Nice looking dextra. We have a 1963 Fordson Dextra. The motor starts right off even after a 6 month sit. The only problem we have with it is the transmission has a tendancy to lock in gear. But overall its a nice little tractor!
I would like to mention a few helpful hints. possably when cold starting turn engine while injecting a little either at the same time, if the engine wants to start keep turning until it does start. this makes it easyier on starter and definatly less chance of a head gasket being hurt. please note either can damage engine your right on one thing use only what you need. try this method and good luck.
Its really not a lot of use squirting ether the way you did it what you really should do is open the clip on the rubber hose connecting air filter to manifold pull off hose and spray directly into manifold as engine is cranking . the way you do it ether has to filter through oil bath and that kills it off. good video
Does the hand pump on the left hand bottom of the tank (it is part of the shut off tap) work? I usually give it two pumps and then around 40 seconds of heater with the throttle fully open and pump the hand pump every so often while it's cranking (hand pump squirt's extra fuel into engine for a bit more kick) but if it's used to "a sniff" what I've said won't be as effective. By the way very nice tractor.
hey i am going to tell you that was a nice start and to i am buying a 1952 farmmall and it looks good but needs a paint job that all a bout it and the brakes need some work
The heater and the primer pump work together in this. The heater is only to ignite the diesel fuel intected into the intake manifold. If either of the two does not work it is unseless. Even I was told using the heater in combination with the heater is dangerous.
I got my self a 1958 Fordson Dexta and I don't know what the lever is on the right hand side when sitting on tractor under seat could you tell me what it does.
I wish i could ween it off of ether. It has too low compression to start cold, plus i did find out the glow plug isnt working. It needs an overhaul, ive had it the past 20 years, before that my grandfather had it, and my great grandfather bought it new.
And the central glowplug/manifold heater cant be operational,or else you would have blown your air filter sky high with all that ether in it...When it works, you should hear a barely noticeable "puff" from the intake.
If these engines get too adicted to the ether then they will never start. try only using ether when you really need it. My Petter PAZ1 diesel used to be very addicted to it but when I stopped using it, it started to run better and better over time. Also it took a shorter amount of time to start
Neither my heater or fuel primer do anything. Even then i dont think it would do much good. I think the rings are too far worn to build up sufficient compression to start it cold.
Hmmm I think you should look at your starter, sounds like it turns the engine too slow.We have a MF 35 with the same engine that starts instantly in any weather, after sitting any period of time, preheating is unnecessary unless its very cold. You should never use ether on these engines, nor should you have to.I noticed this one also starts instantly once it starts firing,if something is wrong with the engine itself it just dont do that. The starter runs at 1/2 speed if a brush doesnt have contact.
Mines the same ,I have to use easy start but once started it will stop n start all day I just spray into slit on air filter while it's turning over ,and fires straight away. Check mine out attached to circular saw on my channel they do sound beutifull .👍
blimy, that was painfull to watch.. Dexta`s should start easily.. rebuild that engine,... Never use easystart!-- only makes the problem get worse + cracked rings etc.
For Godsake push in the excess fuel button on.the injection pump and stop destroying the engine with that lethal easy start, and buy a good tractor battery. I worked for a haulage company in Ipswich if caught using easy start you we're sacked in the spot.Liam kilkee Ireland.🔨🔧

I love how the Dexta has that unique perkins 3 cylinder sound

Real hard starter , gotta love the sound of that starter . It doesn`t seem to be to happy there . Glad it started .
Great job, man! That's a cool tractor. Glad to see that you got it running!
Started my super dexta today after 6 months, started first time I love these tractors.
I love these old tractors...

i think its good to crank an engine like that when it sits for so long, gets the oil all over everything inside, easier on it.
Pretty simple get a blow torch pull up the air breeder stack and put torch down into it. It will start in a few seconds.
The battery should be changed.. At my Super Dexta it s doing the same when the battery does not have enough power (amps).
All the bests.

There are 4 brushes inside the starter. If one of them doesnt have contact,it will run at 1/2 speed. :-)
Yes you push it straight down by the lift controll yes is that what it does ok thanks.
Oh by the way do you have a handbrake or a locking pin.
hey i am going to tell you that was a nice start and to i am buying a 1952 farmmall and it looks good but needs a paint job that all a bout it and the brakes need some work
No, I believe they continued making them with the vertical exhaust. It was an option to have underswept exhaust.

Hi I have a fordson super dexta tractor and idk where the glow plugs are do you think you could tell me where they are plz
I wish i could ween it off of ether. It has too low compression to start cold, plus i did find out the glow plug isnt working. It needs an overhaul, ive had it the past 20 years, before that my grandfather had it, and my great grandfather bought it new.
in the uk your suppose to spray ether in whilst cranking over on a diesel
It does, but I don't believe the primer actually injects fuel anymore. Ive used it and it makes no difference than not using it.
P.S.:Always use full throttle when starting a cold diesel, release to a high idle immediately after starting.
press the cold start button on the pump let glow for 40 seconds end it will start a lot easer
@TheDexta1958 Is it the one right by the lift control? if so, that turns the lift from draft to constant pumping.
And the central glowplug/manifold heater cant be operational,or else you would have blown your air filter sky high with all that ether in it...When it works, you should hear a barely noticeable "puff" from the intake.
Yes, there is a glow plug heater and a fuel primer, however on my Dexta they do no good.
Thanks
Rings are already gone. Ill rebuild it one of these days, but I'm in no hurry.
press the cold start bouton on the side of the engine
Some dextas doesnt have it
Mine had broken gauges, but I replaced them. These arent original style. The temp gauge is sunpro, and the tachometer is for a Massey Ferguson 35.
It doesnt work with the button, but we straight wired it to the battery one day and it still worked.
does the horn on your dexta still work?

@5410driver Yes, but once it reaches idle the fuel will shut off and the engine will almost certainly stop, unless you live in a sub-tropical area.

It has a glow plug, but it doesnt really glow anymore
I would have if i didnt have to hold the camera. I hate using ether, but with the rings loose, it needs a little help to reach combustion pressure.
it is 144 cid 3 cylinder engine based on the famous perkins p series of engines.
Using the glow plug is no use any more, and it becomes an eather baby.
Mines the same ,I have to use easy start but once started it will stop n start all day I just spray into slit on air filter while it's turning over ,and fires straight away. Check mine out attached to circular saw on my channel they do sound beutifull .👍
I think they have grid heaters, not glow plugs.
should spray the either when its cranking..
Tried to start our '64 dexta but we found out we have a bad battery.
we got my dads tractor running again it had some bug in the fuel he changed the dexta pannals to super dexta panals
No false advertising here
repair or replace lift pump
great videos I lost my you tube account
i have and old ford that dos that but it dos it for 10 to 20 mins even with more power
sounds like it was dry at the beggining
get the fucker rebuilt

@KapteinOpel / No need to even touch the throttle the governor inside the pump already has it at full fuel anyway
Anyway the starter runs too slow.
