El Deguello at The Alamo, ft. Ron Lawrence Trumpet

  • March 6th is the anniversary of the final assault on the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. To honor those who lost their lives on that day in 1836, we put together a short music video. The music chosen to record for the video is “El Degüello.” The first tune is the original, historical Spanish bugle call used to commence the battle. The second melody is the tune composed by Dmitri Tiomkin for use in the John Wayne movies “The Alamo’’ and “Rio Bravo.” The music, along with the images of the battle and its aftermath, combine to leave a lasting impression of the violence that occurred that dark day in March 1836.

My son, on his mother's side of the family, has an ancestor who fought in Santa Ana's Army at the Alamo. He was wounded there, and died of
his wounds a couple of months later.

What (actually) happened may be disputed for many years to come, what we CAN agree on is that the Texan Defenders held as long as they could and that they took a hell of a lot of Santa Anna's troops with them.

Even where military suicide information existed, the causal relationship between the Civil War and suicide received little attention, even though Army
Surgeons arguably compiled some of the best statistics of the era. The Union Army maintained a fairly elaborate system requiring “the senior medical officer of each hospital, post, regiment or detachment, to make monthly, to the Medical Director, and quarterly to the Surgeon General a report of Sick and Wounded, of Deaths and of Discharges…” During the war years from 1861 through 1865, the Union Army reported on suicides. For the vast majority of these cases, the Army
Surgeon only listed the name, military unit, and cause of research

There are other sources that also state that it was played. Certainly I was not present to have personally heard the tune played, but authoritative researchers have followed evidence, leading them to the same conclusion. It's always going to be somewhere in the middle between what the two sides of a battle reported about each other's losses.
Honestly, the damage sustained to Santa Anna's army had little to do with his Army's defeat. Sam Houston outsmarted him and wore his army down. By the time the battle of San Jacinto was fought, his army was exhausted, split, and devoid of heavy artillery pieces which had been abandoned in order to keep up with the Texan Army. The importance of the Alamo is less so about enemy casualties and more so about the time took taking it.
