#12 for me is Louie Bellson: Jazz/Big Band drummer credited with developing the double bass drumming style that many of the best drummers have followed up to today. Louie played with many of the top stars of his day including: Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Louie Armstrong, James Brown, Tony Bennet, and many more.
12. Vinnie Colaiuta - If it was just chops. he'd be top 2 or 3. The guy is a whirlwind. Album picks are Chick Corea Akoustic Band - Live From the Blue Note Tokyo, Jakob Magnusson - Time Zone, and Krysztof Herdzin - Kingdom of the Ants. Track pick is Soulgrass by Bill Evans
George knows...Vinnie is bottom line -- mind blowing. Agree, on chops he's only rivaled by a few. His groove and pocket in pop songs are brilliant - thinking Ten Summoner's Tales or that Gino Vannelli record. He plays ALL genres at the highest level of tastiness and professionalism which makes him cream of the crop. Fun to listen to in interviews too. Super cool dude. Look for my pick - session ace Jim Gordon...never overplayed, always played for the song but had all the chops if/when needed.
Matt Cameron from Soundgarden Superunknown is a top 5 album for me. Favorite tracks displaying his command of creating grooves and fills as well as tackling odd time structures include: Spoonman Outshined Face Pollution Never the Machine Forever
12. Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, The Pineapple Thief, King Crimson) Porcupine Tree - In Absentia Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet Porcupine Tree - Closure/Continuation Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize

