Chrono cross is one of the best rpg ever made
My friend played FF VI as an adult. He couldn't believe that this game came out 30 years ago and that it would impress him more than many AAA games.
FF6 will get some love in ten years after FF7 is done. Hopefully. They did mention it would take considerable time if they remade it. But it deserves it.
It's really not likely. They already said it'll take longer than 7 and then fan base is no where on par with 7s
What about xenogears. We didn’t even get a completed first release and it’s still my favorite jrpg of all time. It totally needs a remake that takes a decade to make.
So close to 100k my dude! I subbed back when you were at 1k all those years ago. Keep it up buddy!
Great ending by the way jajaja thumbs up y saludos desde Argentina
I am playing Phantasy Star 4 right now. Great rpg, lots of grinding to do. Keep up the good work, Erick!
It's a little known fact that Muscovy Ducks are either huge fans of Chrono Trigger or Chrono Cross but not both.
snes was great to grow up with.
Zelda and Lufia 2 were my first rpgs and I am glad I got my hands on them.
So close to 100k man, you got this!
I played/replayed most of the listed games in my adulthood.. for me personally story wise the best game is Terranigma (which isn't listed).. The game story hit me so hard I went and told my wife the game whole story 😂
Not having The 7th Saga on any top 10 list for SNES RPGs is a travesty. It’s the Peak of Enix pre merger.
FF6 is the GOAT of the 16 bit era.
i like FF6 but for me chrono trigger is better... and secret of mana / seiken densetsu 3 has multiplayer...
I've played FFVI more than any other 16-Bit RPG, it's my favourite of that era.
Cool video, cheers.
The ducks never get old bruh! Even when we do.
Top stuff, ty bro.
Going to like a bunch of your stuff, and comment. Try to get you over 100,000 subs!!!
Good list!
That ending trigger>cross, any day. Bok bok! Great comparison. Looking forward to your ps2 version of this.
FF6 is still the greatest gaming experience I’ve ever had. When this came out, I didn’t expect anything to be better than FF4, A Link To The Past, or Shining Force 2. But when I played this, it was just phenomenal. Still is every time. A remake of it, and a Shining Force Collection, are the two main things I want to happen in gaming. Shining Force Collection would be 1-3, and Shining In The Darkness, and Shining The Holy Ark.
It would be so great!
Great list btw. :)
Chrono Trigger was the very first JRPG I’ve played growing up. Second was FF3 or FF6 here in the states. I’ve been hooked ever since. Rebirth drops in a few days, there goes my weekend.
The Super Nintendo and PlayStation 1 JRPG Juggernauts blessed to see all from 1980-Now
some good NES and sega that rival some of the SNES and PS1, they feel more like snes rpgs than as NES/Sega rpgs, lol:
1. Crystalis (NES)
2. Willow (NES)
3. Phantasy Star 1 (Sega)
4. Ultima series (NES, I like U4: quest for the avatar, but I've not really played the others, yet, laughs)
@@redmoonbloodmoon3161cool I already know this seen all from 1980-Now enjoy life
Erick. I beg of you. Please make a third video. About your fav music.
True, I've always loved both FFVI and Chrono Trigger since the first time I played it, and they still are my top favorites on the SNES today. Although, yes, I'd rank FFVI very slightly above CT for similar reasons to yours. As for other games on the list, titles such as FFIV and Secret of Mana (also my favorites) aren't really recommended to play in their vanilla state IMO because they've been made better through either enhanced ports/re-releases in the case of FFIV or fan-made improvement patches in the case of SoM. A shame FFV doesn't make it on the list since its original SNES version never officially came out outside of Japan.
The only other game I've played and finished on this entire list is Illusion of Gaia, also the only game from the SoulBlazer trilogy I've ever finished. Man, that trilogy could benefit from a modern re-release along with fully-updated, UNCENSORED translation because they've been so forgotten. If they could remake ActRaiser, I don't see why they can't give the SoulBlazer trilogy the same treatment.
