I honestly love Salvation as much as the Original. I feel like it's extremely underrated.

Salvation is okay but for me City of Angels is the best sequel. I know I'm in the minority when I say that but I stand by it.

You're not wrong, Vincent Perez did great for what he was given but you could definitely tell Miramax was trying to go harder with the dark humor Eric Draven had which I personally think was to the detriment. It just made me compare the two instead of giving him his own thing cuz everyone can agree Brandon Lee just can't be touched. I liked city of angels too.

@scottjones845 agreed. City of Angels is the better sequel. I like Salvation as well. The original with Brandon Lee is one of my all time favorite movies and is untouchable. Wicked Prayer is the only BAD movie in the franchise, IMO.

I'd really like to see the original director's cut as the feeling of it being too close to the original was my biggest complaint. No disrespect if it's your favorite, as I think there was potential.

The thing is, there are a lot of Crow comics that aren't about Eric Draven.
Also, Eric Mabius did a good job in this. I don't get why you think he didn't. Dude comes off as unhinged and spends the entire movie about three seconds away from ripping someone in half.
And that's not even mentioning that roar of "TOOOMEY!" near the end.

    • @UNBORNSUFFER

      Absolutely agree.Eric nailed this role.

I actually preferred City Of Angels over this. At least City Of Angels felt like it had a budget, where Salvation didn't, and it's rather evident in the effects like the rather fake-looking CG helicopter explosion and the sets that definitely feel more like soundstages than actual locations. It all lends the movie the looked and feel of a made-for-TV movie. I give it credit for the wrongful conviction murder mystery element to it and the decent cast, but everything around those elements lends a quality to it like a movie that was made to be aired on TV at 2 AM on a Sunday morning rather than a serious theatrical release, so it's ultimately not shocking that it was DTV.

The movie is dogvomit, but still....
I have a weak spot for Dennis Hopper when he simultaneously has no fucks to give but still goes all out.
Like TCM 2: I love that movie, but understand many don't. But I fail to see how even then, Hopper yelling "I'm the king of the harvest" whilst wielding dual chainsaws and running after Otis Firefly in his walkabout period is not the crowning achievement of cinema.

This was my favorite sequel because for all its differences it connected tonaly to the comic. The dark humor, the violent nature, and even some direct lines. "Only forever," was lifted right off the pages and it was a wonderful call-back.

I have to wonder what this franchise would have been like if each installment after the first one was based off the Crow's sequel graphic novels, since several people inhabit the role there too.

    • @user-zh4vo1kw1z
      @user-zh4vo1kw1z 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I was thinking the same thing.
The graphic novels only have the brandoncrow in the first storyline. After that it was more of a chronicle of different 'crows', with some very surreal moments. I remember one only a few pages long (one of my favourite short comics):
two crows (the actual birds) sitting on a wooden beam, discussing if 'this one' will make it (clearly hinting at some grand tragic backstory). POV slowly moving away while their discussion shifts from the pseudophilosophical to bitching about someone else.
Ends with them chasing away the crow they didn't like and start eating the eyes of the person hanging from the gallows they were sitting on with a 'well, they can't all be winners, shame to let good food go to waste'. With the body slightly twitching, hinting at either deathspasms, the soul trying to return but failing or, worst of all, managing to come back but still stuck on the gallows, so royally screwed (most options are only clear if you had read a few other storylines as well).
Absurdly dark (but still genuinely funny) humor. Hinting at such a rich mythology and illuminating some of it without making it text or subtext but communicating it just through how the story is told.
The Crow doesn't need movies, it needs more freedom. Make it an anthology series like AHS, don't skimp on the writers cuz you need story more than you need CGI for a concept like that.
And most of all: have the guts to move past Brandon's legacy. Make it new. Ignore the 'fans' who go 'bwah, it is not 1on1 what I had imagined/what I made the first out to be in my mind'.

This was the only sequel that I didn't completely dislike. It had a few moments here that I enjoyed. Like the scene where the drunk girl in the car wakes up when he gets shot and screams and he's like "You're Up!"

I remember renting this shortly after it came out just because Kirsten Dunst was in it and I was not disappointed. It's not nearly as good as the original, but it's personally my favorite out of the sequels. I just wish they hadn't gone with the Mad Libs route when it came to the sequels. Much like the Bring it On films and... and you know, most Hallmark/Lifetime movies.

