  • Located on a wide, high plateau of rich farmland, Floyd was originally named Jacksonville for Andrew Jackson, seventh US president. Beginning in the 1970s, Floyd has become a mecca for artisans and "back to the land" proponents, with shops, galleries, restaurants and a vibrant farmers market. On Friday evening, residents and visitors flock to the Floyd Country Store for traditional music and dancing. The Jacksonville Center for the Arts offers classes and shows at the edge of town in a restored barn. Floydfest, an annual four-day celebration with seven stages and a wide variety of musical styles, takes place in July. Floyd is also home to County Sales, which distributes and preserves old time and bluegrass music.

My friends think I'm crazy for wanting to move back home to this little town when I graduate, but there is no place I love more than Floyd County.

In the late 70"s I lived in Floyd for a few years, my father lived there for 30 years until he passed. Buffalo mountain, twin falls, good hard working people...God's country! Thanks for the memories....

I found Floyd, Va online recently. I have never been there before. But, for some reason, I get a feeling that tells me to go there. To go "back home".
    It's a strange feeling, but it's nice.

Love this place. It's my home. I've moved all over the country and kept coming back. Wouldn't want to raise my children anywhere else. Love my "POC" friends who live here too and continue to stay for years. Unfortunately there will also be racism. It's up to all of us to continue to fight the good fight. Something we Floydians know how get together to do.

If you only saw it 30 years ago and how the Friday night jamboree was. I used to put my gun, setting against the fence after deer hunting and walk to listen to bluegrass. The fence is behind the store and we still own all of that. They charge you now to come in. I guess the "new locals" like that. The best music was in the ally or in the hardware store next door. Upstairs was also awesome due to the fact they were the next coming to the stage. I just wish they would bring it back to where it was, go in have a good time do a little flat footing if you care to and listen to great banjo and fiddle music.

I don't live in the town or county of Floyd but I have family living there. It's a peaceful place to go to. As for racism, I don't know. As for the Confederate flag, I believe people need to read to learn what the Confederate Flag stood for. It's a flag & not all of the Confederate soldiers were white. There are a lot of fine citizens in Floyd County.

If you are black (or really any POC), I suggest you really think before you come visit Floyd. I'm a 19 year old black kid who grew up here for most of my life, and I'll tell you this town still has some very real problems. The Sons Of Confederate Veterans still march in our Christmas parade, we recently had a group "rally for the Confederate flag," and racism is still very prevalent in the school system and around town. Don't be fooled by this video (just count the number of black/POC you see in this clip lol). Just a warning!

A link about the first black person to graduate floyd county HS in 1960. She says something completely different then you, and that was 50 years before your time.
      Maybe YOU were the problem!
I bet you lived on New Town Road, but acted like you grew up in the ghetto.
