  • Take an August Garden Tour of My Carolina Garden and my North Carolina full sun gardens! Mother Nature has taken a toll on my August garden, with a period of drought this summer, some tropical storm flooding, and heat indexes in the triple digits. With all of that in mind, the gardens are looking a little tired. In this last week, the temperatures have dropped just a bit. That has helped motivate me to get out in the garden cleaning up, weeding, deadheading and clipping back some plants.
My name is Nicole Roggeman, and I am a gardener in zone 8B in coastal North Carolina. Gardening is my passion, and I like to try new combinations of plants together, I plant for fun and try not to worry too much. Since My Carolina Garden is in Wilmington NC, we have hot, humid summers, and have sandy soil here. These are all things I keep in mind throughout the growing season. If you like my video content, please subscribe, and stick with me as my gardens grow!

Nicole, your garden has been through a lot but it is coming back to life. I can see the improvement since the rain has left. Keep up the good
gardening. Here in Il we have had drought and high temps. Thanks for sharing. See you next time.

Goodness, the more I hear from people, the more I can see no area is immune to challenging weather. We have a lot to battle through with Mother Nature, but that's why they say gardening is a labor of love. Thank you for your kind & supportive message! See you next time! 😄💚

What a great message to get, thank you! I certainly don't want to make boring videos, so I worried a bit (clearly) that what I have wasn't showy enough. It's real though, and more than anything I want to be genuine. Anyway, I appreciate you. ☺️

I almost gave up gardening looking at all the professionally groomed yards. The reality is different and I should keep on trying and give myself credit for the effort. Thank you for being genuine . And by the way - your yard is perfect - you have a generous size garden and it looks amazing. I have only 3 small flower beds and a small veggie garden - and they are not any near this gorgeous :(

Hi Nicole, The front garden I would leave the shrub looking whimsy, they are beautiful! I was thinking that maybe when you had the flood from the storm, all that water was running off other peoples property. There may have been weed killer, or salted pool water mixed in. That could have taken its toll on some of your misfits. Just a thought. However, your garden is still very beautiful 😍

Yep things in my garden are looking very tired and already have leaves falling from an oak tree earlier than normal! My potted plants are mostly still going strong and I would enjoy them more if the mosquitos weren't so bad right now and I could sit out on the porch! Thanks for showing us around your lovely garden!

I have always passed up purple hearts but having seen them in your pots next year I'm going to try them and see if they do as well for me as they do for you. Don't feel bad about your garden. I think we all experience tired gardens come August, no matter where you live. I live up north in New Hampshire and we had an extremely humid and hot summer with not much rain. Gardens usually bounce back once the cooler weather returns. 😊🌸

Hi Nicole🌺. Your garden looks amazing in August and you can add some flowering plant like vinca, snapdragon, creeping plumbego, amsonia, bee palm monarda , blue color of rose of Sharon , tecoma , blue lobelia, penstemon , agastache , Carolina jasmine . If you trimmed the abelia shrubs beautifully you can add hydrangeas behind them . Have a great day.🌺🌻🌺

Went from rainy spring where slugs pretty much decimated everything, to extreme heat and drought. My garden looks horrible. We are finally dipping down next week and I plan on doing an entire revamp. Our summers are starting to rival yours and I think it’s time to rethink how and what I plant. I just can’t keep up water wise.
