  • In this episode of Trooper Lu TV, Justin Chisholm reviews the Yamaha Super Tenere XT1200Z. This is no ordinary Super Tenere; we’ve put our stamp on this adventure bike and put it through it’s paces in the real world.
    We talk about the features and benefits inherent in the model - both good and bad - and give demonstrations showing the effectiveness of the ABS and Traction Control systems on the Super Tenere.
    In the bush, the Super Tenere is tested in tough conditions and it shows just how capable of an adventure bike it really is.
    The parts and modifications list we have fitted to the Super Tenere are as below; prices of course are available by calling or emailing us at the shop - see our website for contact details - trooperlu.com.au

    I brought the 2010 model 1.5 yrs ago. Its a fantastic road bike as well. The suspension just soaks up everything and makes for a very pleasant ride.
    Its great on gravel roads too. You can get very aggressive in the gravel and it just handles it easily.
    Ive been riding 53 years now, mostly tar , but now because of bikes like this i can go down any gravel road, which is just brilliant.
    A fantastic motorcycle .

    And this is why I named my bike Matilda when I bought her in 2011: the Aussies gave the bike glowing reviews. This side (in South Africa) the bike was constantly being bashed by the BMW fanboy army. Give credit where credit is due and fair is fair seems to be the Australian way.

    I did a 300 miles trip on the day I got it as it was far from me. 5,5 hours in the saddle and all I got out of it was a bit of bum pain but that's normal sitting for 5 hours anyways... and even that was gone in almost 2 minutes after I got off the bike.
    My dream bike lived up to all the hopes I had for it!
    The standard wind shield on the '11 model in its tallest setting is baaaaad for a guy like me - 6'4"- as all the air hits the visor... need to get a screen extension for this bike if you're this tall. - I had mine from my 660 Tenere when I rode the bike back home - .
    Managed to get 50mpg out of it at the speed of 80mph.
    Don't forget that this guy has 6 gears so use it!
    I don't feel the need for cruise control thx to the fly-by-wire throttle, so if it is not standard on newer models from the '11 then might should skip it, as it doesn't require any effort to keep it at a constant speed as you have to keep your hand somewhere anyway...
    I do 20mph@2500rpm in 2nd, 30 in 3rd same rpm, 40 @2200rpm in 5th, 80 @4000rpm in 6th, 90mph comes at about 4500rpm...
    If you want a twin exhaust on it , look up NONE exhaust here on YT. Costs about £870.
    It feels great even while filtering through traffic between cars.

    Adding a 3-port solenoid and tee to the brake lines to bypass the ABS solenoid would be a better way to disable ABS (on any bike that you needed to remove ABS via switch). You'll still hear the ABS solenoid go nuts, but it wont effect braking.

  • @falconiusazurius5572

    On a minor point: hit the back brake first and then the front in order to bypass the ABS. Believe me, in a tight spot doing this is much easier than finding and flipping a switch on the handle bar.

    • @TheGeoShocker
      @TheGeoShocker 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Falconius Azurius so basically no need for a switch since you can still slide the rear wheel intentionally that way, right?

    • @alejogs500
      @alejogs500 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hitting the rear brake first does not disable the abs, it just bypass the combinated braking system.

    Sorry folks, which fuse are you pulling out with the switch on the handlebar? There are three under the right side panel: one of them near the fuel tank (ABS motor), the other two inside the fuse box, one for the solenoid and another for the ABS Control Unit.

      A M all ktm are lighter and more powerful wich will make them better for off-road purposes compared with tenere but significant huge plus for this bike will be lower running cost and totally different reliability when there will be some mileage on and some years passed, it is everyone own choice to make anyway 😉

    Looking for my first bike. I can't understand why Yamaha would not include a ABS switch like other manufacturers do. Maybe you could help me out with the why? I am also concerned about the weight of the bike, if I am by myself and I tip it over will I be able to pick it up, especially with gear on it? These are my major concerns about this bike but I heard that it is tough and reliable and it undercuts BMW, Triumph and KTM. Your input is appreciated. Thanks

    • @Adventure-Outdoors
      @Adventure-Outdoors 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you press the rear brake first on the XT1200 it acts independently, I find it easy to stop in the gravel. If you pull the front brake first, then the UBS (unified braking system) kicks in and the ABS is activated, which is great on the road. I doubt anyone would grab a handful of front brake in the gravel on a non-ABS bike, otherwise the front end will slip, so you are likely to hit the rear first, in this respect, the XT1200 operates like a non ABS bike in the dirt.......just don't grab the front brake! Hope this helps.

    If the abs breaks less efficient on a slippery surface, then ABS is simply bad.

    • @alejogs500
