- This was one of the few Switch games coming out this year I was really looking forward to, Astral Chain. The combat is a bit oof BUT I love everything else!

Its fun but the controls take some getting used to
Agreed it took me 4-5 hours before the combat really started to click. Once it does its down right glorious 10/10 game.

As most hack and slash games, or Platinum games, you get better moves as the game progresses. So, don't worry about combat or combos getting boring.
Since most Platinum games are based off DMC it makes sense.

@@youknowyoufuckedupright3058 Wouldn't really say that seeing as they came out around the same time.(Literally like 6 months or so apart; give or take.) DMC has pretty much kept it's same style consistently. Albeit; being improved and tweaked over the years.

aww bruh he left before the combat could actually get good. I'm not gonna lie I had the same first impression he did though, I was like "damn this shit's kinda....not platinumgames enough." But after about 2 hours I'm hooked, idk why they didn't lead with that combat flow from the jump and kinda tricked us into thinking that it's bad?

The beginning felt like I was fighting with a lil stick and a kankuro puppet. In otherwords very disappointing.

@@DaddynHay there isn't that much to actually do at that point though. Attack with Right Trigger, your legion does most of the damage and is automatic at this point, you're not even an active participant in the majority of the combat at this point.

@@ItsYuhBoyyyy gamefreak is working on their own game, so they couldn't put all their resources into Pokemon. You're probably comparing it to other switch titles, rather than previous Pokemon titles. Cuz there's better animation for moves, if you've played/watched the demo you could tell that old attack moves look way better. People can't seem to understand these things, and keep giving Pokemon a hard time. Please elaborate on the list too.
@@ZanderBander Here's the problem. The fact that the only way you can see quality in the game is by comparing it to past iterations on much weaker consoles (because comparing it to other games on the exact same console for the exact same price is, apparently, too high a standard) proves that the game is already off to a bad start as far as quality goes.
Next thing is those attack animations are not what anybody is talking about. Those are particle effects. The actual *animations* are the same as they've always been for pretty much all returning pokémon shown so far.
Next thing is you just admitted the developers cannot put the proper resources into the game, which is an admission to a lack of quality. Just because I know why something is lackluster doesn't mean I have to excuse it and still pay full price. I imagine you wouldn't do that for anything wise EXCEPT Pokémon because of brand recognition.
People keep giving Pokémon a hard time because it dared to charge us between $60 - $120 when we see games coming out around the same time that have been advertised much better and appear to be of a higher quality. The game also shadily revealed that were removing features during a situation that a limited amount of people were expected to see. Case in point, nobody in Japan even knew the dex was being slashed (and likely the removal of mega evolution and Z-moves) until they saw it mentioned in social media by Americans. This information is still only available on social media (and not the official ones, either) and news blogs, rather than the official site.
On top of all that, they're doing scummy pre-order bonuses to try and get kids to spend $120 just to obtain either normal pokémon they'd otherwise obtain anyway, 12 QUICK BALLS, or a shiny necrozma that may not even BE in the game (and children may not even KNOW that because they haven't officially announced that yet). On top of even THAT, Pokémon directly advertised Home to transfer pokémon from past games to SwSh, yet they only mentioned the limitations on a Nintendo conference video at the very end.
With that said, they claimed the reason for the removal was to improve animations (their words were "expressive", not particle effects) and to balance the game. They later tried to say it was to give more pokémon a chance to shine, or that the removed pokémon simply don't WANT to go to Galar. Then they claimed it was because of optimization issues with transferring the models. Now, according to someone who claimed to have asked them directly, they're claiming they simply ran out of time to finish everything. Now, there's two things about that. First, nobody should be defending a full priced product that is admittedly unfinished. Second, this flies in the face of their claim that they CHOSE to create a roster for every future game.
Basically, on top of all the defenses for issues being that the game is just unfinished or has to be bad, the company is being extremely shady during their move to console. The least they could do is reduce the price or promise later patches, but they're barely even responding. They're just telling us, essentially, that we should just trust them because they know what they're doing when we have EXPERIENCED them cutting corners and they have excused even THAT with intentionally limiting content/slacking on community requested features because they think our attention spans are too short to focus on a challenging game.
So not only will the previous stuff, but they've ADMITTED they intentionally make higher priced games shorter. So their most expensive game yet (ignoring the obviously mediocre predecessors that were the same price) should be expected to be short and underwhelming.
So, basically, there's pretty much no reason outside of brand recognition to even be excited for these games for many people.

Afro you have to pass chapter one, the combat evolved you get more combo and ability. It's like a RPG, you did not even past the tutorial lol smh. Play the game man, it's on par with Nier automata trust me.

Who else is happy that Afro is uploadin regularly also it’s a motha freakin jojo reference.
You got a lot of combos you can do with each weapon, it depends on your timing, pauses, amount of presses, if you hold the attack, if you’re in the air or on the ground, and the directions you input with the joystick (like 360 rotation or back to forward and then an attack) and you get soooo much more for options, combos, and powers with each mission, I highly suggest you come back to this game. It’s honestly one of my favorite in its genre, and one of the most thought out and content filled games I’ve seen in a while
Once you get the sync combos it’s just 👌

I was soo disappointed with the combat at first too... but then i kept playing.

If works like most other platinum games, or most action games in general, you'll get more combos as you progress.
I'm thinking about getting this since I like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta.
You should 100% get it trust me once he does another episode or 2. He will be praising the combat the first 2 missions are wack after that you unlock combos and skills etc its awesome.
I'm sure someone else has already explained this, but you can upgrade your X Baton at a spot near the training room.
The first few levels give you more inputs, including forward-back, 360 and a charge attack that applies to all your weapons, giving more combat variety.
Each Legion can eventually learn skills to gain the same attack inputs in the Legion Learning menu.
That and the addition of more Legions and their unique attacks, skills and special abilities makes the combat significantly more accessible and engaging.
You also unlock Synch Attacks in the next mission or two, which expands all of your combos and even your dodge with unique attacks together with your Legion.

The game starts out with not many combos but once you get to the part where he has full control over his legion the combos are literally insane and so much variety but I loved the game even before I got to that part and you can even collect other legions with different abilities and different combos and you can even link a combo with some legions. Would have to say this game is one of my fav games on switch

Keep playing afro. Your main combos for the baton and gun become drastically longer, faster, and smoother after the next mission. Dodging becomes fast and fluid and not sluggish at all. Also you get to do synchronized attacks with your legion, basically combing together with your legion at the same time. Then you unlocks upgrade and active skills for your legions.
I definitely wanna see you play more of this

You've probably already realized this, but combat gets a shit ton better after you get a certain powerup in the first few hours. I had the exact same reaction at first, felt combat was extremely basic, very boring, wrote a rant about it, and then got about 4 or 5 hours in and loved it because of how much its expanded by the powerup you obtain.

There comes a point a little further in where you get a power-up and it gets to the REAL Platinum flashy-combo action, don’t worry.
I just wish they’d given a bit of a sneak peek of that sooner into the game to keep people from dropping it.