And, of course, those Chrono fans who are still salty that they got Chrono Cross instead of the true "Chrono Trigger 2" they've always dreamed of. 🤣
I played/replayed most of the listed games in my adulthood.. for me personally story wise the best game is Terranigma (which isn't listed).. The game story hit me so hard I went and told my wife the game whole story 😂
Wow I agree with almost all your choices
When I was young Earthbound, Breath of Fire 2, FF6, and Chrono Trigger were my favorites. I am very story/immersion focused though. Gameplay just needs to not be frustrating for me to like it.
My favorites on this list are: Final Fantasy IV and VI, and Earthbound. I agree with your views on Chrono Trigger. Earthbound eliminates random encounters by automatically winning them, if you're strong enough. I don't know any other game that does that
I'm always mad at the Only in America rule, cuz Final Fantasy 5, DQ 6, and Ys 5 are some of my favorite jrpgs on the snes.
I also feel Terranigma fans' tears.
YES I DID SAY DRAGON QUEST 6 AND YS 5, I ENJOYED THOSE BASTARDS, OKAY? And sorry but yes I also like FF5 more than FF4 and FF6, is actually my favorite FF.
Bro please make a top ten for the ps1 and ps2.
thats right! Chrono Trigger number 1! FF6 was cool but i did enjoy FF4 more.
Lufia 2 is amazing.
Personally I think I would say:
1 - FFVI
2 - Lufia 2
3 - Chrono Trigger
4 - Super Mario RPG
5 - Secret of Mana
That's roughly where I would place these games IMO. I do think Chrono Trigger tends to be overrated.
In fact if we included unlocalized games (which I did play) I would put Trials of Mana and Tales of Phantasia above Chrono Trigger.
@@JaidynReiman for me... if I had to try to rank them... a tentative ranking...
FF 6 > BoF 2 > Lufia 2 > Ogrebattle: MotBQ > Tactics Ogre: LUCT > CT > ToP > 7th Saga > SoM > SoE > SD3 > Crystalis > PE 1 > Grandia 1 > Ultima 4: QftA > FF 1 > Willow > Phantasy Star 1 > DW 1
(I've not really gotten into playing any sega games unfortunately, except for phantasy star 1, which is an incredible rpg for its time, and maybe also a tiny bit of playing of shining force 1, but that's it)
I like Earthbound but I would put Mario RPG as number 1. I never really got into any of the other SNRS RPGs back in the day and just played each for no more than 3 hours within the past couple of years
So the preference between FF6 and CT seems to come down to whether one likes adult themes or fun, lighthearted themes more.
CT has more colors and less sad. FF6’s battle system has lots of fun mechanics to play with, but at the end of the day most of them are just dead weight and are redundant or strictly inferior to the best spammable attacks. I suppose one could say the same of CT’s plethora of techs, but they allow for various strategies with different party combinations throughout the game, and the animations are fun to check out.
CT is pixel and animation perfection if they did it like No No Kuni it would be great...I don't want an octopath traveler version of CT that seems wrong for some reason
@@eddy5097 I do, but I could also go for a Ni no Kuni version as well. Never thought about that.
@@captaincruise8796 when I played it back on PS3 there was this beautiful mushroom forest to explore and the whole time I was thinking...this is how Chrono trigger should get remade
that can be one complaint of FF 6:
they literally threw in every type of mechanic into the game, with each of its characters, which do make them unique, but ultimately, they're not all equal to each other, unfortunately
(but despite that, FF 6 is still the best FF game and the best RPG of all time, for me)
I dont' care for ranking my top 10 specifically. I will say though that I like lufia 2 more than all the other turn based rpgs. I like the combat more, and the ancient cave is endless fun. I do think the game has a major difficulty nose-dive after the final time you beat Gades which is kinda sad though.
Secret of Mana was hands down my fave back in the day just because it was my first decent action rpg and the music was mindblowing (and the first game with mindblowing music), but it doesn't age very well due to the combat mechanics actually being quite shallow. I prefer final fantasy 4 over 6 because 6 had more annoying enemies gameplay wise, I like a 5 person party more than a 4, and honestly. The story in 6 just seems goofy to me. It tries to be dark and serious but somehow it just seems to cartoonish at the same time that I can't take it seriously and it kinda comes across as cringe to me. FF4's story isn't 'better' per say, but it doesn't try as hard to be so deep so it doesn't backfire on me so much. 6 has better music though, that's for sure.
