Thanks for this. I just installed the microair today and ran it 5 times before using it on my genmax gm3200i. This thing made such a difference. I have a 13.5k btu AC and it pulled peak 11amps and ran around 1080-1110 watts. I can now run my AC and still have nearly 2000 watts of power left
Did the Micro-Air install this weekend. Jared's walk-through was extremely helpful. Really, it wasn't that complicated and the installation kit for my 15K Coleman Mach had everything needed. Worst part was getting up on the roof! My Honda EU2200i now easily starts the A/C (ECO off) and keeps it running (ECO on). I've had the A/C, a few lights and the TV on at the same time without any issues. Saved the cost of paralleling with another EU2200i!
Thanks, your video was exactly what I needed to ensure I did not screw it up. Got mine installed last night. 🙂One note for others with the same unit (Furrion) that was not obvious to me at first, is the splicing of the last blue wire. Once that is done, reconnect it to the other blue and put it back where it was. That connection can also be loose so be careful when putting things back in the box. It's a tight fit. I spent far more time taking things apart and putting them back than the actual wire installation part. That was the only challenging part.
Thank you so much for this video! I didn't realize I had the wrong wiring diagram until after I opened up the ac cover. Felt hopeless til I found your video! Thanks much for the great info as always.
I installed the micro aire last spring on my camper and love it. We do a lot of NJ state parks (no hook ups) and boondocking. I run my 15,000btu ac unit off of my Honda 2200 generator. Easy install and worth every penny. Great video. Happy Camping.
I took my iPad up on the roof of my Airstream Sport-22FB and with your help installed my EasyStart. It works great! Thank you very much. We enjoy your TH-cam channel. Regards, Tom Moquin
Great video Jared, thanks very much. I have an earlier version AC unit but everything was pretty much the same. I used the wagos that came with the install kit and taped the little levers closed with electrical tape. I have yet to do the 5 cycles as I only have a 3500 watt genny and no pedestal power. I called support and they said that the first learning cycle runs at 40% and then subsequent runs get more optimized at 60% and higher, and that if you do the first cycle on anything less than a 4K Genny it will not be programmed optimally. Oh and the really annoying thing was that every time my AC compressor kicked on before the install, the surge would reboot my starlink router lol. Was driving me nuts! Thanks again!!
I pick up my 2022 GD 2600RB monday and this soft starter is the first thing I'm putting on the unit when I get it home haha! I just printed out the schematic and made one off their instructions from another model, and then went... i bet there's a video. Yep. your diagram matches mine lol!
What's the difference between the SoftStartRV box and the Microair box ?Which one is better? Both are practically the exact same price of 300 bucks. Thanks 👍
I installed one of the Micro-Air on my 15K AC. Went from 46 AMP start to 19 Amps after the five training start. I have an older 3500 Honda generator running on propane. Before I installed the micro-air the Honda would really grunt getting the AC started. Now with the micro-air installed I always have to go and look at my amp meter to be able to tell if the compressor has kicked in or not, no more "GRUNT".
One thing you didn’t mention is the relearn procedure. In rare cases you have to reset to default and have the easy start relearn the unit. I just ran into this problem where the AC wasn’t working properly, the AC compressor would not always kick on or would shutdown prematurely . I did the relearn and the unit is working fine for the last couple months. The installer/engineer from MicroAir told me about it and how to do it. It is also on their website.
I have a Grand Design 367bhs with 2 Coleman Mach ac's. One is 15,000 btu and the other is 13,500. If I install the soft starts on each unit what size generator would you recommend to run both units? Thanks
The Microair was the first upgrade we made to our trailer 2 years ago,30 amp service. I can run my A/C while pluged into my house or on my 3500 inverter generator.
Curious if this only works on rv style air conditioners or could this be adapted to work with a window unit air conditioner. Planning on putting a small WU in a box truck conversion and I'm worried about the amp draw, especially the surge when the compressor kicks on. Havent seen much info on this idea. For reference im not trying to be able to run a unit solely off generator or shore power. Going for solar charged, deep cycle battery unit then into the AC but I have yet to see a window unit that doesn't surge past 40-50 amps.
