How tf does carl have less than 50k subs? He's low key an amazing father figure for the many people who didnt have a dad to talk about manly stuff like boots, cars and axes. I really seriously truly appreciate all the effort that goes into these videos!
Saw these and was reminded of the criticism received from the UK military following the Falklands war. Soldiers suffered due to failure of what was then the standard leather based military boot. In the Falklands conditions were continually cold, wet and muddy and some troops had suffered from trench foot. I was in the leather industry and we were told that Special Forces soldiers had fared much better since they had bought themselves boots from either Sweden or Norway. In fact they were composite boots like the Bean Boot but with a heavier thread pattern sole.
Best boots ever for all the reasons described. I’m on my second pair. Quick tip: I keep mine in the trunk of my car when I anticipate bad weather and have them laced with Camper Peu elastic laces for easy slip on / slip off. I find that these boots do just as well for me without having to tightly tie them, because of the wide opening and gusseted tongue. And so the elastic laces are convenient and work well. Great review!
I totally agree! As a student on a college campus, being able to walk through snow and slush every day in these without batting an eye is seriously the best!
I have the unlined 6 inch and it is my go to for sloppy weather. Add some good thick socks and it can go well in to winter as well. A classic that is worth the money.
Came for the Bean Boot review, stayed to hear Carl say “put together cute outfits” 🤣 Great summary of the Bean Boot! I love mine; owned my current pair for 6+ years at this point and always look forward to wearing them when it’s rainy out. The soles, surprisingly, are still a bit slippery, even after owning them this long. The Sorel homage’s sole looks pretty legit (and grippy)
I'm from Rhode Island, and I've got strong roots in Maine, several family members actually work at LL Bean, so I've been in these boots all my life! I just cleaned and conditioned my flannel/thinsulate ones for the coming season. Most people in my family have a pair
You need to write blog articles for Art of Manliness. You are just the perfect model for them and I feel like you could really add to the blog. Keep up the good work and hope you get more subscribers cause you deserve them.
So Cal here. I have a pair and so does my daughter (JR in HS). The can wear rain boots when it rains, and she says while everyone wears Hunters, she gets compliments on her Beans.
Grew up in Jersey had bean boots or knock off's. Now as an adult in SOCAL I wear them when I know the footing will be wet. Dog parks, swampy river park areas etc. Love em!
As a Brit these to me epitomize American outdoors/wilderness activities along with a Pendleton Shirt. I don’t own a pair of the Boots but I do proudly own a vintage LL Bean field watch made by Hamilton and love wearing it. The boots would be perfect for the winter weather fast approaching here in Austria.
Firstly, I just found your channel and it’s awesome! Secondly, I’ve had a pair or Bean Boots for going on 2 years, men’s 8” Gore-Tex and Thinsulate model, and they are flawless until it gets genuinely cold out. At about -5 F and colder they’re not very warm, even with thick socks, and you have to keep moving to avoid the cold. Even standing in line for 20 mins let’s the cold creep in. This is mostly due to the cold radiating up from the sole and lack of insulation in the toe. I did add some LL Bean sheep skin (Sterling wool) liners 2 weeks ago, so we’ll see how they do this winter. That being said, they’re the ideal bad weather boot here in NE Ohio until it gets down to -5 F or colder.
the maine hunting shoe was used in WWII, a timeless classic.. a more styling alternative to the British Wellie, this is the best boot for trudging about slush and muck. perfect.
Been thinking about picking up one of the lined versions. Definitely an iconic boot. Like other people said I've heard their quality isn't what it was but I take that with a grain of salt because you hear that old line, "it's not what it used to be!" About every brand that's been around a while.
I am the youngest of four kids. I grew up in New England. I would get these as “hand me downs” from my older siblings. By the time they got to me they were on their fourth set of feet, and they still wore like iron.
LOVE these boots working in the yard. Dug out a tree stump in the mud after a rain this week - 100% dry socks. I also took off a pair of AE Higgins Mill to slip on the Bean boots, and I had forgot how comfortable they are. I will say though, they're terrible on ice and slippery surfaces. Full snow is fine but I'd personally avoid if you're going to encounter ice.
I’ve still got the pair from when I was 16 and they were trendy in high school In south Alabama. I wear them for the occasional snows here in Charlotte. I gave them new life by oiling them up with some red wing boot oil. I expect they will outlive me because I only wear them for specific conditions that aren’t too frequent here in the south. Great review thanks Carl.
Macca95 on my way to work earlier this year ( winter ) l spied a woman wearing a blue pair of LL Bean boots walking her dog across Nepean Highway in Mentone , I can only assume the park she was heading towards had wet grass . Iv never wore mine in the burbs but come winter I think they will be my go too beach walking boots .