I like chrono trigger, but 3 person party is the worst, the avoidable combat does nothing for me because like half the badguys are hard-scripted to ambush you at trigger points you cant avoid anyway, and I didn't like how few abilities/spells the cast had. It kinda made it so combat was pretty no-brainer sorta. I also hate op protagonists, and chrono, with the rainbow sword, is better than frog, with the upgraded masemune, with the hero medal. the fudge?
I never got into breath of fire. I did like super mario rpg but only rented it a few times, I really enjoyed it but for some reason after beating it I never really felt the need to play it again. Maybe I'd like it more if I owned it but I never did.
My biggest under-rated game though, other than lufia 2 though is Ogre battle. I LOVE ogre battle. EVERY time I'd goto the video rental store, if I saw ogre battle, that was a near instant pick up for me. I WISH I owned that game. At one point I wanted to buy an N64 just for ogre battle 64 (this was like after the ps3 existed, so way later). But while Iw as willing to pay like $40 for a used n64, the guy wanted over $100 for the ogre battle cartridge. blah. no thanks.
While chrono trigger or Secret of Mana probably has the best music to me. Every time I hear that ogre battle main menu theme (yes I'm aware it's used in tactics ogre too and such), I INSTANTLY get a massive shot of nostalgic glee. I unfortunately don't like tactics ogre much. Tactical rpgs aren't really my thing. I can enjoy them from time to time, and I loved Final Fantasy Tactics, but for some reason I have a hard time getting into other ones. I thought they were the coolest thing ever when they were new too. But for some reason they just rarely click for me. I like how FFT is customizable but not as grindy as Disgaea. All the other ones are less customizable, or if they are, then they seem more grindy. It's hard to get the balance I want.
But yeah, Ogre battle is great. I think it's better than it deserves in my mind just because I really like the art style, the music sound, the presentation with the smaller characters, etc. My only gripe with it is that it is almost like a dept-heaven game in terms of guide-dang-it mechanics for character recruitment and such. I hate that.
For a person who adores Ogre Battle, I'm surprised that there is no mention of Unicorn Overlord. It received a demo a few days ago on most modern platforms and will be out on March 8th. It seems like it would be right up your alley. I'm surprised that Erick hasn't devoted a video to it yet.
Basiscape worked on it, so the music is top tier like you expect out of Hitoshi Sakamoto and his friends.
@@naberiusbuster3489 i was recently made aware of that but last I checked it was for switch or something.
Lufia 2 is easily the best RPG ever made, it's ONLY FLAW, is that it's just too easy...
SoM was really good the very first time you play it, as it does have a really good story and good gameplay, but after that first time, it's not that great of a game anymore, as it's too easy (though, you can always put restrictions/challenges on yourself, of course, like no cheating with chain-casting and/or low clvls and/or low spells/weapons, and/or etc etc etc), and also, while the various weapon tech animations are cool to see, they're just so completely bad in terms of for actual game play (basically they're the exact same issue as with Cyan's techs in FF 6, laughs)
CT is a very good game, but my biggest complaint with it is... lavos... how can you have such a stupid "villain and villain-world plot" for such an amazing game, argh... Magus is way better as the villain... take out lavos and come up with something awesome with magus... or maybe have queen zeal or even schala as the main villain... (and ya, for all of the hype, frog is a bit dissappointing, sighs)
Its also available for the PS4, PS5, and the latest Xbox. They also have the demo up for those platforms as well.@@Ghalion666

I agree with FF 6 being number 1. Both it and Trigger are great but FF 6 DID have a better story even if it was only by a little. It was definitely darker.
