    your snails might roam around on your hands a little more if you wet them first before handling, they don't really like dry surfaces from what i've found

    • @angielou123
      @angielou123 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think its something to do with the salt in our skin, they dont like it 😊

    • @somedude172
      @somedude172 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      its a combo of both i think. at least with my snails, which ive given up on identifying lol. wetting your hand helps rinse some of the salt off, and the water makes it easier for them to get around since it reduces friction too

    • @ElysetheEevee
      @ElysetheEevee 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually figured since human skin can be a little salty, especially anywhere that gets sweaty, they might not like that or other painful contaminants.

      @@allanjameslopez4227 I wash my hands in destilled water before handling my snails to avoid exposing them to metals and other trace elements from the tap water.
      It's completely unnecessary probably, but since I already have a reverse osmosis machine, I thought why not.

    One way to eliminate mites is to put pine leaves or bark in the terrariums, because it gives a certain grade of acidity to the soil that they can not tolerate.

    You should give away your dirty snail substrate to a friend who gardens, or just use it to top off your potted plants. It is full of good nitrogen from their poop and lots of other essential elements. You can't really compost tarantula substrate, because it may have urticating hairs that could travel throughout the compost. But that snail soil would be excellent!

    Hey Petko! I really hope you catch this comment!!
    love you videos and seeing you began to keep snails makes me so happy! I am curious though wich species you have as there are many, they look like achatina fulica, white jade colourform to me but I'm not sure.. if you don't know the sp you have you may want to find out as each species have different care requirements. But concidering how big they have become you are doing an excelent job :D I would like to point out though that full substrate changes are adviced against because their sub will have beneficial bacteria that are essential for their health, so for a larger enclosure I advice you to keep their old substrate and mix it in with the new and avoid full substrate changes as much as possible, unless there's a serious problem like nematodes. Springtails and woodlice/isopods really help keep their enclosure clean :) mine also go mad for sweetpotato and andive, and if you didn't already a proteine source once a week is also recommended in a form of soaked fishfood or even a prekilled cricket(and they love it lol) another thing is, even though their muscles around the shell is strong, please don't pull them off any surface from their shell, wiggle your finger under their foot to break the vacume instead :D I know your didn't ask for any advice but as you're a new snailkeeper I wanted to point those things out. You're one of my favorite channels and I began keeping tarantulas because of you and my mom hates you for it lol.

    • @MurderouslyNocturnal
      @MurderouslyNocturnal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      One more thing to add: the old substrate looked very wet, a good consistency is when you squeeze it and holds it's shape, but no water comes out, you're good :) too much wetness can be bad for their beautiful shells

    this video reminds me of when i first started keeping bugs. i thought there was mites in my snail enclosure, so i replaced the substrate and left all the decorations in the freezer for a while... turns out they were springtails. i killed/threw out so many springtails, which i deeply regret now, bc ive had a mold problem in that enclosure basically since that happened lmao
