  • The RCA Corporation was a major American electronics company, which was founded as the Radio Corporation of America in 1919. It was initially a patent trust owned by General Electric (GE), Westinghouse, AT&T Corporation and United Fruit Company.
In 1932, RCA became an independent company after the partners were required to divest their ownership as part of the settlement of a government antitrust suit.
An innovative and progressive company, RCA was the dominant electronics and communications firm in the United States for over five decades. RCA was at the forefront of the mushrooming radio industry in the early 1920s, as a major manufacturer of radio receivers, and the exclusive manufacturer of the first superheterodyne sets.
RCA also created the first nationwide American radio network, the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). The company was also a pioneer in the introduction and development of television, both black and white and especially color television.
During this period, RCA was closely identified with the leadership of David Sarnoff. He became general manager at the company's founding, served as president from 1930 to 1965, and remained active as chairman of the board until the end of 1969.

R.C.A. used the 455k.c. superheterodyne sets, any other radio companies who used the same I.F. carrier frequency had to pay royalties to R.C.A. R.C.A. also bought out in 1929 the "VICTOR TALKING MACHINE COMPANY" from eldridge johnson, renaming as" R.C.A. VICTOR COMPANY." R.C.A. had 2 "N.B.C." networks( N.B.C.BLUE/ N.B.C.RED), and the federal government broke that up, the one N.B.C network became A.B.C. R.C.A also introduced the 33 and 1/3 R.P.M. record in the mid 1930's( not columbia records) it did not sell, however it was used in radio stations as transcription recordings. R.C.A. also introduced the 45 R.P.M. record in 1949. R.C.A. did not invent television ,it was invented by farlow farnsworth and david sarnoff did his best to buy out farnsworth, it did not take place. R.C.A. did invent color television and was introduced in 1954( delta gun C.R.T configuration , using dynamic convergence- used until 1980). R.C.A. also made their own vacuum tubes, including C.R.T.'s( E.I.A. code 274)

And I believe Zenith [infamously] refused to license from RCA their color demodulation circuitry; and as such Zenith color televisions always suffered in the color accuracy department.

@@smsstuart , you are correct, zenith used their own video delay/ color demodulation circuits, and used their own video/ audio I.F. separation, and they were known as "BUZZOMATIC" sets, the video signal would spill into the audio signal. no mater what you did in terms of adjustment, you could not get the buzz out. it was terrible on commercial breaks, the video with text being driven so hard would obliterate the audio signal.
