Hit me up when you’re down the island next, you can park the van in the driveway and hook up to the power. There’s still a few good banks at Wooli🤙😜

Kyle much respect not an easy thing to do. But yes sometimes there’s more than what we view from what we search internally. I’m from PR 🇵🇷 living in Florida and enjoy much your videos even I don’t get to surf much as I would love. 😎☮️🤙🏼

Quitting society is not quite the right phrase seeing as you still depend on all the things society provides. Yes you live in a van but that drives on roads maintained by the government and is powered by fuel delivered by international trade. You sleep soundly at night because of a police force that keeps you safe and probably expect to get treated by a hospital when you are sick. One day you might have children and probably want them to go to school. You use the internet which relies on communications infrastructure etc. I could go on. The point I'm making is not that you are wrong to want to live differently but I think looking in the wrong place for solutions.
I did what you did, left a family, very successful career, nice house etc. and moved to a small island in the middle of nowhere alone to surf. It didn't make me happy. It took that mistake for me to realise happiness comes from community, roots, relationships and physical connections with people and a place. It also comes with putting back in to the place as much as you get out, just look at the rankings of happy countries and Scandinavia where they pay the most tax are at the top.
Nothing wrong with trying what you are doing now because its normal for many young men to need to get it out their system. Maybe when the summer is over and the nights draw in, try putting down deep roots in a place you love and building a community around you, I promise it will work out better.
The indigenous people where you are are pretty good at going off on their own in a productive way, maybe worth talking to them about it. Best of luck.

Great response! You describe Ubuntu. I left the states to live a different life in Spain. My experience has been wonderful except I discovered the importance of connectivity with others. We need to be uncomfortable at times and it’s ok to not live a perfect life. We just need to try to live our best life.

Such beautiful reply and really felt like rooted in experience. That felt really constructive feedback. What you said reminded me that longitudinal study about longevity, health and happiness. One of the most important things for that seems to be strong and meaningful relationships with people.

This is a brilliant response. I'm grateful for all of Kale's content but, to make the above claim is ontologically and epistemologically pretty hefty and quite misguided. Your vocation is, after all, a content creator. That relies on an audience. You need us and we need you. In the end it turns out we all need each other. Kale, it sounds like you might be beginning down the road of historical materialism. You should check out Hegel and Marx. That's obviously really dense with no context but it is the intellectual history of the ideas that you're groping at in the above video. Start with the Historical Dialectic and then look the the Grundrisse. David Harvey is a great guide. Here is a great Hegelian/Marxist insight to consider, 'everything contains it's own contradictions'. e.g. 5:10 "It can be pretty frustrating at the same time as being glorious."
Quoting H.L. Mencken is kinda dangerous. He was elitist at best and fascist at worst. Not someone you would want to align with. And in the most generous reading, he's just a relativist. He's also and avowed Anti-Semitic.
It's very important to not just think about what you feel but to think about what you think. What is your ideology, how did you arrive at it and how is it historically contextualized?
I hope the above doesn't make me sound like an ass. I just really appreciate you and your videos. Hell, you've practically taught me how to surf and surfing has literally changed my life. I'm so so grateful. I am simply hoping to return the favor and share a bit about the things I spend time learning. Cheers brev! Come back to the States soon and come up to Nor Cal.

Keep it up Kale - you're inspiring so many of us to just go for it. I just failed my first semester at university and expectations are heavy on my shoulders to make something of the opportunities I've been given. I don't know where to go from here, but I'm accepting the randomness of life and the curve balls it throws. It's fine to not know what tomorrow will bring.. just keep striving for what gives your life meaning and purpose.

"I'm not too sure, but I'm still OK." That's what it should always be like, our lives. Always in doubt, but always positive. We surfers will always have that light leading us, which is the joy of anticipation of the fun we are sure to have, sooner or later, in the ocean. And that is what keeps us going, water flowing will keep us going. Ah, and your surfing looks nice on the midlength!

