I think I booked this? If I remember right, we had some more punk-oriented bands that day, and I got a last minute call that Converge and Channel were coming through NJ, so we threw them on the end of the bill and some of the mohawk crowd were cool enough to stick around and check them out.
Its amazing how polished and accurate converge was even in their early days live. They hit every note within the chaotic chord structure and the time structure never deviates from what they had planned. Its remarkable, they knew exactly what they wanted when they wrote their music and they can produce the sounds to replicate the feelings they wanted to express perfectly.
This is incredible quality for something from back in 1995. Can’t believe it’s taken this long for this show to turn up. Thought there wasnt a recorded Converge show out there that I’d seen. Thanks for sharing this.
It’s just crazy to think how fresh metallic hc was at this time and they were still doing something different. I’d say there were bands that were trying different stuff around this time were Turmoil, Deadguy, Botch and Coalesce
Dario Fernando I forgot Candiria! Meshuggah first ever US show was in NY and they requested Candiria open, people moshed super hard to Meshuggah which is crazy to think about. Checking out channel btw!
I think you have to look at converge as two different bands. 91/92-2000 Aaron Dalbec, Jeff Feinberg, Damon, Kurt, Jake Their influences in this period were very much a hardcore band with rock and metal influences as well. A fusion of all. Hell, buried but breathing is basically a youth crew song. Jake sang and wrote more straight angry hardcore style yelling vocals mixed with early emotional melodic hardcore songs.Original demo tapes have the XCongergeX label. The shows pulled in a more straight forward hardcore following. They wrote the music for 2 guitarists. There was less structure and more experimenting. But if you go back to the first 7inch, and of the rare tapes or halo in a haystack in an entirely different band. 2001 Jane Doe on Kurt, Jake, Nate Newton, Ben Koller At this point the band and Kurt wrote the music for one guitarist. Jake had found his true voice and form and things would never be the same. Performances became more of that and less of an intimate hardcore show. Even his style now does not lend as much to crowd mike participation or even screaming holding the mic with one one hand. He’s cupping it and giving his all to perform a sound and feeling.
It’s incredible this exists.

It’s more incredible that afi used to be a hardcore band
Glad this was top reply because I was thinking the exact same thing
I guess you don’t have the dvd lol
Dead is such a good song. Seeing it played this early is so cool.
I love that Converge basically started as a brutal cross between fugazi, slayer, embrace and SSD.
Two Day Romance is the most epic metal romantic song ever. Shallow Breathing is the greatest metal segue to anything.
0:13 - Shallow Breathing
1:50 - Two Day Romance
6:05 - Dead
10:18 - Becoming A Stranger
14:11 - Divinity
19:33 - For You

Holy Moly this is bonkers. So much has changed, and so much is exactly the same.
I didn't know they were around THAT long! I discovered them in 2002
Thats when they started going downhill!
So so rare to see footage of Divinity played live. Which would be my favorite song

Does anyone have a setlist for this show by any chance?
Basically all of caring and killing
I hear a lot of old-school emo in their early material, I feel like that's not really spoken about
Erik & Damon era was the best!
Erik?
sliverradio Erik Ralston the bass player
@@NewYorkDetective that's Jeff Fineberg
So this era pre Jane Doe, YFM, AWLWLB, No Heroes is better? Nate is incredible. Stop trying to be edgy
@@motherfungler420 Jane Doe was the start of the downfall....the sweet spot of Converge was always the split with ANB
How tf its this happened
i wanna be dude in the jankos
Who shit in the pit
What are these songs?
before kurt got fat and bannon went bald
I just fast forwarded 30 times through this entire video not one vocal part. Wtf