Just installed two last week on 15K & 13K units and can run both AC's at the same time off of 30 amp shore service and also from Firman 2900 generator. Love your vids.....
As usual, great video! I've really been a fan of your channel lately. Thanks for all the good videos! I love all the electrical type stuff you include... and my wife likes the ones where you show things in your RV! I'm waiting to see if you do one on the Fridge Defend ARP though.... I just installed one of those in mine. It wasn't too bad, and I love the information I can glean from it now! (I installed it inside my unit so I could interact with it rather than behind the fridge.) It seems like it is right up your alley though. I just installed one of these MicroAir Easy Start 364 on my 13.5k but Dometic Brisk Air 2 about 2 months ago. I ordered it straight from MicroAir (due to fear of getting fake parts from Amazon) and they had a $30 off coupon, so that was nice. Install was pretty easy, the hardest part for me was figuring out where to mount it... I didn't really like where I ended up putting it but for my unit there weren't many "mounting" options. As far as the use, it looks like it has knocked my cranking amps down to around 17ish amps (that's the best reading I could get out of my amp meter) so I am very happy with that! I didn't really have issues starting it up with my Champion Duel Fuel generator even when running on propane, but I still believe it helps and I didn't want to go with one of the $10 dumb start capacitors! All in all, I love this thing! I'll also add that I found some of the WAGO lever nuts that come in different configurations (2,3,5, etc... wires) that make connecting multiple wires really easy and to me seems more secure and cleaner looking than crimping and using wire nuts. (Especially for the blue wire that had 3 wires combined... so much nicer!) I'll also add that when "testing" the MicroAir Easy Start following some of the information in the install guide it says this: "...if you turn off the compressor at the thermostat when it is running then turn it on right away, EasyStart will prevent the compressor from starting for five minutes. If the compressor starts sooner, you have a wiring problem." Mine was actually restarting back in 3 minutes, and even though everything was confirmed when hooking it up and everything seemed to be working as it should, this 5 minute rule still threw me, so I called them. They informed me that on the newer units that time is now 3 minutes... so I was happy to hear that! Anywho, thanks again for another great video. Looking forward to more!
For me living in California, only hot places I would be staying at would have full hookups like Laughlin Nevada Koa at the Avi Casino. I’d never boondock in a desert. Most camping boondock spots for me is in the mountains or beach and in the summer they always cool down at night.
Jered: At 3:15 you mention that if there is a start capacities on the air condition it should be disabled or removed. Is there such a start capacitor on the Furrion? If so, the video doesn’t show how you removed or disabled it.
Heya, Love you videos! I'm just about to do this install on my Furrion.... My one question is when you discharged the capacitor where/how did you bridge the terminals? tia
No it just needs the first few times of starting to learn and then it is good for the life of it. If you uninstall it and move it to a new Ac you have to do the fist few as a process again but definitely not every time it disconnects from power
Need to do this update to my Coleman A/C. My A/C are very loud outside and inside when running, any suggestions on how to make them quieter? Thanks for the great video, keep them coming!!
Can you make a comparison video comparing the least expensive versions to the most expensive versions and explain why there's such a large price difference?
How did that mounting location go for you? I installed one of these recently on my furion but I zip tied it to the vent opening near the electrical box, didn't think the double sided tape would old up.
I really like your how to videos especially on wiring I know basics and you simplify it so much thank you so much because some of the tasks look way harder then thay really are and it's reassuring to those that have the capability but not the brains again thank you and keep up the good work
Why don't they just install these at the factory? Are there upgrade options to get it that way? Are there any manufacturers that just provide that as standard? What are the downsides??? (except maybe a small extra price hike on the end product)
Thanks for the demo Jared, I've been told that the best way to start the AC is to turn the fan on at the thermostat and let it run a couple minutes then switch to cool. Do you agree?
