    What if the American Civil War never ended?
    I know it sounds crazy, but bear with me for a moment. Here's the general setup: Shortly before his death, Robert E. Lee privately revealed to a close friend that if he had known what would happen to the southern states after the war, he wouldn't have surrendered at Appomattox. Instead, he would have, and I quote, "died with my sword in my hand".
    What if he had?
    Realizing that defeat is inevitable, Lee chooses to lure in Grant's army with offers of surrender at Appomattox Courthouse before launching one last charge into the Union lines. Lee is killed in the charge, but Confederates unaware of their general's death push forward and kill Grant before the more numerous and better-armed Union troops win the day.
    Inspired by Lee's sacrifice, the remaining Confederate generals in other theaters of the war continue the fight. As their supplies and manpower dwindle, they slowly shift to guerilla tactics that they would use against the Federal army for decades...
    I haven't planned out much more in detail, but it would involve General Sherman becoming POTUS and end with something akin to a Dixie Easter Rising sometime in WW1 or WW2.

    • @MonsieurDean
      @MonsieurDean  4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Such a thing wouldn't be out of the scale of reality: A transition to guerrilla tactics had generally followed in our own timeline with the first incarnation of the Klan and was quickly put down by the north, yet despite this Southern identity and resistance continued to exist arguably even to today. The second incarnation of the Klan with it's wider reach might seem a good force behind this alternate Dixie Rising, however, this incarnation came to represent the WASP identity of America against the incoming waves of Catholic and Jewish immigration from South and Eastern Europe, as well as the after-effects of emancipation, only becoming as significant as it did because of this broader focus, meaning we'd instead need to be working with a surviving division of the original pro-Southern order in this alternate timeline since they'd be the most likely form for this Southern resistance to take. Where it would go, I'd need to look into it a bit more.

    • @benjamingrist6539
      @benjamingrist6539 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Monsieur Z it should also be taken into account that after the war the occupying federal army tended to treat even towns and counties in Southern states that had supported the Union as traitors. That’s why we see so many towns in eastern Tennessee have Confederate monuments even though those towns overwhelmingly supported the Union during the war. If the Union response to the guerrilla activity was severe and indiscriminate, we could see a more united South.

    • @timvanrijn8239
      @timvanrijn8239 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      isnt this just neo-confederates but harder. if Z i right you might see the Klan be an exual terrorist orginisation.
      wich could lead to a dumb reality akin to the carlist where the klan takes up the cross you might never expect. the klan might become communist or anti segregationist or even civic nationalist.
      underground movement can be realy twisted in a few decades. Like the zapatistas or the for mentioned carlist

    • @benjamingrist6539
      @benjamingrist6539 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MonsieurDean another thing to consider is how the black population of the South would react to the guerillas and the federal response. In our timeline, the federals tended not to be kind to slaves that hadn't run away before the union army came to their community, and in some cases, even the runaways were treated poorly (most notably in the contraband camps, from which runaway slaves were not allowed to leave until the war ended and whose poor living conditions led to 1 out of every 4 runaways dying before then). If you read the "Slave Narratives", a collection of interviews with surviving former slaves in the 1930s, you'll find that while they're all grateful for their freedom, many of them hate what the Union army did to them, their families, and their communities during the war.
      In this Dixie Rising scenario, this could lead a significant minority of blacks to support the guerillas, either indirectly through food and information or directly by taking up arms. Keeping with the Easter Rising comparison, this could be analogous to the minority of Protestants that were and are Irish Republicans.

    It's seems this comment sections fill with irrelevant comments nothing much pertain to the subject mention in this video
    It's very important for many particular in the Caribbean to know it's history ,I blame no one nation in The West Indies for the dissolution of the West Indies Federation ,
    Britain had all islands separated for centuries then they expected those islands to be united ,when colonial power still controlled locally in those islands,unfortunately these separation in my country Trinidad and Tobago between east Indians and Africans by the British has still to this day cause many inequalities
    When Trinidad got it's independence 1 in every 50 child got an education today T&T has one of the highest literacy rates in the world at 99.1 ,all the islands population were not educated by their colonial systems ,which has to this day resulted in slavery mentally by many citizens with high demand on remittances,tourism and services
    Britain drained the wealth from its colonies leaving very little to build on and many see these countries as third world when in fact their masters states are see as 1st world show the delusional economic facts their irrelevant to global dominance are not considered as equally important.

    I’m curious, with support from the U.S. this Federation would be a solid encirclement of Cuba. I can see this becoming a hotly contested area by a Soviet backed Cuba. While you touched briefly on policies that kept communist influence at bay, I don’t see an impact or consequence for an English speaking nation being forged around Cuba which would rightly see itself being encircled by potential staging grounds for invasion. A fear they still have to this day that would be heightened in this scenario. What do you have as an answer for this aspect of this alt history?

