my father ran Bartleys Buses for decades all around this area.. he died in 1995, and it shut down shortly after...im his only son , but have lived in Adelaide South Australia since 1968, went to Selattyn School until i left for Australia
Superb array of the Oswestry many of us recall from childhood in the 1960s and how so many historic landmarks and shops of charm have utterly disappeared. Thanks for keeping vital historic images alive.
just showed this to my mum, she grew up here when she was a little kid, seeing the old photo's has really cheered her up n brought back memory's. thank you
Amazing. My mum was born and raised in Oswestry, and these would have been extremely familiar views for her. In 1962, she and my dad would have been courting, possibly engaged. My dad was at Park Hall doing his basic training. I was astonished to see Vaughan's. It was a frequent haunt when i was little and we were visiting my grandparents, a stones throw away in Albert Road. My grandad Bill would have immediately recognised all of the pubs shown here, since he used to play piano for beer in many of them. This i found out at my nan's funeral. She had been an usherette at the cinema in her youth. I miss Oswestry very much, and would loved to have seen it when these were taken, just four years before my birth,
Adrian Rosenlund-Hudson 1962 my grandad was at park hall with the royal Scots and nesscliff got a lance corporal and now lives in oswestry to this day. small world
What a fabulous collection of photographs! Looking at the pictures, I'm guessing Mr Bishop rode a motorcycle & sidecar, and had a young lady passenger? Thank you for taking the time to put this montage together.
Great set of photographs from bygone Oswestry.unfortunately for me, the slideshow runs too fast with an annoying zoom effect which prevents you seeing the complete scene of any image for longer than two seconds.it would be nice if you uploaded this again with a less distracting style.Thankyou for showing Oswestry life from a different era.
Lovely pictures from a bygone era. Shame it feels abit like a ghost town.....I'm guessing it was a Sunday morning, and most people were at church?? Btw, the music doesn't really go with this film........still it's nice - is it Chopin?
Interesting views of the town I grew up in. But it was a lot more lively than this...obviously pix taken on a Sunday when nobody was about. And that background music! Not appropriate at all.

we moved to Morda in 1959 from Meifod. Such a culture shock! A lot of these views are familiar. the streets are so empty. its a very homely town.

Used to go to Nescliff Camp as an Army Cadet. I think we had relatives there, too. I remember going to visit someone there when i was a nipper...

I go 2 army cadets in Willow street
In the old TA centre, is it? My mum had a cousin who lived on Willow street. Between Oak road and Castle street somewhere.....
