    Thank you for your patterns and tutorials. I am going to make a sun hat for my cousin. She says her head is too big for any of the purchased hats available. I am hopeful this one will fit her well! Your invisible slip stitch and chainless sc, hdc, dc stitches has made such a tremendous difference in my finished products! They look much more professionally made now & I am not hesitant to have them out there!!! Thank you, again! :-)

    Really like this hat. Followed the video and written instructions for 6-12 months. Got almost to the brim and realized the hat was big enough to fit my head. I’m usually a tight stitch crocheter but used the same size hook recommended. No idea what I did wrong.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Patricia. Did you check your gauge and adjust hook size as needed to match the gauge in the pattern? Every crocheter is different, so even if you used the same size hook as the pattern recommends, your stitches may come out a different size. Also, sometimes different yarn texture and needle material combinations can make your stitches end up tighter or looser. Feel free to send me a photo of your piece to blogger[at]yayforyarn.com, and I will be happy to help troubleshoot. :)

    I'm gonna try to make this with nylon yarn. I'm hoping it would provide more protection from the sun that way.

    I wonder if it would be possible to tighten the stitches or use a smaller hook to make a hat for someone with alopecia with no holes. My daughter uses hats because of lupus alopecia and she’s very sensitive about it being visible but hates wigs.

      Hi Hera,
      You could try lining the cap section (not the brim) with a lightweight woven cotton fabric and handsewing it in place. Have a good day!

      Maybe a light weight cotton would work? Like comfy cotton? It's a bit stretchy too and very soft

      Hi, this pattern might just work for you as is - I just looked at the written pattern on Yay for Yarn's website, and in the instructions, it says:
      "Hat is designed with negative ease, meaning the hat is a little smaller than the wearer’s actual head circumference, so it will stretch to comfortably stay on the head. If you do not want the hat to have negative ease, choose the next size up."
      That does not mean that the hat will stretch much, not to the point where you could see through the stitches. I think that since it's done in single crochet with an I hook, you probably could not see through the fabric much, if at all.
      Also, I think it's important to do a swatch, because everyone's gauge is so different - it's possible that your gauge compared to the pattern might be where you need to go down a hook size anyways, so it's worth it to check. Or, you could possibly make the larger size with a smaller hook, like an H or G. But try it the way it's written / according to your gauge first, and after a few rounds, put it on your daughter too see what she thinks.
      You might want to make a few rounds of the pattern and then put it on your daughter's head so she can see if it's to her liking, I think that this pattern, because of the way it's made, is a great for what your daughter needs. I'd say it's definitely worth a try.
      What helped me with being able to use patterns as a more of a guide to make a certain size, was practicing working in rounds and staggering increases, even if it's just making flat circles. Good luck to you!

      Hi Hera! The stitches in this hat are pretty close together, so when the hat is worn, you can't really see through the fabric unless you are looking at it very closely. The yarn I used is a smooth, dense mercerized cotton. If you were to use a different #4 worsted weight yarn that is less dense and a little fluffier (doesn't have to be fuzzy), that can help make the holes disappear. A cotton yarn like Sugar 'n' Cream (or whatever type of cotton you'd normally use for dishcloths) would work well. I hope this helps!

    I’m making the exactly the same size as your making, adult small. I have noticed since I went down a size 4:50 and it’s smaller now. I’m not sure how many stitches I should have, confused to how to find my size.
    Thanks

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brenda! To choose a size, you'll need to measure the wearer's head circumference and compare that measurement to the measurement in the "Sizes" section of the written pattern. To know how many stitches you should have, just follow along with the written instructions. The number of stitches you should have is given at the end of each round. I hope this helps!