One thing I didn't see mentioned in the 2 sequel reviews: Soundtracks
They are what have always pulled me away from these movies. Don't get me wrong, I do like the music in ALL the movies. But where the 1st movie had a great soundtrack surrounding it, these sequels feel like a soundtrack that studios tried building a movie around. Idk, just how I feel every time I see them

I disagree with you about the lead actor. I think he did a great job in the role. To me he seemed like he was having fun. The bigger the bad guy count the more fun I think it was. Also disagree with the recycled idea u threw out there. I don’t know how true this is but I heard the main reason no one played the role more than once except maybe the crow itself was because of the Brandon lee situation. Supposedly there was a idea among actors to not do it more than once out of respect to lee. Take it with a grain of salt though as I am unsure if it is true or not

The positives and negatives are all like you said it, to me this is my favorite sequel in this series, nothing can touch the original. City Of Angels is missing a lot because of the heavy editing, this one was surely made for TV, but pretty good in it's execution, Wicked Prayer is pure garbage.

The Crow franchise is ranked in the order in which they came out.
    Part 1: BEST, ICONIC.
Part 2: DECENT, ENJOYABLE. Has enough fluff with the Graeme Revell score to tug the heart strings.
    Part 3: MEDIOCRE, watchable ONCE.
    Part 4: ABSOLUTE TRASH, avoid.

I haven't seen Wicked Prayer, but Salvation has its good moments. The comic's creator James O'Barr actually praised Eric Mabius' performance, but also said the rest of the film "needed a lot of work". Nothing tops the original, but this one is a worthy companion piece. My only real gripes are the excessive gore and brief nudity - the 1994 entry kept both aspects to a minimum.

In every review I see for this movie, I keep hearing the same thing about the plot theme...
Is everyone unaware of the fact that this is a comic series that focuses on different people avenging their deaths or a loved ones? That is the whole mythos of The Crow. It's not re-hashing or tired. It's what the different comic arches focus on with every character.

I thought the first three each had their own interesting take on the hero back from the dead seeking vengeance. Each one was a different age, and at a different point in their own lives. Eric was a young man getting ready to settle down, Ashe was an older man and father, while Alex was a young kid who only knew that he loved Lauren and that she was taken from him.
I think people forget that Alex isn't supposed to be an adult, he was a young kid in love.

the first film is unique. the fantasy world is not in the foreground here, but somewhere in the background. the whole fantasy element here is eric. while the second part is, of course, a cheaper copy of the first part. with the fact that the real world itself intertwines with the fantasy world, especially since the enemy himself has some supernatural powers. this film is more of a thriller with fantasy elements, I have always liked it, it is not a classic like the first one, but an interesting play with the form.

I was always curious about the initially planned sequel that Rob Zombie was going to direct where the protagonist was going to be a young woman. Miramax cancelled it when Universal shelved House of 1000 Corpses (I’m sure you remember, that was supposed to come out 5 years before it did). As for Salvation, it’s not great, but way better than the other sequels.

This was one of the better sequels. The second one city of Angels could have actually been way better than it was especially with the whole father/ son aspect and Sarah coming back but the Weinstein messed it up in the editing.
I’ll say this in defense of all of the films. Yes their origins are cookie cutter but that’s because of the fact that the only way someone can get the power of the crow is to suffer a great loss and a horrible death. (There are loads of different crows in the comic book series and only one didn’t get their powers that way. He did something very evil to get his powers though) I do give this one and city of Angels props for playing with it a bit.

I actually love this movie. Really the only one I don’t is Wicked Prayer.

I kinda hated this one the sharpie marker make up and the razor thin budget made it look like a movie made for TNT in 1994. It did have a good soundtrack though.

I had this on DVD but at some point I figured I'd just be able to find anything I needed online, so I gave my entire massive DVD collection full of random cult things to a film-nerd/director friend who was looking for some shit that I had. Now I kind of regret giving away all the hard-to-find movies that I had. I had goddamn Caligula, Salo, and Ghosts of the Civil Dead in that collection.

I guess they try to do as in the comics, each story is different.

I got mine easy just picked it up from amazon lol. I found the city of angels just passable to ok this one I found alright on its own but nothing special. The villains have been weak since after part 1.

Are you going to review The Crow: Stairway To Heaven. Little 1998 TV show with Mark Dacascos in it. I remember as a kid thinking it was pretty cool, but as a guy in his mid thirties now, I'm pretty sure it hasn't held up. Haha