Jarrod, would it be difficult to retrofit an Onan 4000w Generator to a travel trailer? My brother has one with only 16 hours on it and is offering to give it to me. I’d rather have one permanently mounted than carry portables. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
Jared, Thanks for all your informative videos! I have 2 Coleman AC units on my 40'- 5th whl RV. Using solar with 1300wts / 400amh BB, should I put these on both units? Thoughts?!! Thanks Larry
No. The purpose is to engage the compressor. The load required to engage it is very high, let's say 3000 watts. Once it is engaged and cooling - the operating power will range around 1300 watts to 1800 watts depending on your model. A generator can easily handle the operating watts, but only a few can handle the engaging watts.
No, the cooling capacity does not go down after installing a soft start. But, it does take a little longer for the air to blow as cool as it does without one. Soft starts slowly ramp up the compressor/motor, so there isn’t a big influx all at once. Soft starts are more gentle on compressors/motors, which are better on them in the long run.
As usual a great video. I have a harbor freight 2500Kw inverter generator. There is not a 30 amp outlet on the generator. Will that generator be sufficient to run the air with this device on the trailer a/c?
Hey Jared, we enjoy and appreciate all your videos! They are a huge help! Have you heard of the newer SoftstartRV which looks like a “plug and play” version of this? I’d be very interested in your opinion on those. Thanks!
Thanks Jared, good video. Really liked your video on the Smart Transfer Switch. Will be implementing many of your ideas on my new 5th wheel this summer.😀
This system works by putting a time delay relay in the fan start circuit so that the fan and compressor aren't starting at the same time. Motor loads have something called in-rush current during start. Starting the fan a few seconds later than the compressor significantly reduces the total in-rush current which should avoid overloading the generator. Just thought explaining how it works would help people understand that it isn't a scam.
HiJared, I enjoy your channel, your energy, and when you do Campendium videos also. I have been watching your videos for almost two years. Keep up the great work. I am glad it is start to opening up. I started on May 1 traveling. I may had been a little early. I just started this new TH-cam channel. I have just put up my first two RVing videos. I just wish I had your talent. Don
Great Video Jared, I wonder what the Inrush is before and after the Install. This Device Looks a lot like a Hard Start Kit with Variable Voltage (bath fan control/ Rheostat)? 👍
MicroAir has a video on their channel that shows the difference. I can't remember the numbers off the top of my head, and I know it will vary from situation to situation. I don't have the fanciest amp meter (it's a Southwire 21550 from Lowes) but it showed 17 amps when starting up my 13.5k Dometic Brisk Air 2 after install. I'll admit that I didn't get a reading before installing it, but my unit has a 68A LRA listed on its wiring schematics sheet.
Some ac units already have a start capacitor and those that don’t a start capacitor can take a very small edge off the starting current but the Easy Start we installed is much more sofisticated and can do much more than take the edge off. It’s proven to most the time take the starting current and cut it in half.
Once again, another great video and another upgrade that I'm saving and planning to to do on the rig as well. I have read that this can allow the A/C to be used when plugged into a common 15 or 20 amp home outlet. Any thoughts on that? I'm wondering if there is still too much draw to support a 15 or 20 amp outlet and the fire risk too great to safely use?
It can but it would be the only thing on for a 15,000 btu ac to not over draw on a 15 amp breaker. If it’s 20 amp or a 13,000 btu ac you have a little wiggle room to have a couple small things on.
Hi.. looking for an update, please. I know y'all switched rigs, but I think you had this part installed on your old unit, for a decent amount of time so I'm curious if you'd still go with this brand? Amazon doesn't have it, but etrailer does. Were you happy with how it performed over time?
@@AllAboutRVs thank you, appreciate the feedback. Hope you're enjoying your Grand Design. We have the same model, just a few years (2018) older. Thanks again!
Wago connectors are great. They don’t put the stress on wires, that typical wire nuts do. They also take the guesswork out of knowing whether you crimped wires tight enough too. Hutch Mountain now utilizes Wago’s in their install kit.
Hi … Help , I have a Furrion I think the same model . The black wire , for the outside fan I left behind, where does that connect or does it just remain on the spade ? Anyone?
@@Worthrhetime, I think my issue is I could never get a clear view of what Jared’s electrical box looked like with this piece and his description wasn’t clear. I currently have the two blue wires together in with the black whereas I believe one should be on the top post and the other spliced in with the black on the bottom. I’ll need to trace those back and fix my issue.
