When he says “that’s wonderful news” and she says “it is”? You can see when she looks at him that she realizes he loves her soo much that even though he’s dying inside he just wants her to be happy. Nothing but gut wrenching for anyone who watches this scene. Incredible acting!!

This scene is one of the most powerful in the movie. It’s truly heartbreaking you can tell they both still love each other. As soon as she tells him she’s pregnant they both start crying. He knows that’s it for them as well as does she. You can tell both of their hearts are broken. I cry whenever I watch this. Sad thing is you can tell they both still wanted to be together. That’s why she tells him she’s sorry. She knows her having a child with another man completely blows any kind of future they could’ve had together. You can also tell they both wished they could’ve still been together. Just so damn sad.

I always really liked Christian Bale's character in this movie. A good, smart, decent man whose life fell apart after one bad, unlucky, accident. It's heart-breaking really, because you see he's humble, you see he's trying to do good, but what's happened has happened and you can't undo it. Fate doesn't choose sides depending on whether you're a good human being. Unfortunately.
I still have the final scene in my mind, how he sits alone in his house. I always saw it as a symbol that he is haunted and resigned to his fate. He killed someone in an accident, because of that he lost the only girl he ever loved, because of that and no one looking after him, his brother went down a wrong path and ultimately died, and at the end he had to go to a really dark place and willingly kill (murder) another human being to avenge his brother's death. In the movie you saw Russell contemplate whether to kill DeGroat, or not. But he just didn't have anything in his life that would hold him back, no reason to let it go and not avenge his brother, which really could've been only if he had love and family. So he went to a dark place there's no coming back from really and now IMO, he's just haunted, resigned, accepting his fate, quietly running out the clock, understanding that his life has unfortunately gone wrong in too many ways for it to ever be the life he wants to fully live and enjoy. Perhaps he will find some measure of peace down the line, but it's just a broken life.
It's tragic, it's really sad, because only good human beings end-up this way. A selfish, arrogant or bad person would shrug everything off, but to someone who cares a lot about his and others' lives, it's crippling.

Best comment about this movie, by far.
Even considering I've seen A LOT of films, I'm 59 yo, this one is in my top five.
Because all those actors and actress, because the script, because the acting, because simply it's a movie about the fact to be human, for the best like for the worst.

At the end of this clip, Russel wants to call her back, hug her, tell her how much he loved her.. But how terrible the life gets, you cannot undo your mistakes. You cannot go back to that time. Such an underrated film. Not only Out of the furnace, but also "Hostiles". Such powerful movies. But, Out of the furnace always wrenches my heart. Whenever I watch this film, my brother and I always hold hands together assuring themselves that we would always be there for eachother; no matter what.

This scene feels so surreal. I spent 3 years in prison thinking about my girl non stop waiting for the day I got released so I could see her again. When I finally got released I realised she moved on her with life while I spent the last 3 years staying in the same place. It wasn’t meant to be and had to let go of her. Probably the hardest thing I had to do.

I hope the tradition of real cinema will never be lost. This scene gave me chest pain because of the sadness and depth of it. That is real art; trascending any screen you're watching it and getting right under your skin. Chapeau!

She should've stayed and waited for him. He loved her and made a mistake. Eventually he lost everyone but at least he got revenge for Rodney.

The way they moved the plot forward was brilliant. They didn't give all the details like how long he was in prison for or why she left him necessarily because it doesn't matter. Life happens, things happen. The movie is more about how he deals with it. Subtle and brilliant.