In no particular order, my pick of the day is Peter Criss from KISS. I think think Peter was probably my first drum "hero." I enjoyed his style and I think his jazzy background influenced that. I'm not a drummer, so I'm not going to attempt to get technical, but some guys I enjoy more than others. A couple of my favorite tracks are Watchin' You and Room Service. 12. Peter Criss - KISS (Black Diamond / Room Service) 13. Frank Beard - ZZ Top (Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings / Heard It On the X) 14. Mitch Mitchell** - The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Fire / Freedom) 15. Bobby ("The Blotz") Blotzer - Ratt (Back for More / City to City) 16. Troy Lucketta - Tesla (2 Late 4 Love / Edison's Medicine) 17. Ian Paice** - Deep Purple (Burn / Hard Lovin' Man) 18. James Kottak - Kingdom Come/Scorpions (Pushin' Hard ; Hour 1) 29. Artimus Pyle - Lynryd Skynyrd (Saturday Night Special ; Gimme Back My Bulletins 30. Andy Parker - UFO (Doctor Doctor ; Rock Bottom)
Hi everyone, hope we're all well... On we go with pick #19 and a name I would certainly consider having in my top 3 or 4 were I doing this in favourite order rather than alphabetically. He came to prominence in the band he co-founded, went on to play in numerous side-projects and mini supergroups, and then left his parent band for a few years before, recently, rejoining their ranks. I give you the godfather of the prog metal drum-stool, Mr... MIKE PORTNOY of DREAM THEATER (and umpteen others - see list below!) 3 albums? 1 track? Phew, tough call, and all 4 could easily have come from his time in Dream Theater, but I've decided just to pick one from them and the rest from elsewhere. And even then, there was no space in my selections, however deserving, for the likes of TRANSATLANTIC, ADRENALINE MOB, NEAL MORSE, THE WINERY DOGS, OSI or LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT, or a nod to his guest slots with the likes of A7X (he plays on their "Nightmare" album, following the death of the band's original drummer, "The Rev"), JIM ARCH, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME et al... 3 Albums: • DREAM THEATER Metropolis Pt2... etc. • FLYING COLORS S/T • BIG ELF Into The Maelstrom Selected track: "God Of The Sun" by SONS OF APOLLO Looking forward to the new DT album in February, too!
I'm exhausted after reading that, thinking of how many hits smacks baps bops and kicks and crashes are involved in all that musical mayhem, My Good Man!
Fantastic choice, Pete. In no particular order: 12) Levon Helm - The Band Albums: Music From the Big Pink The Band Northern Lights - Southern Cross Songs: Up On Cripple Creek The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Ophelia The Weight 12) Levon Helm 13) Jason Bonham 14) Keith Moon 15) Nick Mason 16) Nicko McBrain 17) Tommy Aldridge 18) Max Weinberg 19) John Panozzo 20) Doug Clifford 21) Joey Kramer 22) Carmine Appice 23) Vinny Appice 24) Alex Van Halen 25) Ginger Baker 26) Roger Taylor 27) Kenny Aronoff 28) Steve Smith 29) Dylan Sevey 30) Jeff Porcaro
@@weirddebbiem1619 hi Debbie. We’ve done it again. Here’s another match for us. Also all three albums and three of your songs that you’ve posted. You have ten on your list that matches with mine and we’re back to three others that I haven’t posted yet. My list is up today.
@@melaniethurber5117 Hey Melanie! Yes, we did it again! I am looking forward to those three matches. I wonder how many matches we will have at the end of the month. Take care!
@ that’s going to be quite interesting to see what we end up with at the end up the month. With all these matches that are coming up. Did you look at my list that I put up today?
@melaniethurber5117 Yes, I looked at your list. A few of the drummers on your list will be on my Honorable Mentions list. Can't wait until tomorrow to see your pick for drummer.
@@weirddebbiem1619 I don’t know if you’ll have this pick. My pick tomorrow morning is a double pick. You might have one of these drummers. 🥁 A lot have been picking him. Also the other drummer too. It’s possible that you haven’t picked either of these guys yet.
Hey I got a match with Pete 🤠 Today's pick is Mr Bill bruford 1. Close to the edge 2. Continuing right into King crimson I did go with Lark's tongue in aspic 3. Anderson bruford wakeman and howe What's interesting about Bill is the fact that he played on so many yes solo guys outings when asked from John Anderson to Chris squires fish out of water to Steve Howe. Showing there weren't no hard feelings after close to the edge I'm going to have to go with the cinema show when he guest starred on Genesis seconds out in 1976 that is a fantastic performance to me
#12 Barriemore Barlow - Tull. Drumming records: THICK AS A BRICK; SONGS FROM THE WOOD; HEAVY HORSES. Fav feature of Mr. Barlow: NO LULLABY off of HEAVY HORSES; HUNTING GIRL off SONGS FROM THE WOOD a close second.
No.12…Terry Bozzio of Zappa,U.K,Missing Persons and others. He plays a melodic type drumming style. There’s bits of Jazz and Classical elements in Terry’s drumming. Many skilled fills and tight patterns make him one of the best. I don’t have a favorite drum part, because he’s done so many projects.
JOHN MARSHALL - SOFT MACHINE - Albums: Bundles, and the title track; Softs, One over the eight, and Six, Riff1. So hard to pick a favourite performance, but I'm going back to Six and not the drum solo, 5 from 13 but rather Gesolreut.
1. Neil Peart 🪦 - Rush 2. Taylor Hawkins 🪦- Foo Fighters 3. Butch Trucks🪦- Allman Brothers Band 4. Nicko McBrain - Pat Travers [2 first LPS]/Iron Maiden 5. Carmine Appice - listed by Peter on day#25 6. Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater/Neal Morse Band/Flying Colors/The Winery Dogs 7. Phil[ip] Collins (I don't like the singer but what a drummer, check his work in the jazz-fusion band Brand X in the '70s) 8. Paul Riddle - The Marshall Tucker Band 9. Keith Moon🪦- The Who 10. Jon Hiseman🪦- Colosseum (I & II) 11. Don Brewer - Grand Funk Railroad/Bob Seger 12. Matt Abts - Gov't Mule 13. Brian Downey - Thin Lizzy {listed by Peter} 14. John Bonham🪦- U know! 15. Mitch Mitchell🪦- Georgie Fame / Jimi Hendrix Experience 16. Michael Schrieve - Santana / HSAS & various collaborations 17. Nick D'Virgilio - Spock's Beard / Big Big Train 18. Thomas "Artimus" Pyle - Lynyrd Skynyrd / Artimus Pyle Band 19. Steve Gadd - various bands including A. DiMeola {live Tour de Force highly recommended} & Return To Forever B. Bruford coming soon, mandatory
Today's pick in no particular order is Terry Bozzio. Best albums are Frank Zappa-Zoot Allures, Frank Zappa-Sheik Yerbouti and U.K.-Danger Money. Best cut is "Wind Up Working In A Gas Station". Another great one is "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes" from Sheik. And, of course, his work with U.K. is dear to me featuring "Danger Money" and "Nothing To Lose". A very cool drummer and definitely a favorite.
Bobby Rondinelli Straight Between The Eyes- Rainbow Sign Of The Times- Axel Rudi Pell Lost XXIII- Axel Rudi Pell Performance: Forever Strong- Axel Rudi Pell
12. Vinnie Appice (Black Sabbath/Dio) * Holy Diver (1983) * Mob Rules (1981) * The Last in Line (1984) 13. Scott Rockenfield 14. Clive Burr 15. Chuck Biscuits 16. Scott Travis 17. Nicko McBrain 18. Alex Van Halen 19. Mikkey Dee 20. Ian Paice 21. Albert Bouchard 22. Keith Moon 23. Matt Cameron 24. Nick Menza 25. Carl Palmer 26. Phil Rudd 27. Simon Phillips 28. Brann Dailor 29. Ginger Baker 30. Terry Bozzio
Pick #12 - Nick Menza, Megadeth - If you held a clinic in what a professional heavy metal drummer should sound like and be able to do at the top of his game, Nick would be the teacher. RIP.
