I had the pleasure. I played snare drum , my boy was drum major , my other potnas played tenor drum, e flat horn, cymbals , and trumpet. Our crab class was out blowing the upper class men. And then coming up the ramp. PLEASE! Fall 81, spring 82, Fall 82, spring 83. OMG ! Best days of my life attending that university. My grandmother, mother and father, older brother and sister , aunt's an uncle's who pledged, we all went to JSU.

JoAnn Maupins Oh ok,your sis might know my uncle!So many other people from my area went to JSU during those years.I would get them to tell me stories about their time on campus and what it was like!I know why they blocked Lynch Street off and didn't know why when I sat in the Plaza 20 plus years ago!A few of kins went to Alcorn and Tougaloo!I remember we took my aunt to a JSU homecoming game and we caught the parade that morning,before the parade was over,she was talking about going the following year! She liked The Soul Sonic Boom,lol.She even brought more family on her side to the game.My pastor from up around the Delta!I wanna come visit that area!My brother(JSU) and our Sunday School teacher(Alcorn) go back and forth about whose better,lol.And we are from Moss Point,Ms!

This 2014 J5 squad was smooth. They were in what we call in the drum major world “frame”. Frame keeps everything in the box regardless of exertion or intensity. If everyone is in the frame and looking alike, then it looks good. But if someone is out -doing another or over-extending then it looks bad and out of frame.
It's the Boom not itself but the Boom Shag ger lagger of the Jackson State Drummajors that set the band itself among the best Black College marching bands.The leg kicks of those majorettes not only hats off to respect the physical conditioning for such high leg kicks isn't that easy its a feat.For me to even think about kicking my leg that high literally over my head.The morning after Ben Gay,pain prescription meds ,muscle relaxers ,u feel me, if not I DO the lower back will have ur ass crying for days.
I never said the boom didn't sound good, but not as powerful and balanced as SU, honestly I believe the boom is the only band that can challenge the Juke, but SU power and balance is ridiculous.
JSU by far the best there is,have never seen a march in close to that, always watching them on utube, please camera man give more attention to the drum line they are heart and soul to the band, check out the movement of their tassel on their hats