Just got an 8" and 10" off Ebay in great shape for like 104 total. They're both vintage which is awesome! Both the leather and rubber are in great shape for being older. I'm pretty excited for them to come in. Just gotta hope they fit. Been having a hard time finding a pair that fit good. Hoping these vintage do the job
Love that you covered these, I have Made in England Doc Marten 1460s, they were my first boot purchase (my own money), and I still look forward to Bean Boot season over wearing those. They just fit perfectly with my EEE wide feet due to the rubber's flexible structure and have saved me in constant wet situations. I only started recently applying ArmourAll to them, found out L.L. Bean recommends this themselves, and the boots have been keeping up their strength and breaking in so well that they are my best boots so far, still need Red Wing MocToes and Timberlands to round out the Legendary Boot collection but the only boots I see possibly rivaling the Bean Boots are the MocToes and I am fine with that.
Installing a leather insole helped a lot with the sweaty feet and took care of odders. It also provided a good inner foot traction of my feet as the leather took the shape.
I do have the 8 inch Gore-Tex pair? The liners you can actually pull mostly out of the boot and dry them feasibly as compared to what most people would think that they are stuck inside the boot. You can literally pull the liner out and dry it off overnight plus? It’s not as bad as you say it is (I have the Gore-Tex insulated ones)
I’ve always said I’ll get me a pair the last 5 years and never do 🤦🏻♂️. Maybe next year i will since I am still beating up my timberland boots. Great video Carl
I have a pair of cheap Tommy Hilfiger knockoffs that suck, after this vid I’m gonna go upgrade and get the real deal. Thanks for the info Carl great vid!
I do.. and always will. But I agree, they are not an everyday boot. Especially if you are on your feet all day. Never really had the drying issue but could picture it happening very easily. Being a New Englander.. Hand Made in Maine is a must have!!!
Hey Carl! Was wondering when are you gonna make or post pictures of those badass boots? I just got a pair of Taylor Stitch Suede boots and wanna see how yours look after this time before I go through with it
I still hunt in my bean boots up until below freezing temps. super durable and comfortable. had the same pair a couple years, and bean will replace the lowers with your broken in leather uppers if needed. an american classic
Another great review Carl. Unfortunately that tiny little heel worries me and I need a little more support in the Utah mountains. Once you go Zamberlan (Vioz) , there's just no going back. That lifetime warranty was good while it lasted..
Bought a pair of these three years ago and am shocked by all the glowing reviews. They look great but the stitching is very light weight and not designed for serious outdoor use. IMHO this is more of a hipster boot.
Currently trying to decide between these or an insulated version and the Bean PAC/Snow boots or a set of Bogs boots for New England snow shoveling footwear. Thoughts?
Always thought they were ugly by themselves, but when put with the appropriate outerwear they don’t look out of place. As for the odd forward heel placement, reminds me of the packer heels from Nicks, White’s, etc. which help keep the heel Less clunky and improves walking gait.
Sizing can be difficult... most people will need to order a size down from their normal shoe size. Width wise, the regular Bean Boot is a medium-wide size that is designed to be worn with at least medium duty or heavy duty socks. If you order lined Bean Boots (I have the full GoreTex lined version for the cold alpine winters) you'll almost certainly need to get the wide width and order either a size down or your typical boot size since the quilted style lining will take a little room from all dimensions in the boot. Great boots overall, and I'd really recommend them.
If you're looking for a proper pac boot you should check out Schnee's. Made in montana for elk hunting. They're a similar form factor to the bean boots but fully recraftable. I would say that the Schnee's Hunter is the Nick's Americana to LL Bean's Red Wing Iron Ranger
Own 4 pair. Bean actually markets two types of their LL Boots: Maine Hunting Shoes, and Bean Boots. MHS are the original and typically are worn by hunters in the field, and the Bean Boots are for those who want to wear them all day and on hard surfaces. Really think LL Bean is in a precarious situation right now in that they're showing the signs of a coming sellout/decline: increased importing, more frequent sales. They would benefit from some kind of heritage line for enthusiasts.
I have 5 different pairs (various heights, uninsulated, thinsulate lined, etc). Can't count how many pairs I've had in my life (easily 20-25, I'm in my late 60s), and I know there will be more! Make sure you wear them with mid-heavy weight socks.
Parents first choice for kids? You really know how to sell boots to men. Of course I own a pair lol. Since you own several pairs, would be nice to see your before/after on a re-sole job from LL Bean.
Man, I have one of these and daily them for four years. Now, I'm looking for a how-to to resole them, because I can't find any retailer in my country and sending it abroad is too much money.
