  • Welcome to Training Tuesday on a special Monday because its my mom's birthday, Happy Birthday to my mom, Carol Torrini, June 17, 2024. I just finished some simple training sessions with a couple Bredl's Pythons and a few of my Liasis (Savu Pythons, Dunn's Python, Water Python). Everyone did really well.
I target train to be able to communicate teo the snakes where I would like them to be or indicate something I would like them to do like come out of hiding, load up in a carrier, shift in and out of their habitat, station on a scale or someplace else, recall from an exercise space, etc. This is operant conditioning, earning reinforcement (food) is contingent on performing a behavior first. I have a Step by Step Target Training playlist if you want to start teaching your snake or other animal this type of targeting. I also teach courses and do private coaching via my Patreon, www.Patron.com/BehaviorEducation.
You may also use the target simply as a signal that food is available, here is a video about using the target to signal food which is classical conditioning, it doesn't matter what the snake does or how they behave, you are just letting them know that food is coming: • Teach Your Snake This!
Thanks for watching and learning. Please remember to always be kind and love your animals,
    Lori

    Great video!
Do you need to reinforce their behaviour with food every time using the targets?

Yes. When using targets ti direct behavior they should be on a continuous reinforcement schedule. You want ti reinforce each time. You can pair different targets with different reinforcers so one target may be paired with food and another target with something else. The reinforcers I use most frequently are food and freedom from confinement so the snakes learn that one target means the opportunity to earn food and another target means the opportunity to come out of their enclosure and feee roam, etc.