Number 12 is Keith Moon. You mention Moon to people and they know him for his antics, as much as for his playing. Trashing his drums at most gigs, blowing up the kit and deafening Pete Townshend on US TV, laying waste to hotel room after hotel room, his legendary alcohol consumption and his somewhat offensive behaviour (walking around the Golders Green area of London - a place with a very large Jewish community, dressed in a Nazi uniform), but he was thought of as a harmless loon. He wasn't harmless behind his kit. He battered the fertiliser out of his drums. His fills were outrageous and his playing in general was manic. However, everything he did, was to the benefit of the song. Even his mistakes were awesome - his early entry on Baba O'Riley made it one of the most memorable intros ever. Recommendations? Obviously, Tommy. Obviously Who's Next. His final album Who Are You is not to be sniffed at, either.
12. Bill Bruford was my choice for today too. Not keen on his snare sound, but a great technician. Close To The Edge, Larks Tongue In Aspic, One Of A Kind Perpetual Change (Yessongs)
My 12th favorite drummer (loosely ordered) is Roger Taylor A Night At The Opera (Queen - 1975) Jazz (Queen - 1978) Strange Frontier (1984) Full List: 30) Matt Cameron Badmotorfinger (Soundgarden - 1991) Backspacer (Pearl Jam - 2009) Dark Matter (Pearl Jam - 2024) 29) Dave Grohl No More Censorship (Scream - 1988) In Utero (Nirvana - 1993) Fumble (Scream - 1993) 28) Danny Seraphine Chicago Transit Authority (Chicago - 1969) Chicago III (Chicago - 1971) Chicago VII (Chicago - 1974) 27) Tommy Aldridge Crash And Burn (Pat Travers Band - 1980) Bark At The Moon (Ozzy Osbourne - 1983) Slip Of The Tongue (Whitesnake - 1989) 26) Colin “Cozy” Powell Jeff Beck Group (The Jeff Beck Group - 1972) Down To Earth (Rainbow - 1979) Slide It In (Whitesnake - 1984) 25) Simon Phillips Sin After Sin (Judas Priest - 1977) The Michael Schenker Group (MSG - 1980) The Buffalo Skinners (Big Country - 1993) 24) Alex Van Halen Van Halen (Van Halen - 1978) Van Halen II (Van Halen - 1979) 1984 (Van Halen - 1984) 23) Phil Rudd Highway To Hell (AC/DC - 1979) Back In Black (AC/DC - 1980) Flick Of The Switch (AC/DC - 1983) 22) Larry Mullen Jr. October (U2 - 1981) The Joshua Tree (U2 - 1987) Achtung Baby (U2 - 1991) 21) Gene Hoglan Darkness Descends (Dark Angel - 1986) Individual Thought Patterns (Death - 1993) Demonic (Testament - 1997) 20) Nicko McBrain Makin' Magic (Pat Travers - 1977) Powerslave (Iron Maiden - 1984) Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son (Iron Maiden - 1988) 19) Lars Ulrich Ride The Lightning (Metallica - 1984) Master Of Puppets (Metallica - 1986) And Justice For All (Metallica - 1988) 18) Gregg Bissonette Eat 'Em and Smile (David Lee Roth - 1986) The Extremist (Joe Satriani - 1992) No Substitutions: Live In Osaka (Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather - 2001) 17) Dave Lombardo Reign In Blood (Slayer - 1986) South Of Heaven (Slayer - 1988) The Gathering (Testament - 1999) 16) Bill Ward Sabotage (Black Sabbath - 1975) Heaven And Hell (Black Sabbath - 1980) Ward One: Along The Way (1990) 15) Clyde Stubblefield Say It Loud - I'm Black And I'm Proud (James Brown - 1969) Sex Machine (James Brown - 1970) Funky Drummer (Single) (James Brown - 1970) 14) Jim Keltner Takin' My Time (Bonnie Raitt - 1973) Shot Of Love (Bob Dylan - 1981) Mystery Girl (Roy Orbison - 1989) 13) Jeff Porcaro Larry Carlton (Larry Carlton - 1978) The Nightfly (Donald Fagen - 1982) Kingdom Of Desire (Toto - 1992) 12) Roger Taylor A Night At The Opera (Queen - 1975) Jazz (Queen - 1978) Strange Frontier (1984)
#12...Charlie Watts, The Rolling Stones. Behind the glitz and flash of Mick and Keith, Charlie has been the bedrock of the Stones' sound decade after decade until his passing in '21. I really like his use of toms on songs like Wild Horses and Moonlight Mile, just a tasty and appropriate drummer for every style the Stones embraced over the years. Hard to pick the best albums, and he had help with other percussionists on some albums, but I'll go with Let it Bleed, Beggars Banquet, and Sticky Fingers.
Pick# 12: Corky Laing: Mountain: "Climbing!" , released on Windfall Records in "70. "Nantucket Sleighride" on Windfall in in '71. "Avalanche" on Columbia/Windfall in '74. A Canadian drummer, Corky Laing and lead guitar/vocalist Leslie West alone have appeared on every Mountain LP Record Album release. Being a Canadian, Corky was determined to sneak in to the Bed-in For Peace being held by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in Montreal in '69. Using a fake press pass, only to lose his cool and immediately confess to the couple that he was a musician. They laughed and discussed his musical career for bit, John admired "his balls" for sneaking in and Corky later played for John's "Rock and Roll" album recorded in '75. "Rock and Roll" was basically made to satisfy a contractual obligation with one Morris Levy, whom some might remember for his surrealistic TV ads for Levy's bootleg of "Rock and Roll" featuring a strange black and white photo of John against a garish yellow and green background.
Great pick, Pete! My number 12 Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Steven Wilson, Paul Gilbert…) Albums: The Aristocrats - The Aristocrats (2011), Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) (2013), 4½ (2016) Track: Aristoclub (from The Aristocrats - Duck, 2024) 13 Aynsley Dunbar (John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Frank Zappa and the Mothers, David Bowie, Whitesnake…) 14 Dennis Chambers (Parliament-Funkadelic, John Scofield, Niacin) 15 Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore) 16 Virgil Donati (Derek Sherinian, Planet X, CAB…) 17 Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai…) 18 Stewart Copeland (Curved Air, The Police, Gizmodrome…) 19 Phil Collins (Genesis, Brand X) 20 Jon Hiseman (Colosseum (II), United Jazz + Rock Ensemble, John Mayall, Jack Bruce) 21 Pierre Moerlen (Gong, Mike Oldfield…) 22 Nick D’Virgilio (Spock’s Beard, Big Big Train…) 23 Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group…) 24 Jeff Porcaro (Toto, Steely Dan, Michael Jackson…) 25 Chris Maitland (Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, Kino…) 26 Narada Michael Walden (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Jeff Beck…) 27 Carl Palmer (ELP, Asia…) 28 John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) 29 Peter Erskine (Weather Report, Steps Ahead…) 30 Danny Carey (Tool)
Good afternoon (evening, night or morning), Pete. Another great SoT selection. Personal pick today? The English child actor and drummer John Graham "Mitch" Mitchell, likely best known as part of the trio called the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Have told the tale before (and likely will retell next month) my introduction to The Experience at age 11. One of Mitch's drumming heroes is said to be the jazz drummer Ronnie Stephenson. With Hendrix always going out into and beyond orbit on the guitar, the Experience needed a quality rhythm section to help tether it to ground for us earthlings. Mitch Mitchell was a tremendous part of that sound. The three albums? The studio albums of The Experience. Though the names those three albums - Are You Experienced; Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland are likely known by any reader, they are included here for any uninitiated listener. The song? Well, once the oft-mentioned older brother finally let me borrow and play his beloved Are You Experienced LP, the track that I kept replaying is my pick for the day - Manic Depression. Is it the best? Opinions may differ but it is always the first song that comes to mind when Mitch Mitchell's drumming enters my thoughts. Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to your next selection.
My picks for drummers today will be Three Don Brewer (Grand Funk Railroad), Bill Kreutzmann & Mickey Hart (the Grateful Dead), & Rod Morgenstein (the Dixie Dregs).🎶🥁🥁🥁🥁🎶