Your best video for me. It is difficult to leave society when you need it for the essentials of your life, food, transport, clothes and boards, you have to engage. I love the idea of pilgrimage or walkabout. Allowing yourself to go and explore the 'spiritual' side of life but also returning and engaging with society. Surfing provides the key to the spirit side for me, as you get older (and your roots are strong) the pilgrimages get longer and deeper, I am touching on 62 yo, recently retired and slowly making the surfaris longer, last week I made a decision to prioritise surfing for my life, for the first time in my life, the feeling is uplifting. More power to you Kale you've got a great blog and a life goal and are passionate, I know you'll make it through fine.

I had a bad experience in business involving a government department that needlessly blocked me from an essential market. To block a business from market is to strangle income. Income is for business what oxygen is for lungs. My family business caved in and an undelaying health issue I didn't know I had was triggered by the stress which nearly killed me.
I came out of the hospital a month later financially stricken and sick. No aspect of my life was unaffected, finances, relationships with family and friends, my health and motivation, depression. But of course, I was never going to give up.
I had assumed the government was in business with us, shared interests in the success of Australian business and the economy. The media and gov are always going on about the importance of small businesses. But in reality the government conduct themself with indifference to small business. In my experience and the experience of others I have observed.
You cannot go through an experience like this without coming to second guess much of what you thought you knew. I started the recognize what the government is and how it imposes its influences and to what ends. I could mention many things, but one of the more interesting aspects of their influence that goes against the common interests of the people is the nature of Fiat government issued currency and how it is distributed by banks. I'm not going to go on about it now, but its an ugly truth about the world that I would have preferred not to know. But knowing it can be an advantage in trading and markets.
So having come through all this and the new perspectives it forced upon me. I couldn't go back to doing things the way I did before. So in the rebuilding of my life, my priorities shifted. The road I took in recent years what not easy, but I would encourage people to get creative in their efforts to seek an escape from being locked into the drudgery of 9-5 by their bank debt. You'll spend the biggest efforts of your life paying off the big box that you live in, only to die and have it swapped out for a small pine box.
If the best measure of a life well-lived is diversity of experience then the modern life of schedules and routines are massive detractors. Our culture does not have our best interests in mind when they begin our conditioning for the schedules and routines of the modern life with factory model schooling. They cultivate us to participate in an economic machine that is eating the Earth and its environment, and human life hours. Thats not inspired living and surely humans are capable of better. But how are we going to achieve better cultural ideals to live by while commercial interests script and dictate the culture?
Anyway, I've chosen a path much like yours. I'm going to spend the next 10 years sailing surfing Australia and the world.

Thank you for still being part of society and sharing these vids full of surfing and everything in it. For me, 'western struggles' are just as real as any other 'bigger' problem. Dealing with them doesn't make us weak, it means we - as a society - have progressed to work on more subtle things. We can all be more 'quiet' now and look within, just like you are showing; leading by example, showing everyone what life could be like if they cho(o)se the other path

Feeling the same man. Been working in a major company in Australia (I'm a foreigner) and decided to do a two years surf trip in 2020. Surfed the best waves of my life and met the best people too. I am now trying to find my balance as I noticed that I still would like to get/give back from/to society, but the less I can from/to capitalism (100% is sadly impossible as I'm already messing with the environment writing this message).
I've always worked on renewable energies projects and wish to pursue that path with an even bigger impact than before. But the only green energy is the one that we don't consume, so I feel the same than you. I spend days and days reading about how f***** the planet is getting and it makes me sad, particularly when I realise that 75% of Australia's energy production comes from coal. And it will get exponentially worse when you consider how fast it changed since the industrial revolution. So I think it's ok to feel lost about the future, as long as there is a consistency between what we think and what we do, and as long as we are good people to others. The people living the longest are the ones who love. Anywho, I know you're happy because you're passionate just like me.

The best way for me to find happiness when traveling in my van, is to keep things simple as possible .less is more .
You will realise that you only need a few things with you.give away or sell anything you dont use on a daily or weekly basis as you do this you will find things a lot simpler .ive managed to simplify my van and things i have with me and realised how much easier this makes things.