Another thing Chrono Trigger is better than FF6 is the character development. Sure, Locke, Terra, Celes, the twins and Shadow are very well developed, but that's less than half the cast, while in CT, all of them are well developed, maybe Ayla a little less, since we only play a mission with her as the main focus, but that was enough to make her more a person than a tool.
Oh you had to hit me with the "Officially released in North America". I was going to say one of the best is Secret of Mana, but my personal favourite and the game I think is better is Terranigma. I just enjoyed Terranigma far more than Mana.
I LOVE YOU BRO
Super Mario RPG Legend of the 7 Stars is my number 1 for sure. Chrono Trigger though is definitely the best by all stats.
I just beat Mario RPG on switch. It was cute but so easy I was getting frustrated. The first boss was the biggest challenge. The rest was a cake walk.
RIP Squaresoft
Seiken Densetsu 3 Tale of Phantasia and Star ocean 1 missing.
I must be the only one that enjoyed Breath of Fire 2: Remastered more than the unbalanced OG version... I beat it, too.
I think ff4 needs a remake where they can fix the stupid fake out deaths and add to it
Great. Terranigma is excluded at the beginning because it had no release in North America...
for me : 1) chrono trigger, 2) secret of mana 3) seiken densetsu 3 4) final fantasy 6...... why ? secret of mana and seiken densetsu 3 can b e played with 2 or 3 players, not final fantasy, and it is so good to multi on those games... and secret of evermore is not very far behind, very good game... but i still doesnt play earthbound and illusion of time so it is not final ranking (except for chrono trigger who will stay first anyway)
7th saga *sad doot noises*
Chrono Trigger deserves the #1 spot, or at least #2. SMRPG is the only one that might beat it. FF6 is great but the final dungeon is just a chore and a grind fest.
Chrono Trigger is "numero 1"!!!
Narrated by Ren Hoeck
I love Chrono Trigger, but I also put FF6 above it, just by a bit.
Illusion of Gaia has got nothing against Terranigma
@@nikolaikolev8433 Thats… objectively wrong. If I was your boss, I’d fire you for that
I played the game and the experience was horrible after entering overworld. The gameplay at first looks better than Blazer and Gaia, but it get so much worse. Most of the people who praise Terranigma didn't even played it, the others who does that probably played completely different game.
@@nikolaikolev8433 Uhh… you enter an overworld after about a few minutes, my guy. And clearly you stopped playing right after cus you have no idea what you’re talking about. You can’t talk about Terranigma without praising its story at the very least, not unless you didn’t play it like a chump
Oh yeah, also, not playing Terranigma and playing a different game are the same thing
@@topfranluis1 Underworld stage wasnt a few minutes. It took at least an hour or so to get through and it was very well done. Overworld is fine at first, it gets bullshit later until end of the game, because of the mechanic that doesn't let you doing more than 1 dmg, only because im 2-3 levels behind. The story is pretty forgettable too. At least there's some decent tracks and visuals.
Chrono trigger number 3…..
I tried so hard to like Secret Of Mana but the gameplay is so dreadful that I couldn't get into it.
The hit detection is atrocious, you often end up just spamming magic with the sprite to mow down bosses for most people.
@thisismyyoutubecommentacco6302 I'm fairly forgiving with games as long as there are other aspects that are redeeming but everything else in the game wasn't good enough for me to overcome it
he never puts a link to the games on his list forcing us to watch the whole video...
I absolutely love Chrono Trigger.
Super Mario RPG over Chrono Trigger? Bruh...
Use the word generic much ?
this list makes no sense
Fans ruin games.
Despite second half of FF6 which except the finale was gruesomely boring, Chrono Trigger didn't had a single minute that can bore me. It outmatch FF6 in almost every way.
I played Chrono Trigger for a few hours a couple years ago and got kinda bored.
Chrono trigger overrated.
I also agree. Among the 16 bit greats, I would put Final Fantasy 6, Super Mario RPG, Ogre Battle, Shining Force 2, Dark Wizard, and Phantasy Star 4 above it.
FFVI is way superior than Chrono Trigger. Not an opinion, just a fact
I love how the ending makes so much sense 😂
I love both games tho
