thank you for explanation, Dan. I broke this actuator plate in my Sturmey hub in Brompton bike)). I need to ride every day, so i had to eliminate 2 pairs of pawls except pawls of direct gear, so my bike became single-speed. After your video, i attached all in their places, and all gears work good without this actuator.
Thank you for pointing out this (important) nuance. A lot of other sources just hate on the actuator plate for being too fragile and therefore poorly designed, but this puts some of that into perspective.
While I don't currently own a bike with an internally geared hub, I find them ingenious. Thank you Dan, for your ongoing enthusiasm for these hubs and your clear explanations of their workings.
Great video, very helpful. What can you suggest for how to deactivate the coaster brake on an S-RC3 hub and convert it to an S-RF3 style without the coaster brake?
Hello Dan, I realize this is an older video, when I put my 5-speed hub back together do I need to grease or oil the gears at all. Thanks in advance for a reply.
They do need to be lubed, but I caution against using a grease with too much viscosity. Sturmey Archer specifies Castrol CLS00 semi fluid grease.I have used Shimano Nexus gearhub grease successfully, and I have an older 5 speed Sturmey Archer that I run on ATF with regular grease in the bearings. It's been running great on that for years.
@@2wagondragon What would be the difference between using ATF and using special Sturmey Archer gear hub oil from the old days? I'm considering converting my AB5 to oil lubrication, intending to just squirt in the oil through the hollow axle (with the indicator spindle removed) once every two or three months. As you already have one running on ATF: how do you replenish it and how often, and does it make a noticeable difference in drag?
@@lennartgoosens The hub I'm running on ATF is a XRF5 ball lock type. I dunked the internals in ATF several years ago, and have not removed them from the hub shell since then. About twice a year, I dribble a little bit of ATF into the hub through the indicator hole. It has been shifting and functioning flawlessly . On some older 3 speed hubs, I have lubed them using a light viscosity base oil with no additives. Sturmey Archer's prescribed lube for modern hubs is Castrol CLS 00 semi fluid grease, but the local Castrol distributor does not sell small quantities and I would have to buy an 18 liter pail at a cost of about $600 Canadian. I talked to David at Sunrace USA and he tells me Shimano Nexus grease can be substituted. I had already used that in another hub I overhauled in the past.
Without the actuator plate, back peddling in third gear on a 3 speed hub sucks (not a coaster brake model). As the clutch is being pushed over the pins for the planetary gears. It does not lock up. But it just sucks, and sounds like shit.

Glad it helped. The only application where it is absolutely necessary is with a coaster brake hub.

Thank you for the comment.

Is that axle sheered off bij over-tightening?
Thanks for the video
do you have any video to remove the plate actuator and or re attached it gain ?
Hello Dan! Great video. Is it possible to deactivate the coaster brake for a 5 speed Sturmey Archer S5C (II) IGH ? Thanks!
Yes you can. All you need to do is remove the rear facing pawls from the driver.

If you remove the rear facing pawls from the driver, the coaster brake will be deactivated.