Hi Pete & everyone. Dave from London here. Terrific pick of yours; Bill comes up for me soon. My pick today is MICHAEL SHRIEVE, drummer in the classic line-up of Santana. Probably best to think of the drums & Latin percussion collectively, so hats off to the likes of Jose 'Chepito' Areas too. But Michael's technique and versatility shone through on these classic early albums. Albums (all Santana): Abraxas (1970); Santana III (1971); Welcome (1973). Showcase track: has to be Soul Sacrifice live, but rather than the iconic Woodstock performance, I'm going with Tanglewood 1970, mainly because Michael himself preferred it, and his solo here is quite phenomenal.
...and Michael Carabello is part of that fine drum/percussion team. Santana's debut, for my money, is one of the best debut albums, any genre. Shrieve also has some killer stuff with Jonas Hellborg. More outside than the Santana material. ;-)
My #12 pick was an American musician who was the drummer and a vocalist of the rock band Foo Fighters, sharing vocals with Dave Grohl. He joined the band in 1997, and remained the band's drummer until his sudden death in 2022. He recorded eight studio albums with Foo Fighters between 1999 and 2021.[1] Before joining the band, he was a touring drummer for Sass Jordan and Alanis Morissette, as well as the drummer of the progressive experimental band Sylvia. I'm talking about Taylor Hawkins. During his career, Hawkins used a variety of different brands, including Ludwig Drums, Tama Drums, and, most notably, Gretsch Drums, which he endorsed and played from 2005 until his death. He was also known to use Zildjian Cymbals. On March 25, 2022, Hawkins was in Bogotá, Colombia, where he was scheduled to perform with the Foo Fighters later that evening. After Hawkins complained of chest pains, emergency services were called up to his room at the Four Seasons Casa Medina hotel.[66] Health personnel arrived and found Hawkins unresponsive; they performed CPR, but he was declared dead at the scene, aged 50.[67][68] His cause of death was not immediately revealed.[69] It was reported that Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee was one of the last people to speak to Hawkins, just hours before his death, in a phone conversation to Hawkins' hotel room.[70][71] The following day, Colombian authorities announced that a preliminary urine toxicology test indicated that Hawkins had 10 substances in his system at the time of his death, including opioids, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and THC.[72][73][74] Colombia's National Institute of Forensic Medicine stated that they would "continue the medical studies to achieve total clarification of the events that led to the death of Taylor Hawkins", and the attorney general's office would continue to investigate his cause of death in a "timely manner".[72] A May 2022 article from Andy Greene and Kory Grow in Rolling Stone made the case that Hawkins was suffering from extreme exhaustion in the period leading up to his death, and allegedly asked that no more dates be added to the scheduled tour.[75] However, two of the interviewees, Chad Smith and Matt Cameron, have since disavowed the article, stating that they were quoted out of context and that their comments were misrepresented.[76] Noting that official autopsy results had not, at that time, been made public, the Green-Grow article went on to state that "his friends believe[d] he wasn't using hard drugs recreationally at the time of his death" and that the post-mortem forensics performed indicated that the mass of Hawkins' heart was "about double... normal size", raising the possibility that "it could have collapsed" apart from any contribution of drugs in his system. Albums- Wasting Light, There is Nothing Else To Lose and Echoes, Silence Patience & Grace. Song- Walk Despite not being included on the soundtrack, "Walk" can be heard in the background of the bar scene and in the end credits to the 2011 Marvel superhero film Thor. WWE used "Walk" to highlight Edge twice where it was first heard in a video package for his induction into the 2012 WWE Hall of Fame, and again at the conclusion of the WWE 24 documentary episode "Edge: The Second Mountain".(which this is the first time I hears this song)
Day 12 My pick today is Toto 1 Toto IV 2 Toto S/T 3 Hydra Drummer Jeff Porcaro Songs “Africa”, “Rosanna”, and “Hold the Line”. 30 Graeme Edge 29 Spencer Dryden 28 Max Weinberg 27 Alex Van Halen 26 Joey Karmer 25 Michael Shrieve 24 John Steel 23 Kenny Aronoff 22 Dennis Elliott 21 Roger Taylor 20 Doug Clifford 19 Mel Taylor/ Howie Johnson 18 Levon Helm 17 Don Henley 16 Nick Mason 15 Floyd Sneed 14 Stan Lynch/ Steve Ferrone 13 Steve Smith 12 Jeff Porcaro
Hullo Melanie. We match today! Listened to the most songs of all my picks to track down a favorite performance. Ended back at the first one I thought of, 'Rosanna'. Have a great day!
Day 12 pick is Michael Schrieve of Santana. Albums are Santanas debut. Abraxas and their Woodstock cd. Favorite songs are Soul Sacrifice. Evil Ways. Hope Your Feeling Better. And You Just Dont Care. And You Just Dont Care. s are Santana
Pete, your vocalizing of "Heart of the Sunrise" was good enough to get you blocked for coyright violation. Please be careful.....😉 Great pick, great series. Thanks.

