim you made a memory for a kid that he will never forget. Thank you.
That right their is a man who mastered it all. When you can go from being the most funniest actor to the most serious actor without any question or doubt you are truly a 1 of a kind. Love yuh earnest 👍🏻❤️ know what I mean 🤪 lol
I think the key to Jim's success wasn't necessarily the "goofy redneck" angle, it was that you could tell that he was putting his all into the character. In spite of being silly, there was a real heart under the performance which is hard to convey in advertising. We've seen Larry The Cable Guy and Madea kind of burn out because they were just one dimensional gag characters. Ernest got milage because you saw him as someone you might know, exaggerated as it may have been.
Immediately recognizable, and he was everywhere, almost all at once. He did TV, radio and movies and nobody spent more time doing charity work. He made personal visits to kids with cancer who wrote him. We laughed at him, then with him and then we just loved him.
TH-cam is wild, man. I actually remember watching this story as a kid on the news, live. Down to the bit at the end where he's reciting Hamlet and then breaks character and says "know what I mean?" I told everyone that he was a Shakespearean actor and nobody believed me!
I want to see the Shakespeare clip by itself. It's a shame Varney got stuck with Ernest doing comedy, when it's obvious he had the capacity for so much more.
