Launceston (/ˈlɒnsɛstən/ (audio speaker iconlisten)) is a city in the north of Tasmania, Australia, at the confluence of the North Esk and South Esk rivers where they become the Tamar River (kanamaluka). Launceston has a population of 110,472 in the significant urban area (2020). Launceston is the second most populous city in Tasmania after the state capital, Hobart, As of 2020, Launceston is the 17th largest city in Australia. Launceston is fourth-largest inland city and the ninth-largest non-capital city in Australia. Launceston is the most liveable regional city,[10] and was one of the most popular regional cities to move to in Australia from 2020 to 2021. Launceston won the Australian town of the year in 2022.
Settled by Europeans in March 1806, Launceston is one of Australia's oldest cities and it has many historic buildings. Like many places in Australia, it was named after a town in the United Kingdom - in this case, Launceston, Cornwall. Launceston also had the first use of anaesthetic in the Southern Hemisphere, it was the first Australian city to have underground sewers, and it was the first Australian city to be lit by hydroelectricity. The city has a maritime climate with four distinct seasons and is appreciably warmer than the south of the island during summer. Local government is split between the City of Launceston and the Meander Valley and West Tamar Councils.

This is a very interesting city, it feels like a bunch of small town downtowns strung together 🤔

Well, this could be for a few reasons.
Launnie (nickname) used to be quite a major city (relative in Australia), and it represents the only counterweight city in an Australian state.
Most Australian states have one 'primate' city (eg, New South Wales has one massive city, Sydney) -- but Tasmania has two. Hobart with 230k and Launnie with 110k, but also a bunch of larger towns nearby (like Devonport with 30k).
Launnie was a centre for the northern economy, with railways from the north-east carrying gold and coal passing through, making it possibly the 8th largest city in the country in the 20th century (now it's in the 20s ranking).
It was founded just a bit after Hobart (nipaluna) which is the 2nd oldest city in Australia after Sydney. Melbourne (currently the 2nd city) was founded from an expedition near Launnie.
The rest comes down to urban design. With prosperity a few interesting buildings get built to keep up with demand, as an organic city does.
You can even see a few 'pioneer'-type buildings which are much taller than the average, demonstrating a looking forward to Launnie becoming an even bigger city as other buildings would rise to match that height.
But then you get Australia's rubbish urban design policies (which we got from the US) that basically stopped densification (even if growth had slowed) for sprawl, also cutting the trams.
Now we're onto the next chapter, which will require a sensitive approach to growth, including less car-dependence, but first we need to abolish some Euclidean zoning and stuff that keeps habitable rooms above shops empty for no reason. Anyway, that's that -- it's a snapshot of a city in one stage of growth.

Am I wrong or this city seems more lively and beautiful than Hobart?