My pick the infamous Jim Gordon - studio ace that was protegee of Hal Blaine - high-demand session man who played on dozens of radio popular hits most folks know - Played with Delany & Bonnie, Beach Boys, Mama's & Papa's, Harry Nilsson, Derek and the Dominoes, Traffic, Dave Mason, Gordon Lightfoot, Steely Dan, George Harrison. Alice Cooper...toured with Everly Bros in mid 60's and with Joe Cocker and the Mad Dogs & Englishmen band. His drum break in the song Apache has been sampled dozens of times - you've heard even if you think you haven't. Notable songs/records he's on - Rikki Don't Lose that Number Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - Traffic - entire record Sundown - Gordon Lightfoot Layla - entire record Pet Sounds and few other Beach Boys albums What is my Life - Harrison - All Things Must Pass - entire record You're so Vain - Carly Simon Wichita Lineman - Glen Campbell Jump into the Fire - Harry Nilsson - entire Nilsson Schmilsson album My Maria Midnight at the Oasis Classical Gas It Never Rains in Southern California - Albert Hammond Apache - famous sampled drum break Sadly he was an undiagnosed schizophrenic and heard voices in his head (of his mother) that drove him to eventually killing her in early 80's. Great book just released on his life. Webb in ATL
12- Stewart Copeland When I was 11 years old I saw the video for “Synchronicity” live on television. The drummer seemed to be plugged into 220W but without losing elegance. Then I realized that my older brother had the album “Synchronicity” by this band called The Police. The blonde drummer was Copeland. Eternal admiration. Love the drummer love your picks for albums. Also excellent choice with Heart of the Sunrise. Have always loved that intro especially when it quiets a little and is basically Bill on drums with Squires bass. Perfection! Thx Pete. 👍