Hello from southern California! what are the chances, I was just talking with my family about that quote earlier today! (hard times -> strong people....etc...) very true unfortunately, to some degree, and I think it's very prevalent in metropolitan areas across the world but particularly the US for me. I think people have become detached from what really matters and what a real problem is. I think the best way for me to remember what matters is being in the ocean, a constant in a world full of unnecessary chaos. Love what you do! I have to visit Australia sometime you guys have some epic waves 🤙!

Love your stuff, man, it keeps getting better and better. This video also kinda resonates with me a bit, albeit not because of the same reasons. I'm basically going through the same sort of uncertainty you are now as I'm facing the decision of emigrating to Australia from Argentina to work, live and hopefully become a citizen at some point, and the feeling of disconnection (certainly due to other factors) that you describe is, I believe, sort of EXACTLY what I'm kinda feeling right now, even though everything's still a bit far away. Maybe it's also how the current times have also made us way more anxious beings then we used to be?

Babylon is burning, Rastas say:D Surfing, splitboarding and hiking in the mountains always makes me happy though, no matter what. So I just dedicate as much time as I can to things that make me happy. Thats it. I wish I had balls to live in a van, so big up yourself for being a legend:D

The funny thing about van life is you dont realise you are living the dream .its when you stop doing it that it comes home to you how much pleasure it was giving you.traveling and exploring is very beneficial to your character and mental wellbeing meeting interesting people aswell.

I've thought about van life and think it often looks more glamours than it probably is. I did it for a week on vacation in New Zealand and it was great but that wasn't full time and it was temporary. Anyway I can definitely see the challenges. Here in the USA, we are really not well equipped relative to Aus or NZ. There is no such thing as freedom camping here. Also everything is so damn expensive here in the US especially California. There are also logistical issues such as if you don't have a tax home, banking can be very difficult, the cost of health care if you have to pay for health insurance without being employed can be extremally expensive(assuming you have income from investments) and most certainly if you have income from being a digital nomad or any form of employment that provides income but no healthcare coverage.

At least that's what I understand from some of the other channels I watch. Either way, I love your content and I love the message that you put out and really appreciate all the videos. My family and I took our RV from SoCal and drove to Panama, stopping on the way to surf perfect waves. We were disconnected from society and really bonded together as a family because we didn’t speak very good Spanish, so the only people we could talk to were each other. I was surfing like 6-8 hours everyday doing like zero school work and just surfing all day. Then we got evacuated because of Covid-19 and we had to go back to reality.

Remember my friend search for peacefulness within not happiness. Happiness doesn’t last forever and you will always be left feeling down when it’s gone if that’s what u search for. Seek peacefulness within and happiness will just come and go in ur life and u won’t care when it’s gone

Hey Kale! Love your honest account and glad to hear your okay! I see you have a knee brace on early in your video? I have had two failed reconstructions, dont wear a brace surfing, live in the UK and wear 4/5mm wetsuits. I use a brace for other activities (like climbing, high risk sort of stuff), but have never really worked out how to make it work for surfing?... I know there are a few surfers out there surfing with them, what's it like? I would love to hear your experience of using one. Do you worry about smashing the board? Do you only use it for certain conditions/higher risk situations? How does it fit? I wont ask what happened, but it's awesome to see you shredding with one on! #hereshoping 😃

Nice story indeed, but if you need a coffee machine or wetsuit you rely on industry and society and the sole reason you can do what you do is BECAUSE not everybody does it. Very nice quote "bad times create strong people...", inspirational stories like yours inspire us and make dealing with mainstream life easier. About being strong... a hard one for me is to be inclusive instead of competing and cutting people off BUT I am fortunate enough to live in a country where that hard survival competition does not yet go down to bare minimal starving survival... that is when hard choices come in "allow yourself to die or compete and leave others die". I love the crowded lineup analogy if you share nicely not drop or snake... or take a foil, get away and enjoy the silence while it lasts. Sorry for bragging, it is because yes, you inspired me, reminding me of that monk life when one leaves expectation behind ready to move on to whatever is next and that takes courage and I'd rather face the unknown than fear for my life.

I retired from society after working 45 years to devote my time to meditation 🧘‍♀️.
This was AFTER being a family man wage slave & contributor to a few charities.Oh & I surfed for 35 years but a back injury & age keeps me from my outer search for a stoke, now it's an inner search.