@@rmnpcoloradohummmm …. Not sure. My issue was the one black wire that was left on the spade after everything else was done. I looked at the wire diagram on the unit and saw where it “ the black on the spade “ needed to connect with the blue . A wago connector later it was running perfectly. I’m in Colorado as well . They are very similar, the Soft start RV and the Micro Air Easy Start. I think the Micro Air has a Bluetooth model now. Either will be good, some try to compare it to a hard start capacitor which is not comparable.
This is what they say about the warranties on the site. They offer a "Double Down warranty" that this is referring to: "Some RV owners worry that their installation of an EasyStart 364 might in some way void the manufacturer’s warranty on their rooftop AC unit’s compressor motor. Legally, it shouldn’t. But you never know what a manufacturer might assert. Micro-Air is quite confident that its product cannot damage your compressor. Worry no more! This inexpensive Extended Warranty covers your AC unit’s compressor motor for the duration of your AC manufacturer’s warranty if it will not cover the repair or replacement of the compressor under warranty."

This is one of the better install videos. I like the way it shows the wires on the compressor and OL.
Thanks!
We added this to our RV last fall. It works great and our 2000 watt Honda generator will now run the AC when boondocking. Really nice addition.
Great explanation! Being an electrical engineer and electrician myself, I feel an everyday RV owner can install this with little or no trouble at all.

Thanks Jared, good video. Really liked your video on the Smart Transfer Switch. Will be implementing many of your ideas on my new 5th wheel this summer.😀
Jared, you’re the best.
Very useful info, I am looking in to buying the same AC from Furrion.
Stay safe.
Thanks! Just ordered mine!
What would be the reason to use the easy start over any other capacitor on the market that are $15
Some ac units already have a start capacitor and those that don’t a start capacitor can take a very small edge off the starting current but the Easy Start we installed is much more sofisticated and can do much more than take the edge off. It’s proven to most the time take the starting current and cut it in half.
I thought the new Furion unit came with integrated soft start, so it didn’t need this
Once again, another great video and another upgrade that I'm saving and planning to to do on the rig as well.
Yes we have been happy with it, we even moved it over to the new RV and is working great.
@@AllAboutRVs thank you, appreciate the feedback. Hope you're enjoying your Grand Design. We have the same model, just a few years (2018) older. Thanks again!
I wish you'd come through NWPA, I have a solar system and 2 of the micro starts to install lol But seriously
Have you ever used Wago connectors on wires?
Wago connectors are great. They don’t put the stress on wires, that typical wire nuts do. They also take the guesswork out of knowing whether you crimped wires tight enough too. Hutch Mountain now utilizes Wago’s in their install kit.
Always a wealth of information. Thank you
Thank you for great details verification of connection tips
What's the difference between easy start and hard start and why couldn't you just buy a capacitor off of Amazon and put that on?
Thanks Jared great video as always.
Jared why this vs SoftstartRV
Hi … Help , I have a Furrion I think the same model . The black wire , for the outside fan I left behind, where does that connect or does it just remain on the spade ? Anyone?
Did you ever figure this out? I have the same issue as my fan is not kicking on, thereby creating an over current situation.
@@rmnpcolorado yes I did , give me minute and I can give you some help …
@@rmnpcolorado the black fan wire connects to the blue wires .
R U working on a Furrion , Grand Design?
How has the easy start held up?
Thank you Jared, always helpful...
Awesome video. Thank you.
So the soft start isn’t as good as the easy start?
They are very similar, the Soft start RV and the Micro Air Easy Start. I think the Micro Air has a Bluetooth model now. Either will be good, some try to compare it to a hard start capacitor which is not comparable.
Has anyone run into problems with the Air Conditioner Manufacturer voiding the warranty?
Does this device effect the warranty on the ac units??
This is what they say about the warranties on the site. They offer a "Double Down warranty" that this is referring to:
"Some RV owners worry that their installation of an EasyStart 364 might in some way void the manufacturer’s warranty on their rooftop AC unit’s compressor motor.
Anyone have experience running a 13.5K AC with East Start and a 2000W generator? I have a Champion 2000W generator (2000W Peak / 1700W Continious).