12. Joey Kramer One of the rare drummers that stayed with the same band, that being the mighty Aerosmith. When I heard The intro he cranked for Walk this Way on the cafeteria speakers in middle school, I was mesmerized. Still one of my top 20 songs of all time; talking about a band hitting on all cylinders. He had the power and the finesse, and of course had to do the rhythm and blues James Brown stuff in the early gigs.
Gonna make a guess we won’t see any Mick Fleetwood, Stewart Copeland, or Ringo. Will we see John Bonham? Hmmmmmm…… 😂 Great pick today, love Bruford! 👍🏻
@weirddebbiem1619 thank you debbie. Even though I'm not doing my picks necessarily in order, there are some I've been holding back for the last half. Jeff's one of those. Have a nice day.
No particular order of preference for my 30 favourite drummers. My choice today is another one already nominated by a few SOT viewers previously. DENNIS ELLIOTT best known for his stint in Foreigner during their most successful mega platinum selling years. As Simon Bray so aptly put it on a recent UK Connection show about Foreigner, Dennis actually puts hooks into his drum licks. He's also very versatile, Foreigner requiring him to be able to play the hard hitting power drummer through to soft ballads, pop and even a touch of progressive rock in their early days. Dennis in fact has a background in jazz rock fusion and progressive music by playing with the band If. He's done rock with a horn section with the Roy Young Band and also was Hunter Ronson's first drummer. So a terrific varied resume for this sometimes under appreciated sticksman.
Today my pick #12 is Cozy Powell. Amazing drummer lost way too soon. 3 albums I’m picking are Rainbow Rising, Long live rock n roll, and down to earth. Song imo his best drum performance is Stargazer
Carl Palmer of ELP and Asia fame is my pick today! Going with the Self titled ELP album Brain Salad Surgery and Asias debut as my 3 favorite albums and my favorite song he drums on has to be Tank