I dont like the design, but I did purchase Nike duckboots last year and theyre amazing for the winter months. Super easy to clean, keeps feest warm as hell
Could you do a review of the doc marten 1460 since you mentioned how they were legendary, that and I would love to see your perspective and if their worth the money or not
no, they're not really worth it, classic yes, but in all reality you can do much MUCH better (bad fit, poor leather, soles wear out fast, over priced for what you get) .I've owned ~ 5 pairs and ill never buy another after elevating to more quality footwear.( red wings, nicks, etc) . I'd be curious to hear Carl's perspective though..
Ive noticed my feet get really really smelly after wearing these boots after a while unlike a pair of traditional leather boots. I have a feeling thats because the rubber doesnt breathe but I still think they are amazing. Definately worth it when I walk around in the woods where I live.
Lucas Kellis Use talcum powder in your bare feet, and a active carbon insolehelps a lot. Dont forget the hygiene, changing socks and clean feet on a daily basis is paramount
Im from southern ontario, big fan of new england products and style but the gap between the true heel and where the heel starts on the sole has always put me off from buying a pair
I’ve heard varying things about LL Beans quality as of late. In particular the duck boots and now that they only warranty their products for 1 year. They do say they will consider returns after a year, but I haven’t heard good things.
I've heard this too, but from what I understand it's about people abusing their generous return policy more than anything else. Of course thats just hearsay.
This is only because people would return LL Bean items from the 70s like a jerk and expect a full refund. I can attest to the fact their boots are still quality.
These boots will last you a long time, as they are very durable. But? I would suggest adding better insoles, as there are no midsoles in these boots whatsoever… Rose Anvil on TH-cam cuts them in half. They DO have a small metal shank at least lol. As long as you get better insoles? I wear mine on the pavement all the time, and they will be fine plus last a while.
These boots are classics, where great and many of my family members loved them. The company sold out now though and does not have the lifetime warranty anymore. And quailty will drop fast now, we will see in the next couple years.
These may be well made, but they are shockingly uncomfortable! I have tried them on at the Bean store, and they are stiff and badly fitting. I like my feet more pampered than that!
Hi Carl, I always look forward to your great videos. Since you're in New England you should check out Origin Maine (originmaine.com/). I really think you'll like their boots and jeans. Everything is made in the USA with USA origin materials.
Bro! First off, I LOVE that you have The Stig in your name and picture. Old school Top Gear was the best! Secondly, I have a bunch of stuff on order from them for a future video!
@@CarlMurawski Old School Top Gear was the best. That's a picture of me back in the day from when I used to race. I think you'll really like Origin's stuff. I recently got a pair of boots and they're very comfortable right out of the box. Their jeans and shorts take a little breaking in but once there, they're the most comfortable nonrestrictive I've worn. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing what you think.
I had these growing up off and on throughout the years and recently bought a pair, returned that pair, bought another, and again returned them. Why? The craftsmanship has gone completely down the drain and there was glue smears all over them, leather stitches loose, leather stitches way out of alignment and leaving gaps, one pair had an eyelet completely missing, etc. Haven't even considered ordering another pair.
Yeah! I was really, really sad because they are so comfortable and last for ages when built properly. I luckily have a store near me and might try again in person after the holiday rush.
Boondoggle there are tons of different styles. They have dark brown, colors, bison, even suede. If you don’t like this classic brown, there are other options.

A must have! Bean boots and Barbour waxed coat. That's pure New England.

I have a LLBean shirt and boots they do pretty well but my boots got holes in them when I went hunting from the thorns.

Jeeper120 I went a full size down. I wear 12 in dress shoes and some boots, 11 in Bean.

These boots will last you a long time, as they are very durable. But? I would suggest adding better insoles, as there are no midsoles in these boots whatsoever…
Rose Anvil on TH-cam cuts them in half. They DO have a small metal shank at least lol. As long as you get better insoles? I wear mine on the pavement all the time, and they will be fine plus last a while.
Never heard of them not sure if they exist in the Southern Hemisphere
I can't decide if this boot is ugly or cool.
Krunoslav Kovacec cool.
These boots are classics, where great and many of my family members loved them. The company sold out now though and does not have the lifetime warranty anymore. And quailty will drop fast now, we will see in the next couple years.
Carl could sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman in white gloves
I like timberlands more
These may be well made, but they are shockingly uncomfortable!
Jeez i hate how those boots look so damm much.
Thats very interesting, someone else in the comments mentioned their quality slipping recently. I hope they turn things around!
Yeah! I was really, really sad because they are so comfortable and last for ages when built properly. I luckily have a store near me and might try again in person after the holiday rush.
Not to offend but I fr hate these boots
Hahaha, no worries! Plenty of people do
The leather upper on the LL Bean boot looks cheap and nasty.
Boondoggle there are tons of different styles. They have dark brown, colors, bison, even suede. If you don’t like this classic brown, there are other options.
