A very nice fact is that in an interview in 2013 he mentioned that the two happiest moments of his life making music were with these two songs, with "She was pretty" was when a music expert told him "you did a very good job with the arrangement", and with "Honey" was when he discovered the chords to make blues but everyone classified "Honey" as a dance song, except two other music experts who, after presenting "Honey" at a show, when they met in the hallway they told him "oh, is that how you play blues?" There was no Internet, Korea was still culturally detached from the rest of the world, thus barely anyone in Korea was aware that blackface is rooted in a painful, deeply racist history. That's why I don't think he should get death threats for this. However, there is absolutely no excuse for blackface or saying the n-word since the 2010's and the rise of the Internet. So many k-pop idols have done this though, which is really disappointing. It's hypocritical to see fans defending those younger idols ("they didn't know better") while trying to cancel JYP for "racism." I'd just like to say that JYP, for the past 20 years, has actually been one of the only figures in k-pop who genuinely appreciates black culture and acknowledges that k-pop is essentially rooted in it (something that most people in the industry ignore). This is shown by how he has dedicated JYPE's dance practice rooms, vocal studios, and producing rooms in honor of influential Black artists and producers, including MJ, Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Dr. Dre, Babyface, and many more. I think this is great because it can educate JYPE's trainees and idols as to just how much American music has been crafted by black people. He has also constantly talked in public about how his own artistry has been deeply influenced by black culture. All in all, yes, the blackface in 1997 is embarrassing, but he has since become one of the only champions for black culture in k-pop today. All my respect to him.
