One Year In, Any Regrets With The 2023 Toyota Tundra?

  • This wasn’t even the Toyota Tundra I was supposed to have, but last April, I had to make a move into something a bit cheaper. Was purchasing this 2023 Toyota Tundra SR5 A Wise Decision? Here are my thoughts 1 year later.

@Toyota needs to give this man a free truck, whatever model he wants, because he is the MOST loyal Tundra guy out there. And he is the most thorough in his inspection of these trucks.

OK, lets get some thing straight. I just bought a '23 1794 Hybrid one year ago in 3 / 23. Got all the bells and whistles. I am 65 and this will probably be my last truck.
You have to step up like I did.
1987 : F-150 single cab, 4 speed manual, Granny gear.
    1999 : F-150 Lariat, extended cab, 6 ft. bed. 346,000 miles
    2023 : Tundra Hybrid 1794
This is how I got to the Tundra. Took my whole life to get here. Besides my wife having 2 Avalons. A 1996 and a 2008 Avalon. Loved them both. Still have the "08.
Point is, you have to work your way up to the top of what you want. Unless you win the lotto. I knew this from the start. It is a long road but every step you take is worth it. Hang in their.
One thing is do not make yourself truck poor. I put my money on a house and keep my old truck. Was house poor for about 5 yrs, but after that we were golden.
Save every dime you can. Want a boat, I did. Sold it 5 yrs later. Gets old. Never used it after first couple of yrs.
Do not through away money on toys. Invest , you will understand later in life. 10 K in 30 yrs turns into 500K .

@10:30: rear seat space going from Crew Max to Double Cab is the only thing you may have lost out on. To me, Pano roof or hybrid engine are not deal breakers but rear seat space for those who need it is priceless. I do not understand why Toyota reduced the space in the rear of the cab of the Tundra. Makes no sense.

I rented a 2022 SR5 for 4 days in 2022 and absolutely loved it. The only things I really missed vs my TRDOR Tacoma was the dual climate and heated seats. It had the roll down rear window and I kind of wished it was a regular slider, but still liked it. Just another reminder of needs vs wants in a vehicle.

I have the exact same truck just a 2024. So far this truck is amazing, and I do agree about the back seat. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a crew max with a 6.5 bed. My teenage kids do sit in the back and it’s not terrible but they don’t have as much room as they had in my double cab Silverado. In all I’m super impressed with the Tundra!

A double cab wouldn't work for me but great that it works for you. Black with chrome trim is one of the few acceptable uses of chrome on a vehicle. Another is 1794, if you're going with the ranch look you've got to go all in with the chrome.

I was torn on getting crew max or 6.5 bed. I went with crew max 5.5 bed. I use bed extender which helps for lack of bed space. The crew and 6.5 bed was just to big, long. Nothing is perfect. Always a compromise. I feel the inside storage and people carrying was worth it over longer bed space. As long as i can haul my motorcycle n back, I'm good!

Predict for the Tundra is its longevity. I just don’t think they would last like the simple V8 Tundra. You don’t keep them for a long time so for you it would be a good choice! Maybe it's just me, but I feel like I see way more new gen Tundras in my area/surrounding areas than I've ever seen old gen Tundra's. Maybe Toyota is selling a good amount of the new gen's.
Also at work, I primarily drive a 2007 Tundra Double Cab now and It's been very enjoyable but there are few things I've had to adjust to.
    1. Distance/Corners - It's been somewhat hard for me to judge especially when parking, how close I am to another vehicle, object, The one thing I've sort of learned is that if you think your close, then your likely 10 miles away from hitting anything and can pull up/back up more. Also when turning in or doing anything to where you have to watch your corners it's been hard for me to judge how far my corner is from object, vehicle. But the same thing applies to that if you think your too close you can afford to swing out, move closer to vehicle, etc. Because you are not even close to hitting anything it just looks that way.
    2. Braking - Everything is good with that, but in situations where you for some reason have to brake hard it just feels like your not going to stop, but you always do.

I did the same man, I had a very nice TRX level 2 I ordered back in 2021 and took 8 months to get, after having it for awhile with every option it was like... Meh... Before that I had a nicely equipped LTZ 2500HD but it was just too much for a daily. I was always a Tundra guy before my Toyota hiatus and decided to look at the new ones. After sitting and driving in all trims I determined the SR5 was the best option for me, I personally don't think Toyota trucks are on par with GM and Ram ergonomics and fit n finish and materials and that's my honest opinion. I also don't think any of these tundra's are worth over $60K in any trim level, just not. I really like my SR5 with the Convenience and Tech packages. I actually didn't want the 14 screen because it's too big and doesn't really do anything but make the radio font's bigger, I mean I had a TRX with the huge iPad screen and it's really not needed IMO. 8 inch screen I like better. I do miss the sunroofs and didn't get any of the plugs in the bed but whatever, I paid $51K for an Army Green with Softex and has all the cruise/lane departure stuff. Overall I'm happy with my purchase. Considering my TRX msrp was $94K and my 2500hd was $74K, I think my SR5 is a bargain in todays madness.

The new gen Tundra platform is a completely different driving experience from the old gen. The old gen didn’t have bad brake dive, but there just isn’t any here now. Excellent brake package on these trucks. But I will say, in the hybrids, those brakes take a minute to get used to because of the brake re-gen.

Great truck to have as a Tundra enthusiast, tough truck to have as a Tundra channel owner because not many have that. So I traded for a naturally aspirated 5.7, to be able to review, compare and contrast for viewers.
