  • In the United States, lawmakers are scrambling to agree on a plan to raise the amount of money the government can borrow. If no deal can be reached by June 1st, the country would default on its debt - a move that could have a catastrophic effect on the US and global economy. But what exactly is the "debt ceiling," and why does it matter so much?

      This crisis has happened three times before: 1995, 2011, and 2013. Each time, a Republican Congress thought that it could get policy concessions out of a Democratic president by threatening a default. It didn't work, but they still do it.

    FYI The debt ceiling is a decision to pay for the things they've already purchased. If you want to discuss spending cuts, do it during the annual budget passed by congress. You don't just not pay the bill.
    The annual budget seems to be democrats showing with a list of spending demands, and republicans showing up with a similar list. They agree that a budget can pass if both sides can spend whatever they want. Fiscal responsibility only becomes a talking point after the fact.

      @delos2279 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @falloutking2819 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@delos2279 To be fair, the democrats are equally guilty, we need to find a way to bipartisan decrease spending (or optimize how the funding is used)

    • @delos2279
      @delos2279 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@falloutking2819 Depends on the objective. Of course a split congress takes both sides to compromise. But on the actual issue, Republicans are MORE guilty of increasing the national debt that they claim to care more about.
      Or rather, for Republicans, taxes are the real issue. They don't really care about the debt and would rather decrease taxes and increase the debt, than anything else. You wouldn't know from their rhetoric but it's their actual policies.
      Meanwhile I agree with the economist here (nearly all economists). Government spending is perfectly fine, particularly in an economic downturn. But taxes need to cover most of it. And certainly threatening default should not be a partisan bargaining chip. Even threatening that like republicans always do can already worry creditors and increase interest rates. Which means paying more interest on the debt, that republicans also keep increasing more.

    • @falloutking2819
      @falloutking2819 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@delos2279 That’s a fair representation and well thought arguement I thank you for that. I’m certainly not disagreeing, as I’ve seen the policy decisions for the last few administrations (you never listen to the politicians speeches, just look at the laws they write). I just have a tendency to focus on bipartisan support in comment sections, because otherwise these debates turn into partisan cesspools. Which I genuinely think as a voting base how we got to the place we are at.

    Venturing into the realm of informed speculation:
    In the event of a U.S. default on its debt on June 1st, the interest rate growth on the U.S. federal debt could skyrocket by a staggering 10%. This sudden surge in borrowing costs would lead to an annual dollar value increase of approximately $500 billion in interest payments alone. As for mortgage rates, brace for a significant jump of 2.5%. This would cause a substantial impact on the housing market, with an estimated annual dollar value increase of $200 billion in mortgage expenses for American homeowners.
    If they default, we're all screwed. If the Republican demands are acceded to we're all screwed. If they keep raising the debt limit without funding it and the the many other unfunded budget items we're all screwed. I think we're all screwed ... its just a matter of how long!
