Fantastic interview with Dr. Lovász. Thank you! One question about potassium. I believe I heard Dr. Lovász mention that potassium is irritative to the bladder so those with IC should stay away from it yet also said bananas are generally safe for those with IC to consume. Is the amount of potassium in bananas insignificant to cause irritation, or does the composition of the potassium from bananas change one inside the body? Thanks again for putting out a very informative interview!
Dr.Lovasz’s response: Bananas generally contain about 400-450 mg of potassium. The daily potassium requirement for an adult is usually around 2000-3000 mg (although this may vary depending on age, gender and individual health conditions). However, it is possible that eating one banana a day could make symptoms worse in people with IC/BPS. Every patient is different, so you could try eating a banana just once to see if your condition gets worse. If it does, don't eat bananas, but if there is no significant worsening, you can eat bananas despite the dietary restrictions.
Thank you for your response, Dr. Lovász. You are so knowledgeable and kind and help me a lot. Potassium (and even one banana with lower amount of potassium) seems to trigger me. How can I and others with IC who are so sensitive to potassium get the daily recommended amount?