    The cotton that im using keeps spiltting, i dont think its used for washcloths buts its so frustrating to work with bc i have to stop and fix the piece of sutring

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the cotton is splitting, that could be caused by several different things. If the stitches are tight, and you're having to push the hook in and out of the stitches, that could cause the yarn to split. Or, it may be that the yarn does not have much twist to it, which can allow the smaller strands that make up the whole strand of yarn to separate. If it is splitting to the point that part of the strand of yarn is breaking, it may be constructed in a manner that is not as sturdy. In that case, it might be intended for more delicate fabrics and may not be ideal for a project like this. I hope this info is helpful, and I hope your hat turns out great!

    Im at the 20th row and my hat is not curling down the way it should be i hav e ended with 82 stitches, should i change to a smaller hook??
    Tia

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! The hat will gradually curve down, but it will not immediately begin to curve down when you start working the straight rounds in the body of the hat. Whether it should be curving by the 20th round depends on which size you are making. For some of the larger sizes, the 20th round would only be a few rounds after the last round of increases, so the hat would not start to straighten out yet at that point. Changing to a smaller hook will likely make the hat a little to tight. Also, if you have 82 stitches, there might be a slight mistake in your increases. The child large should have 78 stitches, and the adult small should have 84, but there aren't any sizes in the pattern that are supposed to have 82 stitches at this point. Without the correct number of stitches for the size you are making, the increases for the brim will not work out correctly either. So I would suggest checking your increases before going further into the pattern to see if there is a mistake there. If you have any more questions, just let me know. :) I hope this helps!

      Hi! I believe there is a small button to add a photo to a message on facebook. On my message section on the computer, the button to add a photo looks like a paperclip. When I click on the paperclip, it prompts me to select a file from my device to add to the message. I hope this helps!

    Why do you use such a big hook, ? Couldnt u use a 3:50? What is your ply for the cotton that youre using.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Catherine! The yarn I used is #4 Worsted Weight, also called Aran or 10 ply. It has a dense, rope-like strand, so I used a slightly larger hook so the stitches would be easier to work into. I hope this helps!

  • @mjperfume1523

    Do u recommend the craft yarn or is that the one that has fuzzies on them, i dont think they are only used for making dish clothes.
    Why do i get a knot when i make the invisable join??

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Catherine! I recommend a smooth, washable yarn that is not fuzzy or fluffy like the typical acrylic or wool yarns. You can use the pure cotton yarn that is used for dish cloths if you like. I just chose to use the mercerized cotton because I prefer the look of it.
      When we work the invisible join in this project, we're not turning the work after each round. So if you're getting a knot at the join, perhaps the loop is pulled through in the wrong direction. The invisible slip stitch is done by dropping the loop on the hook, inserting the hook into the first stitch of the round from back to front, and pulling the loop through from front to back. This should look relatively smooth. If you're having a problem with this stitch, just send me a photo at blogger@yayforyarn.com and I will be happy to help!

      I think i have the invisable knot correct now. Being that its cotton that im using, doesnt have a shine to it which would make it more slippery to reach to the next stitch. What im finding that after i make the invst, i have top move the strand out of the way and flip to the other side, meaning the right side of the hat and continue into the next stitch. I frogged it until the row that starts the increasing, i believe u do this until the hat measures 6/34 inches. I now have the correct stitch count of 84 stitches too.

    I don't understand why you are giving different size pattern information if we are not allowed to give it away. I will not make one for my granddaughter and then have to sell it to her. I crochet things to give away as gifts not to sell. Because of this, I will not be watching or recommending your videos to anyone.

    • @YayForYarn
      @YayForYarn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Kaleen. The pattern copyright does not say that you can't give away the hats you make using the pattern. The pattern copyright says that you may not share, copy, sell, or give away the written pattern itself, because I own the copyrights to the pattern instructions. This means it is not okay for someone to copy the instructions and post them on their own site, or publish the instructions anywhere else. However, I do not own the rights to your finished item made from the pattern. You are welcome to give away as many finished hats as you like, or sell some finished hats if you prefer. If anyone wants to share the pattern with a friend, they are welcome to share a link to the original page on my blog where the free written pattern is available. I hope this helps!