    • @MonsieurDean
      @MonsieurDean  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's important to note that for a while this arrangement would be little different than the status quo, though the islands are taking to developing themselves, they don't pose anymore a threat to Cuba than they had prior, that is until relations with the US improved to the point of a more strategic partnership was forged (around the time of the oil crisis most likely), and fears of this relationship would only contribute to Cuban support of rebels in the East Antilles.

    If the West Indies Federation continued, the plan for the WIF to join Canada as a Province probably would have continued as support was coming up again and again in the region. There was already a plan for Air Canada to buy BOAC, Air Jamaica, LIAT, and other regional airlines and have them be a subsidiary of Air Canada going forward with the WIF governments becoming minority shareholders.. Canada had already moved ahead transferring two ships to the region known as the Federal Palm and Federal Maple before the WIF broke down.

    I suspect that the annexations of PNG and Naroo would lead to full acceptance as states rather than off shore territories that eventually given self rule. New Zealand protectorates such as Cook Islands would be granted statehood too. The South Pacific Federation would be a powerhouse and even some other smaller nations such as Samoa and Tonga would see the benefits of joining the union.

      @@MonsieurDean Socialist unions throughout the German world lead to a socialist/syndicalist union, overthrowing the dynasties of Prussia, Bavaria, Austria, etc. France encourages the revolutionaries, to keep Germany and Austria weak. Norway-Denmark takes Pomerania and the North Sea coast, and Polish partisans welcome Germans in to fight the Russian overlords. The Two Sicilies seizes Venetia and Rome, and unites Italy a generation early. IIRC Netherlands and Belgium were united at this time; perhaps Belgium could agitate for independence even as the Dutch king attempts to expand his holdings. Hungary breaks off from Austria, and in the power vacuum, is more favorable to a union with Bohemia. Hungary makes a mutual defense pact with Italy in exchange for a sphere of influence in the Balkans, taking Bosnia (an erstwhile Austrian territory) directly. Russia fights back against the Polish liberationists, while guaranteeing Bulgaria. A Russo-Hungarian alliance forms. Bohemia seizes Austria, Carinthia, and Styria in the name of Ottokar II, renames itself Greater Moravia. The Moravian-Hungarian Union, Italy, and Russia form the Central Alliance against the Ottoman Empire. Britain intervenes to protect Egypt, but stays out of the Straits in exchange for huge concessions in Palestine and Syria.
      A generation later, with no major Hohenzollern power in Prussia, France chooses not to contest their claim to the Spanish throne. Instead, France becomes power-broker to the newly-reconstituted Holy Roman Empire--the Emperor now is French instead of Austrian. France advances into Kamerun. Britain enters a condominium with Egypt over Sudan, and a similar condominium with Russia over Greece. Bulgaria is jointly guaranteed by the Central Alliance, while Serbia is under Italian rule. French Mexico is able to be reinforced, and the Monroe Doctrine suffers its first major defeat. Confederate revanchists make common cause with French Mexico, dodging across the Rio Grande to replenish and resupply, avoiding Union patrols. Because of the constantly-looming threat of French intervention in the Union-occupied South, the Northern government looks to Canada for aid, growing closer to Britain in the process. Devoid of allies and obsessed with maintaining their rule over Central Europe, France cozies up to Norway-Denmark, who in the absence of opposition from Germany or France, has begun the process of unifying with Sweden. Russia is less preoccupied with its northeastern coast, now that it possesses the entire Black Sea coastline and the Straits. Britain allies with the Central Alliance against the Franco-Scandinavians. The clash of France and Britain at Fashoda brings the United States into the conflict on Britain's side, but their contribution is primarily naval, due to the need to keep a large army at home to suppress Confederate uprisings. Confederate army units, trained in French Mexico, begin to invade British-held Caribbean islands, in an attempt to establish the Golden Circle. Scandinavian U-boats begin to harry British shipping from its colonies to the home islands. France invades northwest Italy while its marines prepare for an invasion of Britain. Meanwhile, Moravian and Hungarian forces invade French-puppeted Bavaria. And that...is where I'll leave you.

      I briefly touched on this in my video about the Kalmar Union. Generally you could expect a greater division between North-East and Western Europe in both trade and policy. There'd be more opportunity for colonization of North America with greater efforts in Northern Canada by both Russia and Kalmar, and since the too are likely to become more a threat to Western dominance, we may see earlier moves for Western European cooperation, perhaps even a successful union under Napoleon.

I live on the Dutch Caribbean and we had a union of the ABC islands run by Curaćau and money was send directly there from the Netherlands to be distributed equaly.... well that did not happen . Most was kept in Curaćau and distributed directly in the hands of the corrupt leaders of this island . Thats why Aruba demanded to be more independent in the kingdom of the Netherlands and they got their wish , thats why Aruba is doing so good today . Sadly corruption is the name of the game on Aruba aswel and the people of this island get almost to no share of what the Netherlands sent to help . Most of it goes in the pocket of all the corrupt leaders of this tiny island .
