Back in the early 1960s, Mopar had some of the most unique looking cars, and this '62 Imperial LeBaron is no exception. That well used 413 engine sounded healthy, and those floating headlights as well as the suspended taillights give that Imperial so much character!.

That 413 would be a staple in Chrysler’s big cars for years as they were very dependable and you couldn’t kill them if you tried!

This car is the exact duplicate of a car my father had. I drove it hard when I was older around 19. That thing would really go. It rode smooth. Was really hard on gas. This is quite a survivor. Thanks for showing it Lou. That extra floor button on the left is to change the radio stations with your foot.

Wonderful video of Imperial’s most luxurious offering, with its loving owners. LeBaron doors give the impression of a bank vault - very substantial. The highlight was hearing this unmolested LeBaron is driven on the open road to WPC Meets and other shows. Congratulations to Sandy and Woody - and enjoy this beautiful Mopar in good health!

I wouldn't have minded making a trip to Carlisle to see a bunch of antique cars like that '62 Imperial. That LeBaron is what you call the cream of the crop of all Chrysler Corporation cars! You hardly saw LeBarons, and Imperials as a whole, even when they were new. For every one Imperial that Chrysler made, Lincoln built three or four Continentals, and Cadillac made at least 10 of their cars. Seeing a late 1950s to early 1960s Exner-era Imperial is like watching a rolling work of art. You don't see very many today. And I can just picture riding in a '62 Imperial - it must be like floating on a cloud! These cars got lots of exposure in Hollywood films and television sitcoms ("The Beverly Hillbillies" comes to mind, as does "Move Over Darling," with Doris Day).
Thanks once again, Lou! You know I'll be on the lookout! And I hope your Thanksgiving day was great! And I'm wishing a Happy Heavenly birthday to my mom - she would have turned 85! _(11/28/2022)_
P.S. I noticed you did a video on a black '61 Imperial LeBaron. I'm going to take some time to check that one out!

Automotive journalist Tom McCahill jokingly called the 1956 Imperial taillights "sparrow strainers" back in 1956 in Mechanix Illustrated. I think that comment may be what Lou was referring to. McCahill also loved the Imperial LeBaron and owned and drove a new one every year. Thanks, Lou, for showing us this one. Kinda reminds me of Milburn Drysdale's car on The Beverly Hillbillies and that music they played when it drove up.

Motor Trend did a comparo test in '62 with the Imperial, Cadillac and Lincoln. They loved this LeBaron and said that, only as with the Rolls-Royce, people looked at this car expecting to see a celebrity. That was back when all three manufacturers offered truly different choices. I was a little boy when ths came out and remember these well 'cause of those headlights.

After a long week of hard work, taking it easy and seeing this video of this beautiful 1962 Imperial was such a pleasure. The Imperials from way back when were among those distinct makes and models from Detroit that one knew what they were on sight. And this couple really cherishes and enjoys this car. Many thanks and keep the videos of those Virgil Exner-designed Chrysler cars coming.

Hi, Lou! The 1962 Imperial was a refinement of the '61 models, still with the free-standing headlamps but with a split grille and without those bombastic fins. That ribbon speedometer must be pretty fun to watch, although if you want to see one that changes color as you pick up speed, you want to ride in a 1959-1962 Oldsmobile 88 or 98. Woodie and Sandy are very fortunate to have found a survivor like this right up their alley, and yeah, you could live in it. In fact, people tell me the exact same thing about my wagon! I do find it a bit curious, though, why Chrysler gave it a relatively narrow hood while they packed that big 413 underneath. Oh, well!
Anyway, it would be nice to be able to get to a Carlisle show someday. Meanwhile, thanks to the three of you for this nice quiet ride in the big dog!

The taillights were called sparrow strainers - a little more graphic. Used more in conjunction with the 57-59 models, but fitting enough here. The 'grab handle' on back of the front seat was a robe rail - but you've got the function. Too bad he wasn't showing the original interior; the LeBaron was quite understated - the standard cloth was very formal, and the LeBaron was a limited production top of line model, priced with the 60 Special vs. a deVille.

I can just feel the smoothness of that car. What a contrast are the '62 Cadillac and Imperial. It seems the lither looking Cadillac might've attracted more younger professionals, and the Imperial, and older crowd. I wonder if that's a fact?