12. Dale Crover (Melvins, Nirvana) The first thing I think of regarding the Melvins is the booming thuds of Dale Crover's drums the first time I heard Ozma (1989). His heavy style, which was fully formed by 1986, would become a big influence on noise rock, stoner and sludge metal and beyond. Aside from some drumless drone tracks, Crover plays a big part in defining the Melvins sound. "Honey Bucket." Melvins - Bullhead (991) Melvins - Houdini (1993) Melvins - Ozma (1989)
12. Jimmy Economou of BUFFALO. 1. Volcanic Rock 2. Only Want You For Your Body 3. Mother's Finest Song -- Pound of Flesh (HM's -- Freedom, Dune Messiah, Kings Cross Ladies, Taste It Don't Waste It and Be Alright).

@ I bet it is time to dress up like that for winter. My social worker said yesterday that they expected my not wanting to go Wednesdays anymore and my reason why.
Hi Gadget, think I gave the Buffalo Soldiers a listen a while back, think they were the Australian bunch? Though it was OK, passed the time, but didn't rush back fir more, if I remember... Hope all's well over there: we had snow today! All gone already...

Kevin Valentine has basically left music to become an Emmy Award winning sound mixer for television shows, including Better Call Saul, among others.
Richard Christy - Death, Control Denied, Iced Earth The Sound of Perseverance "Spirit Crusher" One of the fastest technical drummers in metal, check out Death live in Eindhoven 1998 and you may agree.
Pick number 12, band and their drummer from 1981 to 1987 and 1994 to 1997 that I am not really fond of, heavy metal/hard rock act pretty popular in Yugoslavia back in the day, but they used to express themselves through borrowed parts from the bands they liked. Nasko Budimlić of Divlje jagode, let say album Stakleni hotel 1981, song Autostop, Motori, an album from 1982, song of the same title, Labude, kad rata ne bude from 1994, song Zbog tebe draga.
Cindy Blackman Santana: Santana(Band) Lenny Kravitz(Band) Solo work. Lenny Kravitz 5, Give the Drummer Some(solo), Corazon(Santana), favorite song is Are You Gonna Go My Way, Lenny Kravitz.
My pick #12 is Matt Cameron ( Soundgarden ). Bill Bruford is an amazing drummer, but I just haven´t listened enough to his drumming to be able to put him on my list.
#12 Is Philippe Candryx From Canadian Avant-Garde Metal Band Unexpece Albums Are 2 "Fables Of The Sleepless Empire" 1 In A Flesh Aquarium Song Is Summoning Scenes
#12 This guy makes the list because he played along side a freak of Nature. Trilogy Tarkus Brain salad Surgery Performance Tarkus: A very nice accomplice for the freak of nature, especially during the organ section, he's really doing some amazing stuff. Cap off to players who can keep up with a genius.I Grew up on classical music. The Freak was a gateway to all the music I now live by. For anybody who saw him live "wow" the closest thing in regards to the virtuosic playing of Brahms and bach one could get. Emerson that is!
My Pick today was also Bill Bruford! Yes, King Crimson...Faves are Close to the Edge ( Of course) Fragile and Red with Crimson
Great pick 👏 he was on my list earlier in the month 👍
Vinnie's level in 1988 1992 with his Yamaha kit was unreal
Listen to the clinics he did
Matt Cameron from Soundgarden
Superunknown is a top 5 album for me. Favorite tracks displaying his command of creating grooves and fills as well as tackling odd time structures include:
Spoonman
Outshined
Face Pollution
Never the Machine Forever
No jesus christ pose?
@ can’t list them all. But yes, love his drumming on that too.
12. Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, The Pineapple Thief, King Crimson)
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet
Porcupine Tree - Closure/Continuation
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize
Excellent pick, Josh. I went with him a few days ago.

Wonderful pick. Coming up on my list. Maiden voyage is such a terrific musical feast. Emergency is well, something else.
What a drummer ! I loved the One of a Kind album, a fantastic mix of prog & fusion. Can't forget the Red album either. But all his work is great.
12. Peter Criss - KISS (Black Diamond / Room Service)

Same hero, here, hear,! StB
Great pick steven liked watchin you and black diamond also.
MIKE PORTNOY of DREAM THEATER (and umpteen others - see list below!)
3 albums?
3 Albums:
• DREAM THEATER Metropolis Pt2... etc.
• FLYING COLORS S/T
• BIG ELF Into The Maelstrom
Selected track:
"God Of The Sun" by SONS OF APOLLO
Looking forward to the new DT album in February, too!
Awesome pick Iain! Fantastic drummer, pretty prolific, to say the least...
Fantastic choice and article, Iain. Awesome picks for album and performance.
I'm exhausted after reading that, thinking of how many hits smacks baps bops and kicks and crashes are involved in all that musical mayhem, My Good Man!
Super pick, Iain. Yer man gets around! Great that he's back in DT.