I see why their youngest daughter asked to be driven in that Ride for her Wedding Day. That’s the best way to Cruise. Who needs a limo when you have a father that owns and drives a car like that. Lou Woody and Sandy are a very blessed couple to own a piece of Americana that you can’t get no better than that even though it doesn’t have air conditioning, but whoever bought that Ride should’ve added air conditioning to the car. That’s the only reason I love watching MeTV Memorable Entertainment Television, when I watch all the old classic television shows and series from Perry Mason to Barnaby Jones. Barnaby Jones was given a 1978 Ford LTD 2Dr Brougham Coupe with a Landau Moonroof Fully Equipped,Fully Loaded and Fully Powered with Highly Buffed, Polished aluminum and Chrome Factory Mag Wheels with 2” White Wall Tires and a Lincoln Presidential Series 4Dr Town Car that the Husband Drove and the Wife Drove a 1979 Continental MKV with a Powered Glass Moonroof and Factory Turbine Aluminum Mag Wheels with 2” White Wall Tires. Hey LOU! WHOOSH>>>WHOOSH>>>>>>go the floppy sneakers of Robin Yount, Jr. down that field in Carlisle, PA as you and your son run down the line and each of you guys catch a floppy sneaker of mine for the twin touchdown🏈🏈!!! This majestic and imposing Imperial knocked me right outta my sneakers and onto that field in my tubesocked stocking (and very hyper) JV baseball guy ⚾⚾feet, now completely unconscious lol 🤣😵🤪. What a treat to see this huge boat that was styled like a mid century modern American sculpture, big brother Lou. Whimsical and bizarre at times and always to make a statement, show wealth, and not look like anything else. Ya don't see these Imperials anymore, so just amazing. The wildly styled interior makes just as big an impression. I especially enjoyed your ride with Mom and Dad in the huge front seat as you listened to their tales and let them shine. @@loucostabile I really would like to have another Imperial. The build quality was the best I've ever seen from a 60's car. The Imperial was ahead of it's time. I also loved that I could lower it with the front torsion bars and the rear went up and down with compressed air. I was 23 years old when I had mine, so naturally mine was slightly lower than average, but not obnoxiously slammed.
      Right now I have a 1963 1/3 Ford Galaxie XL500 white 2 door 390 engine.

beautiful old antique Car always admired the Lebaron and at least the Sebring that replaced it for Coupe/Convertible paternal granddad had a Newport convertible when my dad and his sisters were little in the 1960s and my late maternal grandfather's widow had a 1997 Sebring LXI coupe in dark Amathyst purple over tan interior I always wanted the Sebring JXI Convertible in either Garnet Red Sapphire Blue Sterling Blue Glow or black over tan interior or a Toyota Camry Solara XLE V6 Convertible and after that was paid I'd have gone for a low mileage 2002 Cadillac Eldorado ESC Convertible or a 2006 Lincoln Town Car

Nice car - too bad the top of the line Lebaron did not have A/C. I have a 1962 Crown and it has A/C - also, the Crown has the Imperial lettering on the front fenders and Crown emblems on the quarter panels. Mine is all original and has 75,000 miles. Thanks for your video.

@@loucostabile Those gun sight head light 61-63 Imperials get a lot of thumbs up and I watch a lot of you videos - very interesting with a lot of great information! The 62 Imperials - you had to jack up each car wheel and manually adjust each wheel brake and 63 had self adjusting brakes. Also, the power is on all the time for power windows and my parents would say that is be a problem with kids playing with them and possibly getting hurt. Take care - Lou!

I've never seen an Imperial rust out due to the "Free Standing" headlamps? That seems like it's just sort of made up or invented....I've never heard of the lights being described as "floating" The free standing concept is a neo classic inspired design to emulate the vehicles pre 1940's. Exner used this trick also on the Stutz Blackhawk. The Taillights are known as "Bomb Sites". the "Bird Strainers" is more a derogatory name invented recently, clearly the owner of the car had never heard of that term before......New terminology developed on the web from hack journalists on curbside classics seem to creep their way into nomenclature, it's not historically accurate as a term.

Lou, If you can find a 1983 through 1988 Chrysler Fifth Avenue, would love to see a feature on it. Have had numerous upscale vehicles, including 83 and 85 Fifth Avenues which could hold their own with Fleetwoods and Town Cars for luxury and formal elegance .

In San Francisco, those would be called Pedestrian Catchers.
Are the mirror doorpanels there to remind male passengers that their flies might be accidently left unzipped?

If Chrysler had toned down the styling of Imperial would they have sold better ? But without the Exner flamboyance it just wouldn't be an Imperial. GM sold more Cadillac convertibles each year than did Chrysler's entire Imperial line.