12. Tommy aldridge. Great player. Did good stuff with Black oak arkansas but my fav work is on Diary of a madman. Song is Over the mountain

Can't beat it he's playing for the godfathers of metal, KB
Great pick 64 great story also
12. Bill Bruford was my choice for today too. Not keen on his snare sound, but a great technician.

Great pick peter one of the best timekeepers.
Being a Canadian, Corky was determined to sneak in
to the Bed-in For Peace being held by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in Montreal in '69.

#12 Tim "Herb" Alexander from Primus Fav albums Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda, and Tales from the Punchbowl.

@@gaiaeternal5131 hi Dave. Superb picks and article. I already had him posted.
Great pick Dave!
...and Michael Carabello is part of that fine drum/percussion team. Santana's debut, for my money, is one of the best debut albums, any genre.
Shrieve also has some killer stuff with Jonas Hellborg. More outside than the Santana material. ;-)

5. Mick Tucker
Yeah, Bill was/is a brilliant drummer.
Bruford is my #1
BB would be my number 1. So awesome for all the stuff he's done. So inventive.
After Hawkins complained of chest pains, emergency services were called up to his room at the Four Seasons Casa Medina hotel.[66] Health personnel arrived and found Hawkins unresponsive; they performed CPR, but he was declared dead at the scene, aged 50.[67][68] His cause of death was not immediately revealed.[69]
It was reported that Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee was one of the last people to speak to Hawkins, just hours before his death, in a phone conversation to Hawkins' hotel room.[70][71]
The following day, Colombian authorities announced that a preliminary urine toxicology test indicated that Hawkins had 10 substances in his system at the time of his death, including opioids, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and THC.[72][73][74]
Colombia's National Institute of Forensic Medicine stated that they would "continue the medical studies to achieve total clarification of the events that led to the death of Taylor Hawkins", and the attorney general's office would continue to investigate his cause of death in a "timely manner".[72]
A May 2022 article from Andy Greene and Kory Grow in Rolling Stone made the case that Hawkins was suffering from extreme exhaustion in the period leading up to his death, and allegedly asked that no more dates be added to the scheduled tour.[75] However, two of the interviewees, Chad Smith and Matt Cameron, have since disavowed the article, stating that they were quoted out of context and that their comments were misrepresented.[76] Noting that official autopsy results had not, at that time, been made public, the Green-Grow article went on to state that "his friends believe[d] he wasn't using hard drugs recreationally at the time of his death" and that the post-mortem forensics performed indicated that the mass of Hawkins' heart was "about double... normal size", raising the possibility that "it could have collapsed" apart from any contribution of drugs in his system.
Albums- Wasting Light, There is Nothing Else To Lose and Echoes, Silence Patience & Grace.
Song- Walk
Despite not being included on the soundtrack, "Walk" can be heard in the background of the bar scene and in the end credits to the 2011 Marvel superhero film Thor.
WWE used "Walk" to highlight Edge twice where it was first heard in a video package for his induction into the 2012 WWE Hall of Fame, and again at the conclusion of the WWE 24 documentary episode "Edge: The Second Mountain".(which this is the first time I hears this song)

Very cool pick Jerry.

12. Dale Crover (Melvins, Nirvana)
The first thing I think of regarding the Melvins is the booming thuds of Dale Crover's drums the first time I heard Ozma (1989). His heavy style, which was fully formed by 1986, would become a big influence on noise rock, stoner and sludge metal and beyond. Aside from some drumless drone tracks, Crover plays a big part in defining the Melvins sound. "Honey Bucket."

The drummer for Bloodrock, Rick Cobb lll, was no slouch.
Richard Christy - Death, Control Denied, Iced Earth
The Sound of Perseverance "Spirit Crusher"
One of the fastest technical drummers in metal, check out Death live in Eindhoven 1998 and you may agree.

#12 This guy makes the list because he played along side a freak of Nature.
Trilogy
Tarkus
Brain salad Surgery
Performance Tarkus: A very nice accomplice for the freak of nature, especially during the organ section, he's really doing some amazing stuff. Cap off to players who can keep up with a genius.I Grew up on classical music. The Freak was a gateway to all the music I now live by. For anybody who saw him live "wow" the closest thing in regards to the virtuosic playing of Brahms and bach one could get. Emerson that is!
Great pick. Very cool tribute to Keith Emerson, a truly unique artist.
